He was also highly intelligent and had a successful life post-playing career. He served as player-manager for several seasons, and he formed his own independent club for a time. Having attended both Dillard University and Xavier University, he later opened his own real estate agency and was also a published poet.

Malarcher become one of my favorite players from the Negro Leagues when I learned more about him after Replay Baseball put out their 1923 Negro Leagues card set some years back.
I'll keep the thread updated with info on 'the gent'.

Great article about Malarcher, in case anyone is interested:
https://www.theadvocate.com/new_orle...39951181d.html

I think part of the appeal of Malarcher to me is that he reminds me a lot of my grandfather in personality and even a bit in looks (in spite of the fact that my grandfather was a white man of German ancestry.)

June 13

The Babe has a big day in the Big Apple but the Tigers find a way to escape with a W. Fred Sumption unleashed a fastball that Frank Baker sent to LF that was caught for the final out, give one of the twins his first MLB save. The Tigers have won 2/3 and will square off for the final game of the series June 14.

June 13 Negro League

On that same day Oscar Charleston went 5 for 5 to help the St. Louis Giants defeat the New York Bacharach Giants, 2-1.

Oscar sees his B.A. climb to .426.

Give Le Morne Rouge some credit. After spending considerable time at the bottom of the standings they are beginning to showcase some of their young talent. At this point, they appear to be the only legit challenger to the Diamonds in the Martinique League. They are getting a lot of mileage out of the their number one and two SP's, as together they have an 8-2 record.
Hey, wait, did Julien Henri switch universes?

Stamina

No pitch counts in this day/age. The top 3 performances, as selected by our distinguished panel, are all SP's.

June 15, Giants at Cubs

I sat back and observed this battle for first place that took place in the friendly confines. Where else do you see match ups like Doc Kramer against High Pockets Kelly. Ah, those were the days.

This one went extra innings before the Giants put up a 3 spot to take the win. Ross 'Pep' Youngs had a big throwing assist from right field that nullified a go ahead run for the Cubs.

June 16 Tigers at Red Sox

Today I traveled to Fenway Park to take in the Tigers and Red Sox. Boston has been a bit shaky to date, but they are always tough at Fenway.

Another exciting extra inning game that saw the visitors win a close one. Several balls banged off the green monster, but, it was Heilman's belt to left in the 11th that cleared the monster. Tigers win by 3.

Rob Sumption has a batting average north of .300. Fred pitched the botton of the 11th to net a save.

Tigers and Red Sox, and Rajah

After winning the first two in Fenway, the Tigers dropped the final 3 games of the 5 game set giving Boston the series edge, 3-2.

Rogers Hornsby continues to rake National League pitching as he upped his hitting streak to remarkable 38 straight.

I'll be following the Cards LIVE each game until the streak ends.

In the Negro League Doc Dudley has the longest streak to date, 40 games. Bill Force of the Detroit Stars broke the streak as Doc failed to get a hit in 3 AB's (5 Plate Appearances).

Indians power past the Tigers in Game #66

Cleveland overcame a deficit with plenty of hits (17) to go with Tris Speakers 7th homer of the year. Jamieson and Wambsgass each had 3 hits apiece in the #1 and #2 spots putting pressure on the Tiger pitching all day long.

Rob Sumption went 0 for 4 but stole his first base. Fred Sumption pitched in relief and had his first hit of the year (1 for 5).

Game #67 and what a 9th inning!

Something happened to Urban Shocker on his way to a CG 7-2 win in Detroit because he came up 1 out short. The Detroit Tigers put on a furious rally in the bottom of the 9th at Navin Field much to the delight of however remained in the seats.

Shocker got saddled with his 6th loss of the season (9-6) while Bill Whitaker earned his first win (0.00 ERA) with 2 innings of 1 hit shutout ball.

The killer was the 2 out error in the 9th by the catcher. It set the stage for a walk off 3 run bomb off the bat of Sammy Hale.

As a footnote to the action, give young Rob Sumption credit for his only hit of the day, a double to keep the late rally alive.
