Major League Baseball 2020: The Definitive Edition

In lieu of real baseball, I'm going to simulate the 2020 season on a day-by-day basis, reporting on the individual games and story lines that come up, with plenty of screen shots. I won't be running any team, just letting things unfold.

Settings are generally just out-of-the-box, though injuries are set to realistic modern day.

Feel free to chime in if there's anything you want to hear about.

preseason predictions

There was one trade the day before the season started: the Miami Marlins sent catcher Francisco Cervelli to the Houston Astros for pitcher Josh James and a minor leaguer.

The Astros were predicted to win an AL-best 101 games. The Dodgers were predicted to win 105 games to pace the NL. In this world, Noah Syndergaard is not injured and predicted to be the best pitcher in baseball.

Wander Franco was selected the top prospect in baseball.

March 26 (opening day)

Games:

Tigers 3, Indians 0. Shane Bieber pitched an Opening Day shutout for Cleveland, striking out seven and allowing just four hits. Francisco Lindor homered and reached base three times.

White Sox 8, Royals 7. A see-saw affair that four lead changes and six home runs. The Royals took the lead into the ninth, but closer Ian Kennedy allowed the tying run to score with a wild pitch. A sac fly off the bat of Edwin Encarnacion gave the White Sox the win. Eloy Jimenez was the star of the game, with two walks and two hits, including a homer.

Yankees 15, Orioles 8. The Yankees bludgeoned the O's with 20 hits, including four off the bat of Mike Tauchman. Gerrit Cole pitched six innings and allowed three runs in his Yankees debut. Jose Rondon came in as a pinch hitter for the Orioles during the blowout and hit two home runs.

Red Sox 12, Blue Jays 6. The Sox knocked out new Blue Jays ace in the third inning, scoring 10 runs in the first four frames. Seven different Red Sox had at least two hits.

Twins 9, Athletics 3. Josh Donaldson led his new team to victory with three hits, including a home run. Kenta Maeda struck out nine to get the win.

Rangers 2, Mariners 0. Corey Kluber pitched a four-hit shutout win his Rangers' debut. Marco Gonzales allowed only one run himself, a homer off the bat of Rougned Odor, but that was enough for Texas.

Rays 5, Pirates 1. Former Pirate Charlie Morton outdueled former Ray Chris Archer in this one, as Morton went the distance, allowing just one run. The Rays hit three home runs in the win.

Angels 4, Astros 2. The Astros were defeated in their first game after they were busted for the "banging scheme." Shohei Ohtani pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed a single run. The crowd was mostly supportive, but there were a fair number of boos even at Minute Maid Park.

Mets 8, Nationals 2. The Nats dropped their first game after winning the World Series last season. Jacob DeGrom outdueled Max Scherzer for the win.

Cubs 12, Brewers 1. The Cubs pummeled Milwaukee behind seven solid innings from Yu Darvish. Javy Baez, Kyle Schwarber and Albert Almora each had three hits.

Reds 5, Cardinals 3. Nick Castellanos hit a three-run homer in the first inning, and Sonny Gray provided 6 2/3 solid innings. Jack Flaherty struck out nine in five innings in the loss.

Phillies 2, Marlins 1. Aaron Nola was electric, striking out 11 in 7 2/3 innings. Rhys Hoskins hit a two-run homer in the first inning, which proved to be enough. Hector Neris nailed down the save.

Dodgers 10, Giants 4. Mookie Betts had three hits in his Dodgers debut as Los Angeles rolled to the win. Walker Buehler struck out en route to the win.

Padres 6, Rockies 5 (14 innings). The best game of Opening Day. The Padres jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind home runs from Trent Grisham and Austin Hedges in the fourth inning. Tony Wolters knotted the score at 5 with a home run in the eighth. The bullpens held steady for the next five innings before Tommy Pham hit a walk-off home run off Jake McGee in the fourteenth inning.

News:

I missed a story about a wayward cat becoming the new "meow-scot" of the Oakland Athletics after their win yesterday.

Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez was suspended for two games after an altercation with an ump.

Scores:

Indians 4, Tigers 1. Aaron Civale allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings to get the win. Carlos Santana homered for the Tribe.

Royals 7, White Sox 6. The Sox scored three runs in the ninth off an Edwin Encarnacion home run, but couldn't quite get the last run they needed. Jorge Soler also had a three-run homer and drove in four total. Dallas Keuchel was knocked out with an injury after two innings.

Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 3. Jonathan Lucroy drove in the go-ahead run with a sac fly in the ninth, and Matt Barnes locked things down a save for the Sox third win in a row. Bo Bichette had tied the score in the eighth with a two-run homer.

Yankees 5, Orioles 4. Gio Urshela hit a three-run homer to pace the offense. John Means pitched well in the loss, but Masahiro got the win for the Yanks.

Twins 12, Athletics 1. Jake Odorizzi went the distance, allowing one run and striking out nine. Eddie Rosario had four hits for the Twins, and Byron Buxton and Josh Donaldson both homered.

Astros 5, Angels 4. You would think two home runs apiece for Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani would add up to an Angels win- it did not. Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Yuli Gurriel all homered for the Astros to lead them to the win.

Rangers 8, Mariners 1. The Rangers put up all eight runs in the fifth inning to move to 3-0 on the season. Danny Santana homered and scored twice in the big inning. The Rangers managed to lose three pitchers to injury in the game (Mike Minor, Luke Farrell, Brett Martin) but still allowed just one run to the hapless Seattle offense.

Reds 4, Cardinals 3 (10 innings). Mike Moustakas had a walk-off double in the tenth. Dexter Fowler had two home runs in a losing cause.

Nationals 10, Mets 1. Victor Robles hit two home runs as the Nationals rolled. Noah "My Arm is Fine" Syndergaard took the loss for the Mets. Stars Stephen Strasburg and Robinson Cano both suffered injuries in the game.

Marlins 5, Phillies 0. Jose Urena pitched seven shutout innings for Miami. Miguel Rojas had three hits to pace the offense.

Cubs 9, Brewers 5. Kris Bryant drove in four to lead the Cubs to the victory. Justin Smoak homered twice, continuing the trend of two-homer games coming up short for the day.

Diamondbacks 2, Braves 1. Ketel Marte doubled to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Arizona won its third game. Relievers Kevin Ginkel, Andrew Chafin and Archie Bradley all threw shutout innings to close things out.

Rangers 5, Mariners 4. Texas kept its perfect record alive with the win. The Mariners loaded the bases in the eighth and threatened again in the ninth but did not score in either frame. Joey Gallo, Todd Frazier, Robinson Chirinos and Shin-Soo Choo all homered in the win.

I live in Savannah now(Braves country), moving from outside of Philly, and as a die hard Phillies fan, love seeing the Braves at the bottom. 2-9, now, gotta love it.
