Mods Community Wiki

so unless I am wrong it seems we have lost the mod site person. these things happen, for years me and padresfan worked together to host ootp mods, even before that I have hosted mod files since 6.5. I have seen many mod sites come and go and it is time for a different solution, so here is what I am thinking.

OOTP Community Hub

I would pledge to continue to host and manage the mod files that need hosting.

I installed a wiki site (I would need some help, but i'll get to that) I don't have the desire to buy yet another domain name so it would have to be installed on a domain I already own, corporatebaseball.com/ootpmods

and here is how I envision it working, a mod creator could send me a file, I end them back a link (or host it someplace else, it really doesn't matter with a wiki who hosts the file) then they would register for the wiki and create a page for the mod, or a page for themselves and list their mods that way, it is up to the creators/community to decide exactly how to create/maintain each page (page creators can protect pages if the wish).

what I would need somebody, or a small team to help get the wiki set-up and do technical administration. while it only takes a minute to install, I don't have time to get the security set-up and get it looking good (ok I also lack the talent to make it look good, but that really is a secondary consideration) the day-to day stuff I can do, they only take a few minutes at a time and I actually kind of enjoy it. the back-end website stuff I can do, but it's a chore, I am slow and prone to frustration. So I really need a partner for that.

I hope I made sense, it has been a bad anxiety week and the first thing to go is written communication.

I am open to suggestion, criticisms, help or laughter.

Well I have several quickstarts. I also have a 14 conversion of Captain Walrus' All Timers league and a ballpark set called 115 ballparks who i have no clue who originally made it that is great fore pre 1950 leagues post 1900.
Depending on what is required, knowledge wise, I have the time to help.

well I went ahead and installed a wiki, why is it that no wiki has a proper admin interface? anyway.

OOTP Mods Community wiki

to make a page is only slightly harder than making a form post, I had never, ever edited a wiki page of any kind and I created one for B.o.B. in a couple minutes, mostly because the formatting is a little different, once I get used to using the thing it will be just as easy as some of the forum posts that go on around here.

check it out, throw a page up and see what you think, I don't actually have to host the files themselves, links are just links, I am just willing to.

OOTP Mods Community wiki

but I really do need somebody(s) who understands the configuration of wiki's to help out. the free for all world of the default is probably ok for now, but at some point, relatively soon, the settings need to be gone through by somebody with a hell of a lot more skill than me. I am happy to host the site, host files when need be, and even play schoolyard monitor when needed, but I need a plant manager type person.

well I messed something up, I edited a page I thought I was creating... so. editing a page is easy anyway. and I am sure creating one is easy as soon as I figure out how to turn creating pages on

the problem is I was thinking like a blog site creator not a wiki, this.will.be.interesting. I am so used to one way of doing things...

you search for a page, if it doesn't find it you can then create one, I feel not so smart

once I learned how, it only takes as long as a forum post

I have edited a few Wiki pages but I am not great at it and have never created on from scratch. I have helped on Wookiepedia and the Glee Wiki.

I would like to put the 115 ballparks file on there. How do I do that?

if the file has a home then just create a page with the link. main page now has instructions. if you need a home for the files send me a PM and i'll send you ftp info for the server. then you can just add a link to the page you create

I believe Charlie Hough is still running ootpmods.com. He posted in the beta forum a couple weeks ago that while he hasn't been all that active recently he is trying to find the time to update the site. Maybe you'd like to get in touch with him.

As for the wiki, how many times has it been tried now? I don't know why they're successful with other games, but not OOTP. Granted, I've never contributed to any other game wiki, but I've found others quite popular and useful. Is there some benefit to being attached to wikia.com? Do contributors get paid at some sites and that encourages contributions or something?

it took me over an hour but I figured out how to allow external images to be embedded, and it just requires that the simple link be posted, it reads the image automatically.

for somebody who know what they were doing it would have only taken a few minutes to find out how to do that, but non-the-less. if you look at the page for B.o.B. it really only took a minute once I know what I was doing.

time for a break. I have a sim to run in an hour

it's just so the mod creators can take care of their own mod pages, why should a mod creator have to wait for me, charlie or anybody else to share. with a wiki they have control of the when, what and how it is presented.

I am not really doing anything other than the same thing I have been for the last near decade, I just finally got smart about it.

and it is also a perfect example of why having a mod wiki is better than a single person having to update a website all the time. life happens, work, family, illness and desire change. if I get sick and am in the hospital for a month the wiki still works. nobody NEEDS me to host a file. there are plenty of other short/long term options if need be until I get around to it. but the wiki can still be updated.

and it is designed for the mods a specific purpose, they do work better at the start with a small focus. if the rest of the OOTP community wants to add to it they are welcome, but I am only really worried about a mod site that works for the modders and users... all the time.

but we will see, the resource is now in place, I have along history of not going anywhere. the communities got the ball now.

FWIW, my post wasn't meant to criticize. Sorry if it came off that way. It was only meant to provide info and ask questions. I'm happy to see efforts made to improve the game.

I do like the idea of trying to automate the process of sharing mods as it could lead to more mods being shared. I do wonder however if previous mod hosters ever worried about malware possibly being submitted and maybe that's why they never really wanted to automate the process because they felt stuff needed to be screened first. My guess is they just wanted to make play with the look of the site or just never thought of automating it.

sorry Q, I didn't intend to sound defensive. it actually helped me clarify to myself and the community what my intent is.

I have been at this a long time now, with a few partners over the years, security was not a main concern, it's the grand vision thing more often than not (even me). and the truth is a wiki is no more or less secure than say phpbb, if set-up properly. which is why I am asking for a bit of help with security set-up. and my host is pretty good in terms of thwarting attacks.

you & the CBL have been with me for a while and we have only had a handful of problems over the years and none recently so I feel as secure as you can with any website.

I still have files from v5-6.5 on the server + the ones from padresfan's old website, the server doesn't go away.

it's time for the mod makers to stop wondering "how do I share this" and then having to wait around, it's 2013 there is no longer a need

if I was in marketing for ootp then maybe I might see some value in something like wikia.com but i think it would just add a bunch of noise & make it less useful as a mods repository, and then less likely for it to grow into an all things ootp wiki. if people started using it then it would also be a good place for online leagues to share their overall stories, why it was created, who has been champion, halls of fame, that kind of thing. but it must start with a core, and the mods are begging for it.

and it's just a php DB install like phpbb, so it can be moved easily enough if it needs to be for whatever reason.

I'm signing up!

I'm an anal retentive chowderhead (according to my wife) who has tons of older mods on a dvd, and well, generally crams his logo/uni/ballpark folders full. As I have time, I'll be only too happy to add the things I've collected over the years.

Suggestion: Let's mark all the old mods with the version they work in, or take some time and convert them forward to work with the current versions of the game (or both).
