In the Fighters Greyvenstein reports that in 1857 Mahmoud and Japie were fined 5 shillings each for a milling match in Capetown. This is, apparently, the first reported pugilistic event in South Africa.

It was a South African publication and not often found now-a-days.

Check the adavnced book exchange

A link to ABE can be found here.

http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ml#post2519308

If you don't find one on shopping on ABE try Lion Street books. Mark Williams may have one there. Mark is a nice guy but somewhat pricey and shipping from the UK costs an arm and a leg.

The late Chris Greyvenstein, was an IBRO member, and The Fighters is the best single volume history of boxing in South Africa. Book was published in 1981. Great photos, as Tosti can tell you. Biographical information on guys like Couper, Jeptha, and Laurie Stevens.

Boxrec gives even results for 15 of Schutte's ND results: 7 wins 7 loses and a draw.
A reported KO win over Young Kenny was changed to a NC because police halted the bout after Amby threw Kenny down.
New are 1 KO win, 3 WD's and 2 LD's
Appears to have been what the English term a useful fighter in the no decision era. Held is own versus stiff competition.
Given his competition, the .500 record given by boxrec is quite laudable.
Not sure where he hung his hat. Most of his activity centered in New York City and in philadelphia where he debuted.
I gave him a HP of 3 using my understanding of the old Trunzo formula from the old manual and made no -2 deduction for low level competition.
