Post Baseball Down Under - An Australian Story

A Brief History

Baseball was brought to Australia in the 1850s and 1860s during the Victorian Gold Rush. In the early 1890s interstate games where played, mainly between Tasmania, New South Wales, and Victoria. In fact a championship was held in Hobart, Tasmania in 1910 which New South Wales came out on top of. In 1888 Al Spalding, owner of the Chicago White Sox, brought his own team of Americans down under to showcase the game. In 1897 a team of Australian baseball players toured the US and some went on to tour England. While national leagues started in the mid 30s, many did not take off and baseball failed to establish itself as a premier sport. Thus state leagues remained the focus.

The state focus of the leagues made travel easy, regional competition and rivalries grew as well. The Claxton Shield, the national competition, was started in 1934. Each state at the time sent a team to the host city to compete. Over time teams from Western Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory, and even the Australian Capital Territory joined the competition. The last competition took place in 1988 as the Australian Baseball League was introduced. The Claxton Shield took place now as the final series of the competition, as the championship.

The first iteration of the Australian Baseball League ran from 1988 to 1998. With the league running out of money, licenses being purchased, sold, or relocated due to attendance and financial reasons, David Nilsson, a former Brewers player, purchased the league for $5 Million. David Nilsson created the International Baseball League of Australia. The IBLA consisted of state teams, to national teams from Taiwan, International All Stars to MLB All Stars. Finding little success it folded in 2002.Thus the state v state format of the Claxton Shield took place once again. This ran for 7 years from 2003 to 2010. Seeing the Australian National Team win Silver in the 2004 Olympics did signal to Baseball Australia that this was a sport the nation could be successful in and one they could invest in and see results. In turn, Little League springs up in 2007, and the Australian Baseball Federation - commonly referred to as Baseball Australia, begins to see whether than can create a League that goes beyond its current development of players.

Thus in 2010 the Australian Baseball Federation partners with Major League Baseball to form the Australian Baseball League. The ABL is partially owned by the MLB and partially owned by Baseball Australia. The Australian Baseball League started with 5 teams, state teams from Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. Canberra was the last team added in a league that originally was rumored to have up to 10 entrants for its inaugural year.

In 2017 Major League Baseball sold its 50% share in the league. At this time, Ryan Flowers has taken charge of the ABL. After a year of evaluation, and a clear increase in demand both digitally, attendance, and corporate support, Flowers will work with Baseball Australia to expand the game. With this, plans have been announced to expand to the league to 8 teams for 2018-2019 season.

Below are the results form the first 7 years of competition under the six team, MLB backed structure.

Then most recently Brisbane defeated Canberra two games to one to win their third straight Claxton Shield.

And that brings us to the preparation for our current season.

ABL Announces Apparel Partnership

ABL Announces Adidas Partnership

May 8th, 2018
Perth, WA

The ABL today announced a partnership with Adidas and their Global Sport Initiative. The two will work together with Baseball Australia to grow the game of baseball in Australia. Adidas will outfit all ABL teams, players, and coaches including the two new expansion teams that will be announced later this month.

Adidas' apparel deal shows that they are trying to return to the sport. Each teams sideline apparel will also come from the German company. Caps will still be provided by New Era. Adidas deal runs expires in the off season of 2022. Many believe this will subsidize and end jersey partnerships and advertising for the time being, as the contract is rumored to for the Adidas, ABL, and state governing bodies to be the only logos on the uniforms.

Auckland, Christchurch Submit ABL Bids

May 10th, 2018
Auckland, NZ

News out of the North Shore of Auckland, New Zealand, today as Baseball New Zealand announced that they would be submitting two bids to join the Australian Baseball League. The bids are supported three MLB and one Dutch Ownership groups including the Padres, Dodgers, and Diamondbacks, as well as the Dutch Club Neptunus. The two sites are Auckland to represent the North Island, and Christchurch to represent the South Islands interest. Baseball New Zealand is also expected to see Wellington submit a bid of interest if and when a stadium site is finalized.

Baseball New Zealand would help fund stadiums if the bid was to go through, contingent on free to play academies, little league, and adult baseball. The Auckland site is near the North Shore and has a proposed capacity of 3,000 along with 4 practice fields that would be open for community use.

The Christchurch group would likely have a 2,000 stadium with 3 or 4 external fields throughout the city and region for practice and community use. The Christchurch group is expected to embrace a wider spread name in hopes of capturing the whole region.

An inside source with the Melbourne Aces says "Auckland would be a great expansion market to open up the game to. We are expecting some form of foreign entrance into the league, whether is be our neighbors to the East, Korean, or even a Japanese team hosted here in a regional center. "

It is an exciting time to be looking at sport here. Below two of the proposed identities for the teams

Auckland would be looking to embrace a tradition theme for the City of Sails, and still follows a theme of a fierce group identity such as that of Canberra.

Christchurch would make use of its natural fierce animal that roams the region, the red backed spider.

Baseball Australia is expected to announce bids in regions of interest over the next few weeks.

Two Youth Clubs Garner Support

May 11th, 2018
Adelaide, South Australia

Two amateur clubs have announced conditional agreements with investors. Port Adelaide, based out of the Port District of the capital of South Australia boasts multiple senior and junior level premierships. The ownership and management group have reportedly discussed a stadium share agreement with the crosstown and potentially future rivals in the Bite. Port could also utilize the Norwood Oval until they can complete their own Baseball Specific Stadia. Port Adelaide also announced the expansion of their academy teams and women's teams this week.

Geelong on the other hand has announced a partnership with Korean investors and would be potentially hosting an all-Korean team in their first year of operation. Baseball Australia commented that Geelong has a culture for sport, and is an important regional center that will help build regional rivalries with a team like the Aces.

Baseball Australia announced that they have received approximately 7 bids already from various parties. Parties that have publicly released their interest include Auckland, Christchurch, and now the Port District of Adelaide and Geelong.

The organizations bidding for a license would likely look to keep their same branding, as both would offer continuation and a unique look in the league.
