How many leagues/subleagues? Lower detail of games? (I may be getting my Football Manager/OOTP confused on that last one).

The main driver behind this is the size of the league. It's never going to be snappy simming a real MLB world because there are hundreds and hundreds of teams and thousands of players.
I've heard from people in the past that if your antivirus has a way to exclude the OOTP folder, that can really help, because OOTP generates a LOT of text and html files, and if your antivirus is actively scanning each one as it gets created, that can really slow things down.

The easiest way to get the game to run faster is to delete some of the extraneous leagues.

Stat detail
I typically turn stat detail to a lower setting, from "very high detail" to "normal" or whatever the middle setting is. I've never missed whatever "detail" this truncates, and I think it helps the engine run smoothly.
