Baseball is a small world. 1981 (if you haven't noticed already, this was a big year for me), saw 24-year old Dave Stewart put in a solid 32 appearances out of the pen to help the Dodgers go all the way. With him on that squad was young Bob Welch.
Stewart never really broke out with the Dodgers and was traded to Texas for Pitcher Rick Honeycutt in 1983. Stewart continued to grow into himself as a pitcher, getting a lot more innings with the Rangers. Still, he was chasing his breakout season. He was traded to Philly in 1985 and was released a year later. He signed on with the A's in 1986 and caught fire. For the next 4 years, he never finished lower than 4th in Cy Young voting. He was an all-star in 1989. Here's where the small world part comes in. Welch stayed with the Dodgers until 1987 when he was traded to the A's. Honeycutt stayed with the Dodgers until 1987 when he was traded to the...A's. In 1988, the Dodgers and the A's met in the World Series. Facing the Dodgers were 3 very good recent Dodgers. Though they lost the series, the former Dodger pitchers went 22 innings allowing 6 earned runs (5 of them Stewart's). After his playing days ended, Stewart bounced between pitching coach and front office jobs, starting his own agency in between. He was GM for the Diamondbacks for the 2015-16 seasons.

Hal Woodeshick wore #46 for the Astros, but I could not find a pic showing his number.

Exciting player .... he hit big or missed big ... a strikeout every 2.75 AB's, but mostly remembered in Milwaukee for the game-tying HR
on Easter Sunday 1987 as the Brewers eventually won their 12th straight to start the season ... #45 Rob Deer
