I have players with their potential rating lower then current rating, Why?

I see this too. If you import historical players, often their current ratings are higher than their potential ratings.

Which to me means they were playing over their heads and in a "while" you will see the ratings drop to their "true" level at it below their potential

What it means, I think, is that the scout believes that the player is on a downhill slide. He may be great today, but Father Time has him in a rundown.

Interestingly, players who have declined sometimes regain high potential ratings, which I interpret as a hope of a late life revival, à al Sabathia this season. Almost always, it doesn't pan out.

Did you turn on Scouting based on AI evaluation instead of pure ratings because that can cause potential to be lower than current

There is a specific check mark that allows this. It can be turned off.

I don't think it is a scouting thing. I could be wrong though.

Looking at players numbers in the player editor many historical players import with higher current stats than potential stats, and when they are imported in their first major league year.

it's not unusual for fully developed players in their prime years to have ratings slightly above potential.
