Way to go Bruins! the 3 year championship parade drought felt like forever!

Thanks '98Yanks for this: With the Boston Bruins’ victory in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on Wednesday, New England became the first area to have championships in all four major pro leagues during this century. The Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 and 2007. The Patriots won Super Bowl titles in 2002, 2004 and 2005. And the Celtics won the NBA Finals in 2008.
I did some research, and the above accomplishment is the shortest period of time that a market has won titles in all four sports: 6 years, 4 months. The next closest seems to be NY during the fantastic 11 year, 8 month period from May 1976 till January 1987. It had 9 titles in the 4 major sports: Nets 1976, Yankees 1977-78, Islanders 1980-1983, Mets 1986 and Giants 1986. (NY though, being such a large market, has 9 teams vying for titles compared to 4 in Boston) I feel really blessed to be a Boston sports fan right now, and I mean that in a humble way. We're very lucky, and after this run ends I doubt we'll ever see anything like it here in my lifetime. I mean it takes SO MUCH luck to win a title -- we could easily have 2 more via the 2007 Patriots and the 2010 Celtics, but fate intervened in the last moments of each of those. I would love to see a market that hasn't won a recent title (or ever!) take one home one of these years. There are a lot of great sports fans out there who deserve to feel what this is like.

I wonder what the LONGEST period was for a city with representation in all four major league sports (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL) to go without a championship? I mean, I feel bad for Buffalo but they have only the one franchise . . .

I have a soft spot for Kansas City. The Chiefs have always been my #2 NFL team, and I've liked the Royals since the '70s. The fans in that town seem awesome. Given the league financial rules, the Chiefs seem to have a far easier shot than the Royals will ever have.
I feel badly for Cleveland too. They're gotten their hearts ripped out too many times. They deserve a title.

Hmm, how can BOSTON claim New England's win in the super bowl and not allow Tampa to claim Florida's win in the World Series and Miami's win in the NBA Finals?
What is the cut-off in distance between a city and the city being able to claim a championship? I herby arbitrarily claim Tampa as the first team to win all 4 championships this century. 2003- World Series- FLORIDA Marlins 2003- Super Bowl- Tampa Bay Bucs 2004- Stanely Cup- Tampa Bay Lightning 2006- NBA Finals- South Florida Heat if a team that represents all of New England can be considered Boston's team, then a team that represents all of South Florida can be consider Tampa's team.

Not looked into it deeply but wouldn't Chicago lay claim to "Titletown" with the White Sox in 2005, Bears in 85, Bulls in 98 and Blackhawks in 2010 going of recent titles and city limits.

Tampa and Miami are 200 miles apart. Boston and New York are 200 miles apart. We should merge their titles together. |

Actually, Tampa and Miami's shortest route on Google Maps is 265 miles, while NY and Boston are 214. That makes your point even more correct.

A state is not a market. It goes by metro areas.
Examples Dallas/Fort Worth New York - all 5 burroughs San Fran Bay Area (San Fran/Oak/San Jose) Doesn't Qualify Seattle/Portland (I'm biased growing up between the two but in WA, closer to Portland...but I still say no)...only 150 or so miles apart. Dallas/Houston/San Ant Anything in Florida not in the same city/suburb Baltimore/Washington D.C. (less than 60 miles apart but distinct "markets" in terms of sports due to high population levels) |
