Openers and Followers Usage
I've noticed this in PT but it need not be specifically a PT issue:
Using a 5 man rotation. 5th starter is designated a follower. 2 relievers have secondary roles as Openers. Checking through the pitching stats I see that my follower has made 5 appearances. Zero starts. Ok. Here's the rub. My 2 openers have a combined 3 starts. So who's made these 2 missing starts? Well, after some checking it looks like when no opener is available the game is starting one of the other 4 starters. I have some starters that have too many starts and all 5 starters are tired. Ah ha. This should NEVER happen. If no opener is available the follower, or "bulk guy" should just make a traditional start. Another starter should never be used as an opener and then asked to start 2 or 3 days after, but it appears that is what is happening. Anybody else seeing this? |

Yes! This has happened to me since launch and while I feel it has gotten better with patches, it still could be better. Whether it's what you were describing, or a pitcher not labeled as "opener" coming in, or the correct follower never coming in, I've had all of these issues to the point where I don't use them that much anymore (maybe a couple times in a full season).
also, what's the deal with openers getting exactly one out sometimes? i've seen that so many times and it frustrates me because that kinda defeats the whole point of using an opener. opener/bulking is a good feature/idea and im glad it's in the game, but i feel like it could be better, we need more strategy options when it comes to them i think |

I tried out using opener/followers but stopped because it didn't work properly. It would lead to the entire rotation (whether starter or follower) being gassed, with a depleted bullpen as well. I don't want to micromanage stamina so I just leave it to conventional which OOTP handles better.

Speaking of bullpen roles, I've found specialist/setup works well for a good lefty pitcher. While specialist/long relief doesn't seem to work (he'll get only a few specialist showings from what I've seen). |

I had to tweak some settings to get the opener pulled after the 1st inning, originally it would have him go 2+ innings and he would give up too many runs.

The follower in question is a sidearm righty, so I like to use a lefty opener to get the opponents vs.L lineup and let my sidearm righty come in and go 5-ish innings that way. When it works properly it's great, but if there's no opener available the AI brain-farts into this using another starter as an opener thing. Frustrating.

The manual says clearly that, if a pitcher in the starting rotation is designated as a follower and no opener is rested when his turn comes around, he starts the game. If that isn't what's happening, it's a bug.
