Portland Beavers (30-22 .577 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Diego Padres (31-23 .574 0 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

POR: Lonny Tomski (28-R 1-2 3.57) vs. SD: Mike Nackley (27-L 5-5 3.06) Cy Young

We are 2-0 against Nackley this year. In 4 of his 5 losses, the Padres scored 2 or fewer runs. The lone exception was his last start, when he got roughed up in Denver. But anyone can get roughed up in Denver.

Tomski allowed only 1 run in 7 innings in his last start. These two pitchers matched up on April 17 and we won in extras innings and neither starting pitcher pitched worth a darn. What are the odds that 1) Tomski has 2 good outings in a row and 2) that we can win a game with him starting against Mike Nackley twice in a row?

I do like the accurate accounting of even bitter defeats, though.

Thursday, June 6, Year II

We signed our 1st round pick, C Jeff Cozart (21-R), today for a bonus of $60,000. He will start his professional career at Salem of the Northwest League (D).

We also got a trade offer from the New York Giants, who want Lonny Tomski (28-R). They only offered us a 34 year old relief pitcher, so we declined.

We are in Seattle to play a 4 game series through the weekend. Seattle just swept the Angels in 3 games here and have won 5 in a row. This is our first meeting of the season. Last year, we won the season series, 11-7. They are 6th in the PCL in scoring with 4.09 runs per game (Portland is 9th with 3.55). They lead the PCL in HR with 62 in 57 games. Of course, their home park, the Kingdome, greatly facilitates home runs. They have hit 41 at home and 21 on the road. They are dead last in fewest runs allowed with 4.82 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.05).

Portland Beavers (34-22 .607 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (22-35 .386 12.5 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Frank Martin (27-R 6-2 3.00) vs. SEA: Ken Morrison (28-R 1-1 9.64)

Morrison was 1-0 in 3 starts against us last year, though we won both of his no decisions. He was 5-6 with a 4.26 ERA last year in 14 starts. He is pitching on short rest.

Martin gave up 10 hits and 4 ins in 6 innings in his last start, a no decision. He has not lost a game since April.

Dave Lesley grounds a double play ball to short, but Monte Rodgers, fresh off the bench, makes a bad throw to 2nd for an error! Jeff Schottler flies out to left and Saunderson tags up and beats the throw to 3rd. Is Schottler ever going to start hitting? We already sent him to AAA and he knocked the cover off the ball down there, but since coming back, he is 5 for 32 (.156), worse than he was before we sent him down... He is 0 for his last 16. Dennis Webb lines out to center and Saunderson scores. 4 to 3, Seattle. PH Barry Tucker (29-L) dumps a hit into right and Lesley goes to 3rd without a throw. Paul Bouvet up and Tucker steals 2nd. I thought they'd walk Bouvet then, but they don't and he flies out to left...

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Darryl Haynes (34-L). 3.38 ERA. Their closer is out for a dew days with a sore elbow. Top of our order is up. Paul Bouvet takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. PH Rollie Ferree (28-R) bunts Bouvet to 2nd. I wish I could know that a bunt was for certain. I just wasted my best hitter left on the bench... PH Eddie Thomas (26-R) strikes out.... Jeff Austin grounds out to first, unassisted....

Lost - 4 to 3

We had 6 hits and made no errors
Seattle had 10 hits and made 1 error

Frank Martin (L 6-3) went 3 innings, allowed 4 runs, 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 1.
RHP Jorge Reyna went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 2.
RHP Barry Chapman went 2 perfect innings and struck out 3.
LHP Mitch Dowdell went 1 scoreless inning and allowed 1 hit. He balked.

Ken Morrison (W 2-1) went 5 innings, gave us 2 runs, 4 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks and struck out 3. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.
LHP Darryl Haynes (SV 3) pitched a scoreless 9th, gave us 1 walk and struck out 1.

2B Paul Bouvet hit his first home run as a Beaver, drew 2 walks and stole a base. RF Gordon Saunderson had a hit and 2 walks and scored a run. C Dennis Webb had a hit and a walk and 2 RBI. PH Barry Tucker had a hit and stole a base.

For Seattle, CF Randy Hobson had 3 hits with a double and stole 2 bases.

P Bob Grigg (24-R) was activated from the Disabled List and Lonny Tomski (28-R) was sent back to Vancouver (AAA). I am sure that we have not seen the last of Lonny, though.

We signed our 2nd round pick, SP Brice Wright (18-R), today for a bonus of $37,000. He will start his professional career at Helena of the Pioneer League (R).

Vargas has had 6 Quality Starts in 6 tries as a Major Leaguer. He has not allowed a home run in 40 IP. We have never faced him.

Grigg has not pitched since May 10. He will be forgiven for being rusty today.

Omar Flores swings at a 1-2 pitch and lines one deep to left....and over the fence!! Home run!! 3 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Austin flares a 3-2 pitch into right for a hit. Tony Casarez up. A wild pitch sends Austin to 2nd. Casarez grounds out hard to 1st, unassisted, and Austin moves to 3rd. Dave Lesley pops out to 2nd. 2 outs. Barry Tucker beats out an infield hit and Austin scores! 4 to 0, Beavers! Dennis Webb lines out to 1st.

Bottom of the First:

Bob Dillon squibs one in front of the plate and C Dennis Webb throws him out. Jim Perkins grounds out to 2nd. Mark Fenik grounds out to 3rd! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Jim Perkins gets their first hit of the game, a double to center, but nothing comes of it.

Top of the Fifth:

Tony Casarez leads off by taking a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Dave Lesley bunts him to 2nd.... With a 4 run lead?? Barry Tucker singles to right, but hits it too hard for Casarez to score from 2nd.. Dennis Webb up and P Javier Vargas tries to pick Tucker off at 1st, but throws the ball away for an error and Casarez scores. 5 to 0, Beavers! With 2 outs, P Bob Grigg grounds one to short, but Paul Blaine throws the ball away at 1st for a 2 base error and Tucker scores! 6 to 0, Beavers! Blaine would never be my shortstop, no matter how many home runs he hits... Paul Bouvet swings at a 3-2 pitch and homers to left! 8 to 0, Beavers! That sends Vargas to the showers and ends our fun.

Won - 10 to 1

The first time we have reached double figures this season!

We signed our 4th round pick, SP Lee Harmon (21-R), today for a bonus of $18,000. He will start his professional career at Salem of the Northwest League (D).

Portland Beavers (35-23 .603 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (23-36 .390 12.5 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Don Panighetti (25-L 2-2 2.61) All-Star vs. SEA: Dennis Simoneaux (28-R 5-7 4.48)

Simoneaux is their #1 starter. We faced him once last season and scored 4 runs in 5 innings and won the game in 11. His numbers look a lot better than a 4.48 ERA. 76.1 IP 73 H 2 HR 25 BB 39 SO.

Panighetti has not won a game in his last 8 starts, even though he only allowed 1 run in 8 innings in each of his last two. He seems to be a bit prone to the long ball, though, and this is the place to show up that weakness.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: 2B Paul Bouvet (26-R .291-86-2-16-.856) NL MVP Gold Glove

2: LF Randy Hobson (26-L .311-196-5-20-.826)
3: 1B Miguel Favela (30-R .291-55-2-4-.806)
4: RF Mark Fenik (27-R .243-185-9-21-.757)
5: SS Paul Blaine (24-R .235-217-11-32-.694)

7: 3B Terry Singer (33-R .222-185-2-17-.645)
8: C Oscar Reynoso (27-R .255-51-4-13-.865) Rookie
9: P Dennis Simoneaux (28-R .143-21-1-1-.429)

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: The Kingdome
Weather: Indoors
Attendance: 21,610

Top of the First:

Paul Bouvet grounds out to 3rd. Tom Borden grounds out to 2nd. Omar Flores grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the First:
Joe Wasserman takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Randy Hobson grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4. Miguel Favela grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!

Top of the Second:

Jeff Austin leads off with a home run to left! 1 to 0, Beavers! Austin's 3rd home run in the last 4 games! With 2 outs, Jeff Schottler is up. He is the only player in our lineup who has faced Simoneaux before today, going 1 for 2. He triples to left center! Dennis Webb grounds a hit up the middle and Schottler scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! P Don Panighetti strikes out.

Through five innings, they have had 3 base runners, but have left none on base. We have turned two double plays and P Don Panighetti picked a runner off at 1st.

Bottom of the Sixth:

With 1 out, Oscar Reynoso grounds a single to right, their first hit of the game. PH Randy Dengler (30-L) lines out hard to center. Joe Wasserman grounds a hit to left and we get the Bullpen going. Randy Hobson strikes out!

Top of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Mike Aaberg (24-R), making his Major League debut. He was acquired Thursday in a trade with the Phillies. The scouts think a lot of him, though he is making the jump to the Majors from AA, where he had a 1.31 ERA. Dave Lesley swings at Aaberg's first Major League pitch and deposits it in the right field seats for a home run! 3 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Schottler swings at Aaberg's second Major League pitch and sends it to deep center, but it is caught against the wall. And Aaberg calls the trainer out and has to leave the game... New Pitcher: Hank Schneider (30-R). 3.05 ERA. With 2 outs, P Don Panighetti draws a walk, but Paul Bouvet lines out to 3rd.

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Scott Mortensen (33-R), who spells his name wrong... Tony Casarez leads off with a home run to center! 4 to 0, Beavers!

Won - 4 to 0

Panighetti's 2nd shutout of the season. Only Bill Avallone (31-R) of Dallas has more in all of Baseball! Avallone has 5.

We had 8 hits and made no errors
Seattle had 3 hits and made no errors

5 of our 8 hits went for extra bases.

Don Panighetti (W 3-2) went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 3 hits, 1 walk, 3 HB (!!) and struck out 6. At bat, he drew a walk.

Dennis Simoneaux (L 5-8) went 6 innings, gave us 2 runs, 5 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 3.

1B Jeff Austin hit his 8th home run of the season and 3rd in 4 days. LF Tony Casarez hit his 3rd home run of the year. SS Dave Lesley hit a double and his 2nd home run of the year. CF Jeff Schottler hit a triple and scored a run. C Dennis Webb had 2 hits and an RBI.

Seattle announced that rookie P Mike Aaberg had nothing more than a sore forearm and a sore ego and would be fine in a few days. Actually, they did not mention the ego, but it was not necessary.

Our 34th round pick, P Jim Ford (18-R) refused our $10,000 bonus offer. He wants $170,000. That is more than we gave all of our top picks that have signed combined! Neither the Scouting Bureau nor Dave Dafoe think he is worth a lick and his high school stats support their opinions...

Cincinnati made us a semi-tempting trade offer: CF Dave Tirone (27-R) for Frank Martin (27-R). Tirone was an All-Star and a Silver Slugger last year when he led all of Baseball in hits with 220, 58 of them for extra bases. He would slot very nicely into right field for us with Woody Griesbach failing to keep the job that was opened up for him this season. But I think if I made another trade, especially giving the last of our top 3 pitchers from last season away, I may be run out of town on a rail....

The latest updates of the All-Star voting are sparsely populated with any Beavers. SP Don Panighetti and RP Don Schmidt are the only Beavers among the leaders at their respective positions. Panighetti is 5th and Schmidt 3rd.

Portland Beavers (36-23 .610 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Seattle Rainiers (23-37 .383 13.5 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Dave Shoemake (27-R 1-0 0.00) Rookie vs. SEA: Les Theis (27-R 1-1 1.59)

This will be Theis' 3rd start of the season. Last year he made 2 starts without allowing a run....but only pitched 2 total innings. We have never faced him.

Shoemake pitched a 6 hit shutout in his Beaver debut. This will be his 2nd start for Portland.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: 2B Paul Bouvet (26-R .278-90-2-16-.820) NL MVP Gold Glove
2: RF Tom Borden (30-L .276-58-0-0-.647) Gold Glove
3: 3B Omar Flores (21-L .324-105-4-12-.883) Rookie
4: 1B Jeff Austin (30-R .229-214-8-26-.684)
5: LF Tony Casarez (20-L .234-124-3-7-.641) Rookie
6: SS Dave Lesley (27-R .279-129-2-6-.729)
7: CF Jeff Schottler (25-R .170-176-4-15-.531) WS MVP
8: C Phil Parker (28-S .200-10-0-0-.573)
9: P Dave Shoemake (27-L .000-4-0-0-.000) Rookie

SEATTLE
1: 2B Bob Dillon (27-R .179-78-1-8-.489)
2: LF Randy Hobson (26-L .305-200-5-20-.810)
3: RF Mark Fenik (27-R .241-187-9-21-.756)
4: 1B Jim Rier (27-L .286-147-9-30-.852)
5: 3B Paul Blaine (24-R .232-220-11-32-.685)
6: CF Jim Perkins (26-L .211-185-8-21-.664)
7: SS Monte Rodgers (26-L .233-43-0-2-.577)
8: C Ken Murray (32-R .261-153-6-18-.777)
9: P Les Theis (27-R .333-3-0-0-1.000)

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: The Kingdome
Weather: Indoors
Attendance: 19,831

Top of the First:

Paul Bouvet grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Tom Borden strikes out. He has gone pretty cold of late. Omar Flores pops out to short.

Bottom of the First:
Bob Dillon grounds a hit to right. Randy Hobson flies out to right. Mark Fenik is up and on the first pitch to him, we call a pitchout and, sure enough, Dillon is running and gets thrown out! Fenik strikes out!

Bottom of the Third:
Monte Rodgers and Ken Murray lead off with singles and P Les Theis bunts them up. Bob Dillon flies out to left and Rodgers scores. 1 to 0, Seattle. Murray goes to 3rd on the throw home and scores when Randy Hobson singles up the middle. 2 to 0, Seattle.

Bottom of the Fifth:

Bob Dillon leads off with an infield hit and we get the Bullpen up. That is their eighth hit already off Shoemake. Randy Hobson up and Dillon tries to steal, but we have another pitchout on and he is out. Hobson grounds one to 2nd, but Paul Bouvet throws the ball away for a 2 base error... Mark Fenik swings at a 3-2 pitch and homers to left... 4 to 0, Seattle. Call to the Bullpen: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). He gets 2 outs, but not until Jeff Austin makes our 2nd error of the inning.

Top of the Seventh:

With 1 out, Jeff Schottler grounds a hit up the middle. PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L) doubles off the center field wall and Schottler stops at 3rd. PH Barry Tucker (29-L) swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to left and both runners score! 4 to 2, Seattle. That is all, though...

Top of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Danny Karpowicz (30-R), their sidearming closer. He was Philadelphia's closer last year, but Seattle claimed him off waivers. 33 SV last year with a 9-6 record and a 3.89 ERA. Jeff Schottler leads off with a double to center! Gordon Saunderson swings at the first pitch and doubles to center and Schottler scores! 4 to 3, Beavers! Eddie Thomas (26-R) goes in to run for Saunderson. C Tod Schreck (31-R) grounds out to the pitcher and Thomas moves to 3rd. 1 out. With the infield in tight, Paul Bouvet nevertheless beats out an infield hit and Thomas scores to tie the game at 4!!! PH Larry Sinchak (31-R) lines a hit to center! Omar Flores grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. 2 outs with runners at the corners for Jeff Austin. Flores steals 2nd. Austin works the count full, but then grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). Rollie Ferree is in to play right. We have no one left on the bench except C Dennis Webb (26-L), who is a bit fatigued. They go down 1-2-3!

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Scott Mortensen (33-R) 2.86 ERA. He struck out the side in an inning yesterday, but not before we scored a run off him. Tony Casarez swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit up the middle. Dave Lesley bunts him to 2nd. They walk Jeff Schottler and his big batting average intentionally. Rollie Ferree swings at a 3-2 pitch and dumps a hit into left and Casarez scores without a throw! 5 to 4, Beavers! C Tod Schreck strikes out. He has been a great pickup! 3 for 23 (.130). Paul Bouvet grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Tenth:

Randy Hobson leads off and lines a hit to left. Our Bullpen is ready to jump in. They do have 1 lefty on their bench still. Mark Fenik grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!!! 3B Terry Singer (33-R), who was hoping to have the day off, is up. He strikes out and THIS Ball Game Belongs the Beavers!!!!

Won - 5 to 4 in 10 innings

We had 14 hits and made 2 errors
Seattle had 11 hits and made no errors

Dave Shoemake went 4.1 innings, allowed 4 runs (3 earned), 9 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 2. Lonny Tomski could have done that in his sleep!
LHP Mitch Dowdell went 1.2 scoreless innings.
LHP Lou Hertzberg went 2 scoreless innings and allowed 1 hit.
RHP Don Schmidt (W 7-3) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.

Les Theis went 7.1 innings, gave us 2 runs, 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.
RHP Scott Mortensen (L 0-1) went 1 inning, gave us 1 run, 2 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 1.

2B Paul Bouvet had 2 hits, stole a base and had an RBI. PH Larry Sinchak had a hit. 1B Jeff Austin had 2 hits. LF Tony Casarez had 2 hits and scored a run. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with a double and an intentional walk and scored 2 runs. His first 2 hit game in over 2 weeks (May 24). PH/RF Gordon Saunderson went 2 for 2 with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. PR Eddie Thomas scored a run. RF Rollie Ferree had a hit and the go ahead RBI in the 10th in his only AB. PH Barry Tucker had a hit and 2 RBI.

For Seattle, RF Mark Fenik had 3 hits with his 10th home run of the season and 2 RBI, but grounded into a huge double play in the bottom of the 10th.

Down on the Farm:
RF Woody Griesbach (24-R) had 3 hits with a double for Vancouver (AAA) at Tacoma to raise his average since being sent down to .333. We will call him back up and see if he can it like that for us. Lonny Tomski pitched a 4 hit shutout with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. We will give Dave Shoemake another start and if it is a stinker, we will swap him out for Tomski.

Editor's Note:
Both Rollie Ferree and Barry Tucker are hitting very well since being called up from Vancouver (AAA). If I was playing Stats Only, I would have sent Schottler to AAA to stay and those two would be starting every day until they cooled off. But since my scout says Schottler is a star in waiting and those two are stinkers, I keep giving Schottler the AB's. I don't like it.... The cool thing about stats only is EVERYONE is a potential star in your eyes, especially when they are young. The players that PRODUCE for you are the ones you want to play. The only players that I feel like that about with scouts on are relief pitchers, because most of them have excellent looking ratings; the only thing to tell them apart with is their results.

OF's Rollie Ferree (28-R) and Barry Tucker (29-L) have both been sent back to Vancouver (AAA) and thanked heartily for their great service. In Tucker, we are sending the reigning PCL Player of the Week to the minors... Two youngsters have been promoted, both right fielders: Woody Griesbach (24-R), who was with us earlier in the season, and Bob Draper (23-L). Griesbach hit .333 in 14 games for Vancouver, so we will see if he fixed whatever made him hit .168 for the Beavers. Draper will be making his Major League debut. He was batting .282 for Vancouver, leading the Western League in HR (11) and RBI (49). The two will platoon in right, for now.

We are back home for a two week home stand! First up, will be 3 games with the Oakland Oaks. They lost 3 of 4 in San Francisco over the weekend. We are 6-0 against them so far this season and swept them in 3 games the last time they were here, April 12-14. The Oaks are last in scoring in the PCL with 3.29 runs per game (Portland is up to 8th with 3.68). They are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.06 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.00).

We beat White the one time we faced him, scoring 4 runs in 8 innings, but he only gave us 5 hits and no home runs and walked 3.

Gaspar won last time out, allowing 2 runs in 7.2 IP.
