The Grand Experiment

The Mississippi River Rats of the New World Baseball League have been mired in last for a number of seasons. With some young talent in the minors they have decided to experiment and bring some of those youngsters up even though they may not quite be ready. As the 1992 season begins, we will keep updating.

Dram Buie http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p1999.html

Dram was the 2nd overall pick by the Rats in 1989 and actually made his major league debut just past halfway of the 1991 season. Dram struggled (.222 5 HR in 70 G) but showed remarkable improvement in his ability to hit and hit with power towards season end. Dram also brings good defense and a godd arm to RF and the Rats expect 1992 to be a breakout year for him.
Before his call up Dram was the #13 overall prospect.

Ron Rico http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p511.html

Ron is the Rats #2 prospect and #31 in the League. A decent 2B who can also fill in some at SS Ron is expected to combine with Dram for a vicious power punch for the Rats. Ron got a late season callup in 1991 but through managerial dumbness only got in 9G getting 18 AB. However, he showed his potential in that limited time hitting 1 HR and a 3B while batting .389. Ron was drafted in 2nd round in 1989 the 26th overall pick.

Miller "Genuine" Draft http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p1424.html

Another future slugger for the Rats, MGD is a slow footed 1B that should make up for it with his bat. MGD was iniitally a 1st round pick by New England as the 3rd overall pick in 1991. He came to the Rats in a draft day trade. MGD showed rapidly what he should be able to do, playing only 11 G in A ball (.349 2 HR) before jumping to AA getting in 105 (.287 27 HR) despite missing 4 weeks with a torn groin. It remains to be seen how he can make the jump to the big show directly from AA.

Rusty Nail http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p355.html

A left handed pitcher who can start and relieve, the Rats haven't decided yet what role he will fill. If he can improve vs. RH then he could become a solid SP, if not a stellar LH relief specialist. Rusty has shown spectacular improvement in his abilities as he was 3rd round 68th overall pick by Quebec in 1989, coming to Mississippi on a draft day trade. Rusty's minor league stats have not been the greatest his best being this past year in AA (4-6 3.76) but showed his stuff in late season callup getting in 6 games and starting 3 while going 2-0 with a save while having a 1.48 ERA and getting 26K in 24.1 IP.

Ernest Gallo http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p1020.html

A 2nd round pick, 39th overall in 1987 by Hell's, ernest joined the Rates in July of that year. He has been hampered soemwhat by only having 2 pitches a fastball and slider and though has started his entire minor league career may very well be better suited as a reliever as in all his minor league starts has yet to record a complete game. He spent all of 1991 in AAA going 14-4 (2.94) in 25 starts striking out 120 while walking 60. This will be the year that determines what role in the future Ernest will play with the Rats.

AND the GRAND EXPERIMENT:

Hooters Galore http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p876.html

Much was expected of Hooters when she was picked up by the Rats from Fremont in a 1988 draft day trade as the 15th overall pick. Expected to crush the ball, she has never developed (at least skills wise) and has been a "bust" in the minors and now at age 25 is being given one last shot. She has never made it past A ball hitting 38 HR over last 2 years but average in low .220. She appears to not care about the game, having been heard numerous times that its not challenging. Well, she should be plenty cahllenged this year in the bigs. The Rats will probably give her until the All Star break to prove whther she has any career.

Should we be concerned that Hooters suffers from Clutch performance?

Well, the seaon has begun on the Grand experiement, so heres an update on how it is going.
The Rats are 6-13 overall with a decent 6-4 home record but 0-9 on the road.

Miller "Genuine" Draft 1B Millers started 11 of the 19 games so far and seems to have nailed down the starting job, hitting a decent .255 but hasn't found his power stroke yet with 2 HR's in 50 PA.s Miller appears to be over swinging a little with 9 K's in those 50 PA. The Rats still expect big things from this 24 yr old.
http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p1424.html

Ron Rico 2B Ron has started all 19 games but is struggelling mightily, hittiing only .159 while K'ing 15 times in 77 PA and collecting only 3 EBH. The team will continue to monitor the 25 yr old at least thru May but unless they see some drastic improvement it may be back to AAA for Ron. http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p511.html

Hooters Galore OF This 25 yr old "disappointment" has seen only limited action in 4 games getting only 8 AB. Hooters got in manager Mark Allens doghouse after dogging it in spring training. IT remains to be seen if this former "phenom" has a future in baseball. http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p511.html

Dram Buie OF Dram has had a good start leading the team with 5 HR in 19 starts with an OPS of .898. IF theres one weakness that Dram needs to work on its his running game getting thrown out easily in his 2 attempts. http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p1999.html

The other 2 members who were going to part of the experient did not have "outstanding" spring training results so are starting year in AAA though with the Rats pitching woes may very well be up in the show before the All Star break.

Ernest Gallo is having a decent yr in AAA, appearing in 7 G all in relief, a new role for him, he's appeared in 7 G, 13 IP and has an ERA of 3.56. Expect to see him get some AAA starts in next month and maybe some in the bigs by the end of the year. http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p1020.html

Rusty Nail has not had a good start this year appearing in 6 games but only 4.1 IP and an ERA over 8.00 Its still early for waht will probably be a LH relief specialist in the bigs if he ever makes it. http://www.nwbl.homeip.net/Baseball/NW/p355.html

Another player who has progressed nicely and could see some big league action is SP Irish Whiskey who was a first rd pick, 4 th overall by Maui in 1990. Irish is 2-1 in 3 starts with ERA of 3.22 in AAA while every 1 K an inning. Whiskey never got a chance to pitch much in the Maui or Dayton systems when he was with them so the Rats are anxious to seee what he can do with the right amount of work.

Well week 2 of the experiment is over and it ain't lookin good.

Miller Draft hit .250 for the week with 2 HR, While Ron Rico managed a paltry .120. Hooters got in 4 games with 8 AB and only 1 hit.

Dram picked up 2 more HR while hitting .250.

One month down in Grand Experiment

Miller "Genuine" Draft .189 2HR and only 6 RBI and he's been dropped to #8 in the order. The Rats are seeing no noticeable improvement in Miller and their patience may be wearing thin.

Ron Rico .174 1 HR 5 RBI and he is also on the bubble.

Hooters Galore .121/1/3. She needs to pick it up as she is still showing no interest in the game (just the showers afterwards). She has been told May is her last shot and if there is no improvement she will be sent packing.

and the Good news is Dram Buie who is .286/6/14 with .870OPS and slugging .533. He's also only made 1 Error in 70 chances in the OF and has 2 assists

Ernest Gallo (AAA) 10 relief appearances 1-2 3.44 ERA
Rusty Nail (AAA) not faring as well in 10 relief stints 0-1 with 1 save and 9.95 ERA and really struggling vs RH. Looking more and more like he will just be a LH relief specialist.

Irish Whiskey (AAA) continues to impress the Rats and may be the next experiement. In 4 starts he is 3-1 with ERA 2.31 and has 32 K's in 31.1 innings.

6 weeks into the season and some things lookin good, some not

1B Miller "Genuine" Draft .198/4 HR/12 RBI in 29 Games. He has been moved to the #8 spot in order to try and relieve some of the pressure. Made some minor progress so far in May hitting .216 but already K'd 12 times in only 37 AB!!!!

3B Ron Rico is having what could be a breakout month hitting .378 for May so far but power still ot there with only 1 HR. Moving him to #7 spot in order may have helped.

OF Hooters Galore seems to have responded to managements threat to cut her if performance did not pick up. Shes got 3 HR in May in only 30 AB while average is .267 for the month. Overall though she's still got a ways to go at .190

OF Dram Buie is still doing the best of anyone in the Experiement. He's now at .283 with 8 HR for the year in 37 games. He's now holding down the #3 spot in the order with some cleanup appearances also.

IN AAA Ernest Gallo is 3-2 with an ERA of 3.6 in 30 IP. He has made 1 start the rest in relief.

Also in AAA Rusty Nail is struggling with an ERA over 12 in 12 Games and may be sent down to AA soon.

Surprise prospect Irish Whiskey continues to impress going 4-1 in 6 starts in AAA with an ERA of 2.14. He may be the first to see time in the bigs.
