RRS was the key reliever for Sydney in big games, his high leverage batting average against was below .100 . Think the AI left him unprotected because of his contract. Wollongong and Gold Coast are making moves as you will see in my offseason update tomorrow. Also potentially more expansion in Victoria and New South Wales on the horizon (well announcements at least)

Preseason Predictions - 2018

Preseason Predicitions

Perth
October 25th, 2018

ABL To Start Eighth Season

This week the Australian Baseball League will start its eighth season. This year should be a stellar year for the original six. With two new expansion teams into the fold, Gold Coast and Wollongong, we can expect to see the tradition powers return to the top. Canberra, Perth, and Adelaide are all expected to succeed, while Melbourne and Sydney will fight for a preliminary playoff spot.

Melbourne strengthened its chances yesterday by acquiring Stephan Kent and #54 Prospect 1B Jared Cruz by sending LF Moko Moanaroa and cash to Gold Coast.

Two time MVP and former Perth Heat 1B will try to lead Wollongong to immediate success. Stefan Welch will try to lead Adelaide to a fourth straight playoff appearance and Stefan Anslow and Trent Oletjen will try to get Canberra to their first Claxton Shield.

Below are computer projects.

Nice to see the Heat projected to be in a playoff spot. I can't believe they let Huber go, however.

He demanded 80k, Melbourne and Wollongong were in the running for him. Perth had a budget of 75k left. This does let them get time for former 1st round pick Colenutt though.

He has massive power potential. I was just happy Huber stayed in the ABL. I'd hate for the league to lose stars.

Pennant Chase... Dec 5

OOC: Just to give everyone an insight. Looks like we are going to have a very close final month of play.

Melbourne made an interesting move purchasing the contract of 2 time MVP Justin Huber. That cost them 250k plus the remaining cost proraterd over a month of his 82k per year contract. Huber could make them a playoff threat. Wollongong will pocket the money and hopefully use the balance in the free agent market.

Standings, Dec 28

Perth made a massive late run.

This is the last day of the season where Melbourne had a rained out game (along with a few other teams) to make up to force a one game playoff vs Perth for a playoff spot (Adelaide owns the tiebreakers).

Perth defeated Melbourne for the final playoff spot.

2018 Preliminary Series

Preliminary Series, 2018 Season

vs

Preview: Perth defeated Melbourne in a tiebreaker game to host Adelaide. Perth was lead by phenom Rhett Colenutt whose two HRs lead them to a 3-1 victory. Perth and Adelaide are both lead by stable and hot offenses and will require their pitching to step up in order to win this series. Due to a stadia conflict in Norwood Oval, Perth will host the series.

Game 1 - Perth, Western Australia

Rhett Colenutt lead off the home half of the first with a two run home run. Colenutt's fourth of the postseason in two games. In the top of the fourth Adelaide answered with two runs, but Colenutt, not to be outdone lead off the fourth for Perth with a solo shot. After that it was all Perth as they tacked on a total of 5 more runs to win 8-2.

Perth 8, Adelaide 2

Game 2 - Perth, Western Australia

Perth looked to sweep at home and sweep they did. Perth manufactured run after run as they scored four in the bottom of the third and continued to add two more in the bottom of the fourth. Adelaide's response never came expect for two solo HRs by Brice and Wicks and a manufactured run in the top of the ninth. Perth advances with the sweep.

Perth 7, Adelaide 3.

vs

Preview: Perth defeated Adelaide two games to none in the Preliminary Series. Canberra has been lead by OF Stefan Anslow, however, Anslow will be unavailable for the series as he is still on the DL with a shoulder injury.

Game 1 - Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

Solid game from both pitchers. The only runs of the game scored when Rhett Colenutt started off the top of the fourth with a single then Ryan Stovall singled as well. A Jake Hodgson ground out scored Colenutt and Gareth Neilson's single scored Stovall. 2-0 Perth. That was it for the scoring as Sam Gibbons pitched 7 innings of shutout baseabll and Eric Marzec compelted the game. Gibbons had 10ks. James Parr (CANB) went the full 9 but gave up 9 hits which turned into 2 runs. Parr struck out 15.

Perth 2, Canberra 0

Game 2 - Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

Canberra's Luke Wilkins started game 2 and Perth's Todd Van Steensel was his opposition. Canberra jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 3rd. The game was never truly close expect for another Colenutt HR. Final 5-2.

Canberra 5, Perth 2

Game 3 - Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

Canberra would start James Parr for game 3 on short rest. Canberra would score in the second on a Russell Hewat single that scored OF Trent Oeltjen. Canberra's former ROY Nathan Roneberg would hit a 401ft 2 RunHR off Scott Mitchinson in the bottom of the fifth. 3-0. Zach Penprase would force himself home on a misplayed ball in the bottom of the sixth as Justin Trapp hit a liner to LF. Canberra would never look back, finishing the game with 3 more runs in the bottom 8. Perth's bats would never get going against James Parr's 12Ks as he only surrendered 7 baserunners the whole game.

Canberra 7, Perth 1.

Zach Penprase was the MVP of the series.

Canberra lost two games to one against EDA Rhinos.

EDA went on to win against Hokkaido 4 games to 3.

2020 Expansion

ABL to Add Two More Licenses in 2020

Today ABL commisioner Ryan Carrick-Flowers announced his plan to expand the league by two more teams in the 2020 season. Flowers said that meetings had already began with prospective teams. Flowers commented that "Various major population centers have made bids. After 2020 we will explore intercity matchups. Bids will be ramped up then in the major cities that have developed a baseball culture. This likely will include East Sydney, East Melbourne, South Melbourne, South Sydney, Port/North Adelaide, and Fremantle. Till then we will focus on new markets to spread the baseball culture and to increase the potential audience for a new TV deal."

It is expected that Geelong, Newcastle, Auckland (NZL), Sunshine Coast, and Townsville have all submitted bids for this round of expansion.
