Whatever Happened to Eddie?
One thing I like to do when I get a new OOTP game is sim the entire history of baseball; first, majors only, then, with the minors. (With minors on, it takes a while on my old computer: after 1980 or so, it crashes every few seasons.) Afterwards, I like to look in on my favourite non-star players, including the infamous Eddie Gaedel.
One thing, though: even though he's listed in the stats/Master file, Eddie never shows up in the game, even when the "Adjust" numbers are lowered to zero AB/IP. (According to the Master file, 110 players debuted in the majors in 1951, and every one of them is in the game...except Gaedel.) Also, Herb "Pinch Runner" Washington is MIA; so is Charlie "Victory" Faust, a team mascot who somehow pitched two games for the Giants in 1911, and probably others, too. Now, I can understand why OOTP ignores these guys -- they weren't real ballplayers anymore than you and I were -- but shouldn't every MLB player be included? (I seem to remember they would show up in previous editions of OOTP, but recent versions seem to omit them.) I don't know how to open the .odb files or I would check there. Suggestions?

OK, well...
I checked "database/players" and...no Eddie, or Herb or Faust. How come? And is this fixable...?

How? And can you adjust the database so this doesn't happen in the first place?

Go to the free agent screen Actions dropdown-select import historical player(s) Select Historical_database.odb Find the player ID on baseball Ref- in eddie's case gaedeed01 Copy/paste it in the 1st box, enter the season of the players career (in this case 1951) Make the other adjustments if needed in the other boxes and click import |

Format is lahman ID,year, and destination team Lahman ID can be found on baseball reference.com in the address of the player's page. For example Hank Aaron is aaronha01 Year is the year you want to import. Likely normally his first season but can be any year. Team is optional and only used if you want to import him directly to a team rather than as a free agent or draft pool player.
