RED MCCOMBS BUYS STAKE OF PELICANS

VIKINGS OWNER BUYS INTO TEAM
SAN ANTONIO - The New Orleans Pelicans ownership group have divested their majority stake in the club and sold it to Minnesota Vikings owner and San Antonio business magnate Red McCombs. McCombs is rumored to interested in moving the team to San Antonio, where he has previously owned a CFL franchise and was once rumored to move the Vikings.

"I have no comment," said McCombs on the matter. Despite his silence, Aaron Brooks and his group will keep their minority share in the club. "Sorry man, contract time and its hard for me to keep pumping money into a losing operation. I know Red will get the ship straight," said Brooks.

New Orleans is the 42nd largest TV market in the US, while San Antonio is slightly larger at 37th.

LEAGUE LOOKING AT TV MARKETS HEAVILY
With one last round of expansion left in the Modern Era, at a yet to be named time, the league is looking heavily at the largest television markets in the US, but is also looking abroad.

"We want to ensure the game grows worldwide, but ensure that the markets in the US are nurtured first and foremost", said Bob Costas of the Board of Governors.

Some of the US markets being considered include Nashville, Hartford, Columbus, Milwaukee, Memphis, Buffalo, Kansas City, Salt Lake City and Oklahoma City.

Expansion isn't expected again for at least another 10-15 years.

DARK CLOUD LEAVES CENTURION

NEW YORK - A shocking announcement comes out of New York, as Centurion magnate, Dark Cloud has announced that he will resign, amid a scandal.

"No matter what you hear, I am innocent on all charges", he said in a press conference. Dark Cloud was reportedly vacationing in Maine at his summer home, when a pool girl came to clean his pool. That girl, Jolene Adams, a 19 year old from Augusta, said Dark Cloud said that he wanted to "rain on her parade" and accosted her.

"These allegations simply are not true. You'll find out the truth in the end," he said.

Well, the truth came out. In reality, there was no pool girl. Instead, Dark Cloud said he decided to step away from Centurion for a while, to pursue other interests.

"I believe I can be an asset to the Modern Era while not actively running a club", he said. No replacement has been named as of yet.

Nonetheless, the league will go on and games will go as schedule. "This is a great loss for baseball," said Bob Costas after the announcement.

"He was a respected man. Everyone wants to play for him," said Mets owner Fred Wilpon.

Dark Cloud said he had intentions of a Jordan-esque return to the sport, but has not ruled out a comeback. "I know that the game will bite and at that point, I will come return. But now it is time to go", he said.

2012 EXPANSION DRAFT

Because of the absolute terrible time some of the past expansion clubs - Tokyo, Orlando, to a lesser extent - have had without such a draft, I figured it would be good to implement one for this season to see how well it works.

The rules are simple. Players on the 25 man roster are ineligible, as are players ranked in the Top 40 prospects (to simulate the 40 man roster) can be drafted.

Nevada won the coin toss and recieved the first pick.

OREGON OWNER DEMANDS SLASH

NEW OWNERSHIP NOT "SPEND ALL" TYPES
PORTLAND - There was a time in Oregon when Paul Allen's money on the stadium and Centurion handling the books was all the club needed to stay afloat. If things didn't go well, spend spend spend was the mantra. According to new owners Tom and Dolores Whitley, that is no more.

The Whitleys made their fortune in Amway, the home pyramid scheme that has swept the nation. These Amway billionaires bought a baseball team for their son Bobby, who is sixteen, but cannot run the team legally. Thus, Mr. Whitley has taken over the club until Bobby finishes his major league career - he's presently in high school - and then can take over the team.

"This club is what Amway can do for people," he said. "We want a club that emphasizes the Amway method in all its development. We're going to create a winner, because that's what our junior wants. But we're not spending $100 million to do it. No way. Back in my day, teams didn't spend $100 million to win a World Series. Look at last year?! We didn't even win the Series!," said Tom.

The Emeralds should shed between $30-$35 million in salary before the beginning of the season.

CONTINENTAL LEAGUE TO IMPORT STARS

LEAGUE PLAYERS SHOULD BOLSTER TALENT
The Continental League, founded in 1971, is an independent semi-professional league that has acquired cult-like status among GMs for years. Many of the players earn virtually no pay at all, simply playing the league's 114 game schedule for the "love of the game". It is a 12-team league, with no contracts and where the largest stadium doesn't get over 17,000 seats.

The largest markets - Detroit and Cleveland - were moved in 1987 in favor of Columbia, SC and Lansing, MI. The team folded two teams in 1989 and added two more that year in Wyoming Valley, PA and in Cedar Rapids, IA.

These talented stars are being given the opportunity to play in the Modern Era, through a collaboration that will import these stars into the league as free agents and their progress will be tracked over the years.

"For the average fan, this initiative will give them hope that they too can someday play Major League Baseball", said Board of Governors Chair Bob Costas. The Players Association is against the proposal because it might take away jobs, but has said it will support the decision after a 17-13 vote of the Board of Governors, with absententions, to approve the move.

Continental League players will begin to make appearances beginning in the 2012 season.

ALEJANDRO MASSA FIRST CL PLAYER SIGNED

NEVADA MAKES MASSA FIRST CL SIGNING
RENO - "Spooky" Massa makes history today as the first Continental League player to be signed to a major league club. "Today is a historic day for our league," said CL Comissioner Leonard Coleman announced today.

"Spook is gonna show those boys how to play ball", said Manager Rickey Henderson of the Delaware Blue Rocks, one of the founding franchises of this 12-team league.

Massa is expected to move into a starting position on the expansion club and a number of other CL players are expected to join him shortly. "We are scouting the CL for talented players, to help bolster our new club", said San Juan Swarm owner Peter Nicholas.

Massa is a three-time league MVP, has won three batting titles and has a World Series ring (the league championship is called The Ring") and says he's ready to make believers out of the GMs who said CL players weren't good enough.

"We're coming..and we'll show them".

SWARM SIGN PUERTO RICAN GREAT

Adalberto Silva

Silva, 35, is a four-time all-star who has established himself as one of the all-time greats of the Continental League. Silva says he always wanted to come home and play for his hometown team.

"I always wanted to come back, when there was team here. Now that we have one, I am glad I have chance to play and help them win," he said.

Silva should be in the San Juan rotation.

The team also signed 3B Delmer Hayes from Lansing.

We'll be monitoring their progress throughout the year to see how these new entrants are doing.

A note about the Continental League

Players in the CL making over $11 million are not making money in US dollars. See, the CL pays it players in Jamaican Dollars.

Basically, divide whatever the salary is by 59 to get the actual salary in US dollars. It only matters for contracts. All players coming from the CL to the Modern Era therefore, will make the league minimum, but can become free agents after just three years of service.

CONTINENTAL LEAGUE ANNOUNCES OPEN TRYOUT

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (AP) - The Continental League, fearing a raid of its talented players from the Modern Era, has announced open tryouts to recruit the best and brightest amateur players from around the world to participate in its leagues.

"We know there are plenty of fans, reading the threads worldwide and watching our telecasts, that desire their shot at playing the National Pastime. We want to give them that chance", said League Director of Recruitment Ozzie Smith. The Wizard said that players would need to complete a form stating their name, position, handedness or other information to entered into the league database, if they wished to be considered.

"We want to give everyone an opportunity, but this is a limited offer. The tryouts will end on June 20th at midnight. All players not registered by this date, will not be considered." said Smith.

If you want to be a player in the Continental League, just a stone throw (well..okay, maybe not) away from a chance to make it to the Majors and have DC write about you incessently, then post along by the deadline Ozzie said in the press release. That is all.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS SIGNS LOCAL STAR TO CONTRACT
O'FALLON, IL - The Southern Illinois Snappers of the Continental League today signed former Illinois Central College standout Jordan Hanley today to a contract.

"We're delighted this young standout has decided to start his professional career here in his home state of Illinois," said Snappers GM and former Major Leaguer Wally Joyner. Joyner is also the manager and hitting coach for the team. "We have a fine team here and we know with Jordan on our club, we're going to contend for The Ring," said Joyner.

Hanley, 22, spent a year at the Knox College in Galesburg, IL, a Division III institution, but had a falling out with the coach and left. "We didn't see eye to eye about my playing time. I told him I could do better things for the offense, but he wasn't hearing me. So I left," he said.

After a year working at the local Best Buy and playing for a semi-pro men's team, he earned a scholarship to play at Illinois Central College, a junior college whose most famous alum is former Major League star Jim Thome.

"We all look to him as our gold standard. I want to be the next great player from ICC and to represent us well," said Hanley at the press conference, with members of the local media and a local cable access TV host.

"So, do you think you'll be able to handle the pressure of moving up to pro ball," said Marty Stewart, host of Gateway Baseball on SW Illinois College's television station.

"You know, I think I can handle it. The crowds are something I thrive on," Hanley said.

Hanley signed a standard one-year deal for J$1.175 million or $19,881.56 for the season. "We pay our players in Jamaican dollars to give them the feel of being real millionaires. Because even though we don't have millions to pay them, we want them to feel like they're worth a million bucks", said Dan Burton, owner of the Snappers.

All league teams in the Continental League use Jamaican Dollars to pay their players, thus making most of all the players "millionaires", but most hold second jobs in the off-season to make ends meet.

"The way I see it, I'd rather do this than flip burgers," said Hanley about the pay in the league. "I get to play the game I love and pursue the dream of going to the majors someday. Look at those guys who got signed recently (referring to the three CL players signed by major league clubs), they are the standard bearers. I'd love to follow in their footsteps someday," he said.

The Continental League 124-game season begins March 16th.

NORTH VIRGINIA SNAGS PHENOM

NORTH VIRGINIA - The North Virginia Lancers snagged 15-year old phenom Anthony Amon today and assigned him to their taxi squad. "We believe this young man can be a star in the big leagues someday," said Northern Virginia GM Darrell Smith.

Amon, 15, was born in Germany as the child of a US soldier and traveled the world with his father. "I learned baseball in Italy and have played with aborginies in Australia and young boys in Japan. I'm ready to test myself in my home country," he said.

Amon earned his GED so he would be eligible for the signing. "I'm going to prove myself worthy," he said. The club said there was no estimated time when he would be promoted to the big club.

EMERALDS STAR HAUSER DEMANDS TRADE
Oregon Emeralds star Ben Hauser has officially demanded a trade today in the wake of news the club will be seeking to shed payroll.

"Look, the good years have been great ones. But I'm not going to sit around here and watch rebuilding," said Hauser, who becomes a free agent at the end of the season. "It would be best for them and me if I was able to play elsewhere," he said.

New Jersey is reportedly working out a deal to acquire the six-time all-star. Other clubs interested include the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies. "I want to be on a team with a chance to win a title and wherever I can do that, then I hope this all works out," Hauser said at a press conference last week.

KNIGHTS ACQUIRE HAUSER IN FIVE-PLAYER DEAL

HAUSER, RANK HEAD TO NEW JERSEY FOR TWO PROSPECTS
NEW JERSEY - The New Jersey Knights today acquired six-time All-Star and 2007 MVP Ben Hauser, along with Nicholas Rank, the 2004 Cy Young Award winner and also a six-time All-Star from the Oregon Emeralds for two highly rated prospects and 1B Craig Rowland.

"We are thrilled to be able to make this deal and still some really hard working players," said Tom Whitley, Emeralds owner. "We know that those guys are going to go to New Jersey and do a good job. But we feel like we really got a steal here and what a bargain! Just like Amway, we're showed America, now we're going to show baseball!"

The Emeralds have officially begun their pursuit to cut salary, by acquiring SP Kenya Tsuneo, a 23-year old prospect who was among the top rated in baseball. Rowland, 26, is entering his fourth year as a regular player in the majors and has had back-to-back 30 homer/100 RBI seasons in New Jersey. The third player acquired was 3B David Fredericksen, 21, who is an emerging star. He hit 22 homers last season with 89 RBI and should fill a hole left on the Emeralds roster at that position.

Overall, the Emeralds should save over $18 million this season by dumping the salaries of Hauser ($17.5 million) and Rank ($6.6 million), as the other three players combined make less than $3 million, though two will be eligible for arbitration at the end of the year.

Hauser, 30, is expected to sign a long-term deal with New Jersey as a stipulation for accepting the trade to the club, as is Rank. The Emeralds have already signed Rowland to a 4-year extension worth $26 million. "We're not afraid to spend money, we're just going to do it differently," said Whitley.

"I'm glad to be going to closer to home," said Pennsylvania native Hauser, who along with Rank began their careers in Philadelphia. "I just hope this team can bring it together and do what we were able to do with my time in Oregon," he added.
