Battle of the Ages: All-Decade Teams
Hoping to get back into dynasty writing, and trying to figure out what kind I want to do (besides possibly trying to rekindle my old Austin James dynasty!).
Anyone who ever read my Alltime Baseball Alliance and Pastime Baseball League dynasties knows I am a huge fan of cross-era matchups. I love history, but I don't like historical replays...I know what DID happen. I'm far more interested in the what ifs. Which brings me to the Battle of the Ages, which will be setup as follows: 24 teams: NL and AL teams from the 1900s, 1910s, 1920s, etc. through the 2010s. 50 players: Rosters will be uniform. 3 catchers, 3 at each infield position, 9 outfielders, 15 starting pitchers and 10 relievers. They are evaluated based on WAR during the decade and fit into the position they played more than 50% of their games at. Same for pitchers. I wanted teams to include relievers, like real teams, rather than be loaded with 10-12 starters. That's not a team to me. It also gets some sleepers into the set. The only exception is the 1900-1909 teams, where the relief threshold had to be cut to 25%. That all makes 49 players. The highest WAR player of the decade, regardless of position, who did not fit into one of those positions, gets spot number 50. Active roster will be 25, reserve squad will be another 25. Level playing field: All players will be rated using Davenport Translations, which adjust for era. They will start with the age they were when they first made the majors, but their rookie ratings will be based on the best of their first three seasons. Their potential will be the average of their best 3 seasons. Real splits: All ratings will have proper, real-life split adjustments for both pitchers and hitters. GB% will also be factored for pitchers where available (post 1950, I believe). Assignments: Players are assigned to a decade based on which decade their WAR was highest. So, while Ted Williams was a top 9 outfielder for both the 1940s and 1950s AL teams, the AL 1940s team gets him because his WAR was higher during that decade. Similarly, players who perhaps had a higher WAR or played more years in one decade but didn't crack the top slots to qualify for that decade based on the competition may make it into another decade's team. Jerry Reuss, for example, doesn't make the 1970s NL team despite pitching every year of the decade because he ranks too low on the depth chart. But he slips into the 1980s team with a similar WAR. Players also can end up in a league you wouldn't expect by virtue of playing time. For example, Fred McGriff's best years were with the Blue Jays. But he started in '86 and doesn't crack the 80s 1B lineup, and in the 90s did most of his damage in the NL for the Braves and Padres. So he's on the NL 90s squad. League Setup: Each league will consist of two divisions of six teams each. No wild cards. Two division champs play to advance to World Series from their league. I'll go through rosters here in this thread as I do them, and if you have any questions let me know. Love talking about the players, eras, etc. GH

The 1960s AL roster - Harmon Killebrew is a great 50th man to have, as he's the unusual star player who didn't play 50% of his games at any one position. So he makes it on his overall WAR for the decade.

NL 1970s
NOTE: Pete Rose has been removed from the 1960s NL team as his WAR was higher in the 70s.He's an OF for the 70s squad. Jim Lefebvre takes his place at 2B on the 1960s team.
