Playing players "out of position"?

I've been trying to figure this out through trial-and-error but figure it might be easier to just ask here...

I have player who has the same defensive rating (70) at both 1B and LF.

When his position is 1B, his overall rating is 64/80 and potential rating is 70/80; when I change his position to LF, his overall rating is 55/80 and potential rating is 63/80.

Given the makeup of the rest of my team, I'd like to play him in LF - would it be better (i.e., will he be a better player) if I change his position to LF, even with the lower ratings, or should I play him "out of position" and keep him as a first baseman?

His overall rating is relative to others at his position. His personal ratings don't change. It's just that there are more good left fielders in your league, so he doesn't grade as high compared to them as he does the first basemen in your league.

I didn't know the ratings were relative - thanks! So it doesn't matter if I have him listed as a 1B or a LF, right? In that case, is the "change position" option just for our benefit, so we can keep track of our rosters?

Yes, it won't matter if he is not playing at his primary listed position. His offensive production will be based on his offensive ratings. His fielding rating at the position he plays will depend upon his rating at that position. The overall rating (stars) is just there for help in scouting and comparison to other players.

What he's listed at will matter for trade offers you receive though. I'll go into offseasons with a stacked team and keep getting offers for just horrible players at some position wanting good players of mine. Confused me forever till I realized the AI is trying to rip me off because it's seeing a glaring hole on my roster at a position because the guy I have playing there is listed at another position. So it just sees, "He doesn't have anything at 2B, maybe he's desperate!" But I've got two 5 star SS, one of whom is playing 2B for me. Then I'll switch them just to stop the offers.
