34 Team Schedule - 1 Subleague
Was hoping someone can help me and create a 34 team league schedule using the 1 sub-league 4 division theory mentioned in the below article.
Divisions would have to be 8-8-9-9 https://www.baseballamerica.com/colu...er-postseason/ Last edited by Javs; 12-03-2017 at 10:28 PM. |

Obviously, MLB itself would never go for such a structure (if they expand at all, the AL/NL will remain intact), but let's take a look at what a 34-team, one-subleague setup would look like.
I'll assume 162 games/52 half-week series for this, to avoid calendar concerns. As noted below, this necessitates some creativity in squeeze weeks, unlike Kirby Paquette's proposal which had no four-game series. Teams in the 8-team divisions play: - Four series (totaling 12 games) against each of 7 divisional opponents (84G, 42H/42A; 28S, 14H/14A) - A 3-game series against each of 26 nondivisional opponents (78G, 39H/39A; 26S, 13H/13A) Teams in the 9-team divisions play: - Three or four series (totaling 10-12 games) against each of 8 divisional opponents (86G, 43H/43A, or 87G, 42H/45A or 45H/42A; 29S, 14-15H/14-15A) - A 3-game series against each of 25 nondivisional opponents, with one pair of teams instead playing a 4-game home-and-home series (75G, 36H/39A or 39H/36A, or 76G, 38H/38A; 25S, 13-14H/13-14A) Series layout: - With each team playing 54 series in 52 half-weeks, two squeeze weeks are required. - In the 8-team divisions, the two squeeze weeks can be scheduled normally. - In the 9-team divisions, to account for the extra team, there will be three weeks in which squeezing takes place, each with six teams per division squeezing and the other three playing cross-division. |

According to the article Javs is referring to, the schedule is 156 games. They are all 3-game series, 52 of them (26 away 26 at home), spreading on 26 1/2 week (because of the allstar break). So here, no necessity of squeezing 4-game series
Teams in the 8-team divisions play: - 26 inter-division 3-game series (3// or //3) - 26 intra division 3-game series against 7 teams, meaning 3-3//3-3 against 5 teams and 3-3//3 and 3//3-3 against the remaining 2. Teams in the 9-team divisions play: - 25 inter-division 3-game series (3// or //3) - 27 intra division 3-game series against 8 teams, meaning 3-3//3-3 against 3 teams and 3-3//3 and 3//3-3 against the remaining 5. The problem I see here is for 1 team in each of the 9-team divisions. For these 2 teams, they would play 3-3//3 against 2 teams and 3//3-3 for 2 other teams. For the 5th team I could not fit that extra 3-3//3 or 3//3-3. It ended up these 2 teams don't meet at all. These 2 teams would play 24 inter-division 3-game series (3// or //3) and 28 intra division 3-game series against 8 teams, meaning 3-3//3-3 against 4 teams and 3-3//3 and 3//3-3 against the remaining 4. I wonder if I am right and If I can lay out all the matchups. I will spend sometime over the weekend to see what I can do. |

Here is the Schedule. It is as described in the thread above.
To add variety in the matchups, I have made 20 of them. I have made 10 randomized Schedules and 10 mirror images of them. Then, I randomized number 1 to 20... |
