Emeralds make "final cut"
EMERALDS SHED ALI, JOURNELL. AND SAY "TRADING IS DONE"
PORTLAND - Emeralds owner Tom Whitley gave everyone the impression he was preparing for a fire sale a few months ago. In reality, he wanted to cut big contracts and get salary in a "more managable place." He did that today by sending Catcher Cassius Ali and SP Jimmy Journell to Toronto for C Thomas Walters - who began his career in Oregon - and a minor leaguer. "We have completed our mission," said Whitley. Oregon's payroll went from the highest in baseball at over $100 million to 17th, at about $68 million. "We improved our club and were able to shed lots of salary. Not many teams can do that and still be contenders. But we will continue to be," said Whitley. The Oregon Emeralds have eight straight division titles (2004-present) and won three straight World Series titles from (2008-2010). They are currently in first place in the AL Pacific Division, leading Tokyo by 2 games. TORONTO TRADES JOURNELL TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays sent SP Jimmy Journell and reliever Mike MacDougall to Cincinnatti for emerging RF David Starke and SP David Greening - who originally played in Oregon. "We're delighted to get an emerging starter like David Greening for our club," said Blue Jays GM Dave Stewart. Meanwhile, the Reds are hoping Journell can keep them in a pennant race. Reds ownership has considered offers to move the club, but has not made any official announcements. "We are happy here and have no comment," said a spokesman. |

THE BASEBALL INSIDER
THE BASEBALL INSIDER
JOURNELL TO REDS: I HATE THIS !#$# PLACE! Cincinnati Reds starter Jimmy Journell, traded to his third club in just over a month said he wants out of Cincy. The two-time Cy Young Award winner said he wants to play for a winner and that spending his time in Cincinnati will not cut it in a free agent year. "Look at this club?! They're not trying to improve when I'm the only pitcher on the mound that gives them a chance to win. I can't go everyday. What are they doing?" he said. Cincinnati ownership would not comment on the rumors. NELLY RIDES BACK TO NEW ORLEANS NEW ORLEANS - Oregon Emeralds star Cornell "Nelly" Haynes, Jr. has been traded to the NL South leading New Orleans Pelicans for two minor leaguers yesterday. As stipulated in Nelly's league-minimum deal, he has the power to request a trade and to have it executed to wherever he wants to go. He wanted to go to St. Louis, but the club didn't have a need for him. "I didn't want to go there and mess that good thing they go going. Here, I can chill in the cut down in Nawlins and help them boys win a title, ya heard meh? Haynes, 32, has been an integral part of the baseball landscape in Oregon during just over 2 years there. He earned his second all-star apperance last season with the club and had his fourth straight 100+ RBI season, with a career high 14 triples. The Pelicans are already preparing for the player's arrival and Nelly is reportedly working on a record deal and movie blockbuster produced by mogul Master P detailing his rise from poverty to rap star to baseball star. "It's gonna be called Diamonds and it should be HOT," he said. Production should begin in the off-season. Master P is reportedly interested in buying a stake in the club to keep it from moving. New owner Red McCombs has not made any statements regarding the club's future in New Orleans, but has stated he would be interested in having a team in his native San Antonio. |

NEW ORLEANS ON FIRE!!
PELICANS RESURGENT!!
NEW ORLEANS - The beginning of season had many certainties attached. One was that the New Orleans Pelicans - nee Milwaukee Brewers - would continue to languish in futility and would likely be moved by owner Red McCombs at the end of the year. Alas, this is no longer the case. The Pelicans, who have made a few moves like turning sometimes reliever Matt Anderson into a starter and have made acquisitions like Nelly from Oregon and Jimmy Journell from Cincinnati are owning the NL South this season, en route to what the club hopes will be its first playoff appearance since the 1980s in Milwaukee and first in a long, boring history in the Modern Era. "We haven't had much to cheer about down here. This is awesome," said Teddy Wilkins, a welder from Biloxi, Mississippi. On June 15th, the Pelicans held a 15 game lead on Arizona and sported the best record in baseball. "Who would've expected this a year ago? I never would've," said manager Paul Molitor. GWYNN GETS HIS CHANCE RENO - When the National League completed the second phase of Modern Era expansion, many traditionalist fans scoffed at the notion of baseball sustaining such growth at the major league level. The players union on the other hand, stated that there were so many players who were great and falling through the cracks. One example of a player who just needed a chance is Nevada outfielder Anthony Gwynn. He comes from the bloodlines of greatness, Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn of the San Diego Padres. But this prince of baseball royalty never got a shot. After being drafted in 2004 with the 40th overall pick (2nd round) by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Gwynn never got more than cups of coffee in the majors. Prior to this season, he had a total of 11 major league at-bats, despite average batting over .300 in the past eight years in AAA. Well, enter the Nevada Silverhawks. Manager Ferguson Jenkins knew of Gwynn and asked management to acquire the young player. "We knew he was too good to be playing in the minors. He was just forgotton on that club," said Jenkins. Since coming to Nevada, he has made the most of his opportunity. Gwynn is hitting .310 with 2 homers and 6 doubles in his first 113 At-bats this season, giving one the idea that he will be a fixture at this level for the foreseeable future. "I'm glad I got a chance. I knew that my shot would come, I wasn't sure when or how it would happen. But I'm really glad it came now. Hopefully, I can stay here in Nevada and help these guys out. They gave me my first chance and I never want to forget that opportunity," he said. WHAT?! Gazing the standings on June 21st and you would see a very unfamiliar team atop the standings of the AL Pacific division. Its not so much that the team was unfamiliar, as the team that was NOT leading the division was. The Oregon Emeralds are three games behind the Seattle Mariners, who have retooled in an effort to break the eight year lock the Ems have held on the division title. "We want to do whatever we can to make this work this season," said Mariners manager George Brett, who is reportedly working with the Modern Era to secure either an expansion franchise in 2018 for Kansas City or having the Cincinnati Reds move there, if that club decides to follow through and leave the city. "No comment! We're just going to work hard here in Seattle and see if we can't win this thing," said Brett. League Standings and other information regarding teams may be accessed at the league site Player cards are not updated and will not be until the end of the season for the Modern Era. |

THE CONTINENTAL DAILY
All the news fit to print on the CL! CONTINENTAL LEAGUE TO MOVE SCHEDULE The Continental League announced today that starting next season, the league would begin its schedule earlier. While this will mean clubs in cold weather climates will need to play games early in the season in warmer climates, this move aims to faciliate players moving on to organized baseball during a "regular season". "We wanted to make it possible for our players to continue to play in the Continental League, while pursuing their major league dreams," said Ozzie Smith, who was elevated to Comissioner of the league. Smith has been said to use his contacts with the majors to develop an informal feeder system between the league's clubs and the Modern Era. Next season's schedule will begin on February 1st. Coming soon....CL Player Updates from the 2012 Season! Last edited by darkcloud4579; 07-16-2003 at 02:29 PM. |

EMERALDS THROWING IN TOWEL
REIGN HAS APPARENTLY ENDED
PORTLAND - A lot can happen when a team is only seven games out of the division lead. Especially when that team is the Oregon Emeralds, the eight-time defending AL West/Pacific division champions, who have won three World Series titles during their reign. However, the Whitley's have decided to end all that. With the club distancing itself from the pack in the wrong direction, the Whitley's have decided to "break up" the club, opting for cheaper and "more productive" prospects, they say. "We want to be the team that gets bang for our buck. We want to be known as the Oregon Value!", said Whitley. Unforuntately, most fans are not supporting value, they want titles. Despite that, attedance in Oregon still seems to be soaring over 4 million for what would be the sixth time in seven years. Nonetheless, team payroll is down to about $45 million, its lowest level since the 2003 season when the team was a lowly expansion club in its first year. "We'll show baseball how its done, just like we did Amway," he said. Sure you will. THE DUMP CONTINUES...PRIOR, HETFIELD HEAD TO LA LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Dodgers reaped benefits fo the Oregon salary dump today after receiving SP Mark Prior and 2B Will Hetfield from the Oregon Emeralds for SP Mark McGrew, SP Jerry Bohanon and a minor leaguer. The Dodgers are six games back of San Francisco for the NL West lead. TEJADA TO TORONTO TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays today acquired SS Miguel Tejada, SP Sandy Chance and a reliever from Oregon for SP Jeremy Affeldt, Chad Pleiness and a minor league shortstop. The deal was puts Oregon 33rd in the league (out of 36 teams) in payroll, but team ownership stands by its position that the team will grow "better with age". The Ems are 9 games back of the AL Pacific leading Seattle Mariners. |

Fear not...the site will return shortly
The league site is down presently, because I spiked the directory and wanted the game to put just the files for this league in it. I think it was getting bogged down with a ton of files that were old and I felt like that was the best way to do it - well, save my going in there and doing it manually.
So...stay tuned and I'll post when the site is updated. Lots of news to discuss! Last edited by darkcloud4579; 07-16-2003 at 06:20 PM. |

UPDATES ON LOCAL STARS...
THE CONTINENTAL DAILY
HANLEY HAS GREAT FIRST SEASON IN PRO BALL O'FALLON, IL - Southern Illinois Snappers 1B Jordan Hanley had a great first season in professional ball. Hanley, 23, received praise from his teammates and other league players after his first campaign in the Continental League, in which he hit .304, with 25 homers and 71 RBI. "We think Jordan has immense potential to be a player in this league," said Snappers manager Wally Joyner. Hanley expects to get better and says he hasn't lost his goal to make it to the majors. "I had a few offers for minor league deals, but I don't think I want to leave here yet. I'm not a star and I think I can be. I need to work hard on my game and being surrounded by guys like Wally Joyner is going to turn me into a real gamer," he said. Hanley Player Card AMON STILL ON THE TAXI, WAITING FOR HIS BIG BREAK NORTHERN VIRGINIA - The Lancers gave Anthony Amon the game of a lifetime, making him the youngest player to play in a professional game in over seventy years, despite that, the young star has yet to play in another game for the club. "We're just wanting him to take his time, get some practice on the B team and when the time is right, we'll bring him up," said Lancers GM Darrell Smith. Amon, 17, is said to be getting frustrated with waiting, but understands the club's rationale. "I know they just want me to get better. But if I don't play, how I am supposed to progress? I might have to consider other options," he said regarding his future. There are rumors that several major league clubs are interested in signing the young prospect, who would not be subject to the draft since he signed with an independent league club. "He still needs some seasoning, but I'd love to see him go to a club that would have the luxury of letting him spend some time on the farm, rather than rushing him to the majors to sell tickets," said one AL scout. CONTINENTAL LEAGUE NEWSBRIEF...
PERRIGO GETS DRAFTED INTO CONTINENTAL LEAGUE
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Jesse Perrigo, a 19 year old Centerfielder from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD was drafted by the Carolina Bombers of the Continental League. Perrigo, played two years at "Augie", leading NCAA Division II in hitting his sophomore season, before leaving college. "I've decided that I can take my talent to a higher level. I heard about the tryouts and wanted to get here as fast as I could," he said. Despite the fact that a number of major league clubs considered his talent to be a few years away, Perrigo said he intends to prove them wrong and someone will take a chance on him. "I'm here to prove to myself that I can be the best player I can be. I know I have the talent, all I need is the opportunity and hopefully, I'll get that chance in Carolina," he said. At 52-72 last season, Carolina finished 28 games out of first in the Mays Conference last year and 17 games behind Delaware for a spot in the Final Four. "We hope that Jessie can help us fill some gaps we have on this club," said Bombers GM Wicky Matterson. Matterson said that the club is thrilled they were able to acquire a player of his talent, but want to pace him. "We don't want him to get out there and hurt himself. We're gonna break him in slowly." Perrigo Player Card |

CLOSING IN ON RECORDS...
There are a number of players closing in on some milestones.
Let's take a look at those that have been achieved, while the others that have been passed. ALEX RODRIGUEZ, TEXAS RANGERS Already the all-time Modern Era home run leader at 742, and RBI leader at 2033, A-Rod is coming to the winding portion of his career. He is fourth all-time in hits, just eighty hits shy of 3000, which would make him the third person to do so in the history of the Modern Era. With just seven hits, he will tie Ken Griffey, Jr., for third on the all-time list. The future Hall of Famer is also just 19 runs shy of 2000, making him only the third person to achieve that milestone. CARLOS BELTRAN, RALEIGH BLUE STRIPES Some things changes, others stay the same. For Carlos Beltran, he's been the rock of consistency for years now. Beltran will likely be the first member of the Blue Stripes to have his number retired, since the club moved from Kansas City. "Just like George Brett is the face of the Royals, Carlos is the face of this Raleigh Blue Stripes club," said longtime manager Tony Pena. Beltran's 39-game hit streak this season was the longest in franchise history. With just five triples, he will surpass Tim Raines for the Modern Era all-time record for triples in a career (113). Beltran is also just 9 steals away from reaching Barry Bonds for fifth all-time on the stolen base list. Other notable milestones Scott Rolen, St. Louis Cardinals, is just 19 doubles away from tying Larry Walker's all-time record (644). Tim Hudson, New Jersey Knights, managed to hit 20 wins for the first time since 2000. He has 40 wins over the past two seasons and at age 37, reminds many of Roger Clemens, who many figured was finished. "He's really come around," said an AL scout. Hudson is now sixth all-time in wins and should be preparing for a bronze statue in Cooperstown. Nicholas Rank, New Jersey Knights, Rank is 178 strikeouts behind Greg Maddux for fourth all-time. After all, he'll need another 1,000 or so to reach Pedro Martinez at 3857 for 3rd all-time. At his age (30), its not impossible. Eric Gagne, Anchorage Sky Chiefs, Gagne is just 25 saves away from 400 saves. Only three other players have reached this milestone. Leonard Hobbes, Texas Rangers, Hobbes is the all-time complete games leader at 123. Scott Chance is the only active player (105) within striking distance, as Hobbes figures to have a few good years left in him. Career Leader Board |

CL VETS ALUMS MAKE IMPACT IN MAJORS
SCOUTS EXPECT FLOOD OF CONTINENTAL LEAGUE TALENT TO MAKE IMPACT IN MODERN ERA
Few expected players coming over from the Continental League to the majors to have the impact they did in 2012, but few in the CL were surprised. "We knew there is talent in this league. Those guys went up there and proved it," said Ozzie Smith. The best of the exports was C Alejandro Massa who with the chance to play everyday in Nevada, made the most of his opportunities. He hit 39 homers and had 125 RBI in his first major league season. Not bad for a guy who was playing for peanuts compared to his salary at the league minimum in the Modern Era. Massa led Nevada in homers, RBI, batting average and was second on the team in steals. Adalberto Silva made his triumphant return to Puerto Rico, only it wasn't very triumphant. He was 4-19 with a 4.82 ERA. He had 283 strikeouts and should get a number of looks from teams needing starters in the future. "He's a solid guy and if San Juan doesn't misuse him, someone else would love to acquire him in a trade," said one NL GM who refused to be named. Finally, Delmer Hayes was actually traded in his first Modern Era season. San Juan sent him to Great Plains, who were in a pennant race. He hit .287 with 19 homers and 75 RBI in his rookie season. At age 35, he knows his days are numbered. "I'm glad I've got the chance to play here. I knew I was qualified and I'm glad teams are showing interest," said Hayes. The next crop of Continental League signings should occur soon. The teams are salivating at the new era of players who should come over to make an impact. The Board of Governors is considering a supplemental draft to prevent teams from hording talent and will announce provisions for signing independent league players in the next few days. 2012 PLAYOFFS
THE SEATTLE MARINERS are only the second team to ever win the AL Pacific division. Though the division has been around for a number of years now, the Oregon Emeralds virtual chokehold on the title was ended this season.
The club met Texas Rangers in the AL Division Series and despite a valiant effort, fell in seven games. Meanwhile, the New Jersey Knights cruised past the Indianapolis Racers in five games, to advance to the ALCS again. In the ALCS, the Knights made lightwork of Texas and advanced to the World Series for the third time in franchise history. In the National League, the NEW ORLEANS PELICANS won their first division title in franchise history - in New Orleans - and the first overall for the franchise since 1982 (as the Milwaukee Brewers). Despite the excitement and putting up a good fight, the Chicago Cubs defeated the Pelicans in six games. In the other Division Series, the upstart San Francisco Giants swept the New York Mets. The showdown between the Giants and Cubs turned out to be a dud in the end, as the Giants won four straight after dropping the first two, to win the Series and advance to the World Series. Both teams were appearing in the second World Series in the modern era. The difference was, New Jersey won their lone appearance (2007) as the bypass team and San Francisco was stopped by the Oregon juggernaut in 2009. This time, the Giants were the steam engine. They won the World Series 5 games to 1 and capture the first World Series title for the franchise in its San Francisco history. This also marks the second straight year that an NL club has won the title. |

LARS? PALMER? MEET THE NEW YOUNG GUNS
Two men hold the American and National league batting and home run records.
These met set the records in different years, with different clubs. One is a 19-year old from Germany. The other, a 24 year old from Shawnee Mission, Kansas. Both are bonafide stars. This season, Lars Heinreich, made American and National League pitching his own personal batting practice. Heinreich of the San Diego Padres, traded there earlier in the season, hit 84 homers this season, destroying Barry Bonds former record of 73 and distancing himself from the 60 homers Babe Ruth hit in a 154 game season. "Lars will be remembered like the Babe years from now." said media critic Wesley Smith. Heinreich is becoming an institution throughout the nation. People remember his name as just "Lars" and don't mention his last name. He's going to be one of the first baseball players to have the kind of recognition that we afford to guys like Tiger Woods or Lebron James. Speaking of King James, Emperor Lars is heading to the throne in a commerical between the two. King James will be sitting on the throne, when Emperor Lars will enter with his royal court. The two will play video games, while their court members shuffle through with Nike shoes. "It's going to be a great commercial," said a Nike spokesman. Meanwhile, New York Mets star catcher Palmer Mienkietwicz is being known for more than just his obscure last name. Palmer hit .436, ironically the lowest batting average of his young career this season. That was good enough for the best in the National League....by 68 points. "We've never seen young players take the game by storm with such energy and poise. This is generally the domain of other sports. But baseball is making a push to display the swagger and the star power of its players, especially these young stars." "If they keep it up, we'll be talking about them for many, many years," said New Orleans Pelicans manager Paul Molitor. |

FREE AGENT FRENZY
Modern Era teams jockeying for position in 2013 made a number of changes this off-season, by throwing out cash to tons of players.
Big winners in this year's sweepstakes: RF Vlad Guerrero, 2 years/$13.5 million, TORONTO SP Allan Simpson, 5 years/$68.75 million, NEVADA C C.J. Bressoud, 5 years/$35 million, NEW ORLEANS SP Jesse Foppert, 6 years/$79.2 million, BALTIMORE RF Rick Ankiel, 3 years/$12.93 million, NY METS the story on Ankiel is there is talk of him playing in the outfield, if he can't find his control. In the Modern Era, he found it, but then the "problems" occured again and he had to go to the minors, learn the new position and since he's always been a decent hitter, this isn't so far fetched, just kinda weird. Last season was his first full season as a position player. Look up his player card if you're curious.. SP Ajani Russell, 5 years/$96.85 million, HOUSTON BIG WINNERS The Nevada Silverhawks made a 10 player deal with the New York Mets, who have decided to shed payroll. The deal should help improve the Silverhawks, who with their free agent signings could be one of the surprise teams this season. Can Ajani Russell help turn the fate of the Houston Astros around? Will the murmurs of "move to San Antonio" cease? BREAKING THE CURSE The Red Sox are about to be sold to a local group of ownership, that should renew the fight to help the team begin to win games and respectability. While the Cubs have argubaly been decent in the Modern Era, the Sox have fell off over the past few years. SALARY CAP BLUES The talk of a salary cap is brewing with the Board of Governors again. This time, the teams are arguing that the same teams win and fans are tired of seeing it. "They want action, not predetermination," said Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo. The teams are considering pushing a resolution that would implement a salary cap as early as this season. The players are against the move and are looking to force an override, since some owners are not in favor of the plan. More news later... |

SUPPLEMENTAL DRAFT IMPLEMENTED
NEW YORK - The Board of Governors today implemented a new "supplemental draft" for players in independent leagues, who are not otherwise subject to the amateur draft.
The draft will only include the eight worst teams during the previous season, this is an aim to help develop the worst clubs, said Board of Governors chair Bob Costas. "We're trying to develop our product and help all teams compete. This is another way to ensure the talent is spread throughout the league." This draft will take place at the end of the Continental League season sometime in June, right around the all-star break period in the Modern Era. "This will work great, to give teams a boost right before the break," said one NL scout. Players in the Continental League are buzzing about the prospects of the two-round draft. "We're thrilled. This gives us all a chance," said Jordan Hanley, a first baseman with the Southern Illinois Snappers, a league club outside St. Louis. "Our players deserve a chance to showcase their talent with the best and this will give them an opportunity to prove themselves among the best," said Ozzie Smith, league Commissioner about the decision. |

THE SWAMI'S PRE-SEASON FAVS
Hey there, its the Swam! Here are my pre-season picks for Modern Era baseball
AL East: Boston Red Sox The Sox have retooled and I think this is their year to do it. Despite the juggernaut in Jersey and a floundering New York Yankees squad, I expect the Sox to do big things this year with a bolstered lineup that can compete with any in the bigs. AL Central Toronto Blue JaysThe Jays are flying high once again. This club, will have to fight the Racers hard, but in the end, I think the birds will win it in a hare. AL Pacific Anchorage Sky ChiefsHow can you go against the SKY CHIEFS?! This club is due to win after years of being frustrated behind the Oregon juggernaut. They'll pull it out in 2013. AL South Baltimore OriolesCan the SWAM go for the quad-fecta? That's right he can. This club is retooled and fresh off a ring, Jesse Foppert is going to help lead the O's to victory, celebrating the sale of the club after their longtime owner Peter Angelos died who wrecked one of the proudest franchises in baseball. NL East Pittsburgh PiratesThe Bucs are back, after handing the keys to the Mets for the past two years. NL Central Great Plains Express Baseball in the heartland! This club stake its claim to the first division the franchise has seen in its history, because remember, that old Marlins team only won a Wild Card. NL West Nevada Silverhawks We're going to be sitting in centerfield, at the Brewery Restaurant, on the bar stool seats, facing Centerfield. I'll be there, waiting to cheer on the 'HAWKS in their pursuit of the World Series NL South New Orleans PelicansIs this year for the birds? This club has hard a long road to get where it is now. I know they'll be the best thing this city has seen since...the SAINTS...Since they're no longer marching in and the Hornets have lost their sting, all hope rests on this club. With that fans, the Swam signs off. |

HAINKEL TRADED TO BALTIMORE
RANGERS TRADE STAR TO O'S
April 5, 2013 BALTIMORE - The Texas Rangers sent 3B Alan Hainkel to the Baltimore Orioles today for 3B Mark Ellis and a minor league catcher. Hainkel, 32, is a four-time all-star who spent about 5 1/2 years over three stints with the Texas Rangers. The club originally traded him to the New York Mets during the 2011 season, but the Mets sent him back later that season. Last season, Hainkel had his best season offensively since his rookie season hitting 27 homers, with 114 RBI for the Rangers, making the all-star team for the first time since 2006. "We're delighted to have a guy like this on our club," said Orioles Manager Eddie Murray. Hainkel ironically earned the nickname "Brooks" after the Orioles great third baseman for his slick fielding. Hainkel has seven gold gloves in this his 11th year in the majors. |
