the greatest baseball achievement ever

dude hits 255 doubles in 196 at bats. sure it was in college, but that's still an 'otherworldly' performance.

Only two homers and 53 hits...creative scoring and the embodiment of "gap power".

According to Wiki,

Quote:
255 is a special number in some tasks having to do with computing. This is the maximum value representable by an eight-digit binary number, and therefore the maximum representable by an unsigned 8-bit byte (the most common size of byte, also called an octet), the smallest common variable size used in high level programming languages (bit being smaller, but rarely used for value storage). The range is 0 to 255, which is 256 total values.
And, in case you're interested, and uninformed:

Quote:
255 (two hundred [and] fifty-five, CCLV) is the natural number following 254 and preceding 256.
That, I understand! However, that's ALL I understand:
Quote:
Its factorization makes it a sphenic number. Since 255 = 28 - 1, it is a Mersenne number, and the fourth such number not to be a prime number. It is a perfect totient number, the smallest such number to be neither a power of three nor thrice a prime.

OOTP'ers have dealt with the mysterious number 255 before:

Trying to work this one out - has it come about because he actually hit -1 (negative one) doubles according to the college creation calculation?

well i am reading the dat files directly and it is stored as 255, not -1. the game doesn't store 2B as byte.

Again, the use of 255 suggests a bug. It is STORED as 255 because it rolls over. It can't be STORED as -1.
