Topps Giants - 1964

These Oversized cards came out in August 1964 and they quickly became popular with collectors and they soon were referred to by collectors as Topps Giants. That's not what Topps was referring to them as, but the fans actually came up with a better and catchier name for the set. Some of the information on the back of the cards was right up to the minute:ie; The back of Phillie, Johnny Callison's card refers to him as the hero of the 1964 all-star game. (Callison hit a 3-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning at the NY Mets' new home, Shea Stadium to give the National League the victory. This game was played only about four weeks before these cards hit the shelves of neighborhood candy stores. That was some Fast Work by the folks at Topps.
Topps is now celebrating the 55th anniversary of the '64 Giants set's release.

Bobby Abreu is the latest player to join the Phillies Wall Of Fame

March 20, 2019: Bobby Abreu has been selected to be the 2019 addition
to The Phillies Wall Of Fame. (only one player, manager, executive or
broadcaster has been chosen each year since the honor was inaugurated in 1978).

2019 Debuts?

After the end of the 2018 season, I notified our moderator that I would not be posting MLB debuters in future years. It had been my intent to only play that role for an interim period during the 2017 season, but it carried on throughout 2018. Our moderator indicated that he would find a replacement and that he would establish a 2019 Debuts link for members to use.

Now the 2019 MLB season has begun with the game between the Mariners and the Athletics in Japan yesterday. A shortstop for the Mariners named Dylan Moore made his debut. I have heard nothing more about how the tracking of debuters will occur on the OOTP photo threads. Anyone have anything to offer on this subject?

I can do it for now at least.

Look for the spinoff thread "2017 Debuts" from the mother thread 'Gambo and T Wil' of ootp. This now houses the Debuts of three consecutive years 2017, 2018 and it now includes the four debuts from the 2019 Seattle vs. Oakland Japan Series (one on March 20 and three on March 21). It looks like the entire year of 2019 Debuts will run consecutively after 2017 and 2018 Debuts afl on this one thread. It is kind of convenient. 2017 through 2019 Debuts are now all in one location. You can look back and find any debut from the last three years all in the same location.
In other words, it's sort of like "killing three birds with one stone".

Jamie Nelson 1983

Does anyone have the Topps Vault images of Nelson as a Mariner? He is conspicuously missing from my collection for some reason.

Randy Elliott - At Last!

New to the TV are not one but two shots of Randy Elliott with the A's, taken in Yankee stadium in 1980. The only other image of Elliott during his stop with Oakland is, apparently, the McWilliams image at the HOF.

Nice way to start the day.

Tony Barron 1996

Tony Barron made one appearance for the 1996 Expos, pinch-hitting for Pedro Martinez in this game. The scan is from a recently purchased lot of 35mm negatives.

Whew!

Thank God for today's post...I was beginning to worry that my Randy Elliott post from March 26 - 10 days ago - broke the forum!

I don't think I've ever seen this go so long without some sort of post or other.

Tony Barron also played 57 games for the 1997 Philadelphia Phillies and he wasn't all bad, hitting .286, with 4 home runs and 24 RBI in 189 at bats, but 1996 & 1997 were his only MLB seasons.. The Phillies finished at the bottom of the NL East in '97, Barron's year with the Phillies, and they had a rookie manager that you may have heard of.....Terry Francona.

There's been a distinct lack of interesting photos on auction sites lately. I'm certain things will pick up soon!

1975 Rangers

Looking for something of Jim Gideon, Bob Jones (in his first go-around with the club) and Ed Brinkman. The photo posted here - http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ostcount=20860 - doesn't appear to be genuine as the uniform doesn't match what Texas was wearing during his week-or-so-long tenure with the club.

Thanks!

The Brinkman image you've linked to is photoshopped from a pic of him with the Tigers. Here's one crummy Bob Jones scan with him in an early Texas uniform... both of these images were glommed off ebay many years ago.
