2015 SGBL Amateur Draft Review: Darren Glimpse selected #1 overall

Dominic Fry, GSN correspondant
June 6th, 2015

With the league now at the half-way point of the season and with the All-Star Game festivities in full swing, some of the teams' personnel were not in Nemessey over the weekend, but rather back at the Shackleton Convention Centre in Grytviken for the other, lesser-known current league event : the 2015 SGBL Amateur Draft.

With no previous season to determine the draft order, an unusual quirk of this year's draft was it's unpredictability : the selection order would only be determined on the morning of the draft, based on the reverse of the current league standings.

The Draft order looks like this :

1. Batallion
2. Port Charles
3. Husvik Valley
4. Port Smith
5. Grytviken
6. Salvesen
7. Johanssen
8. Barrington
9. Gold Harbour
10. Pajt-Vorten
11. Annenkov
12. Nemessey

Note : the draft consists of 10 rounds.

"Some people will find flaws with any draft format, but this obviously suits us just fine, since we get to pick first!", said Carl Phillips, Director of Scouting for the Batallion Royals, with a chuckle.

"We already know who we want, and we have the luxury to know that he will be available", he added.

#1 - Batallion Royals

Pick : LF Darren Glimpse
18 years old
Northside High School

With hundreds of players available from both the High School and College levels, the Batallion Royals decided to draft to specifically fill a glaring hole in their depth chart ... in Left Field. Up to this point in the season, the entire Batallion/AAA Tvor organization has only had two players with any significant experience playing the position. Les Burnley is the starter on the Royals roster, but is struggling with a sub-.200 batting average, and Atila Degracia has been starting for the AAA Gold Sox. A fresh face (or any face!) was desperately needed.

Partly because of this, the Batallion Royals selected LF Darren Glimpse with the #1 overall pick. A recent graduate of Northside High School, he is a very competent contact hitter, and has the plus side of having remarkable power as well. In his only season in the newly-sanctioned High School league, he held a .360 batting average, and hit 12 home runs despite only appearing in 30 games. Along with his upsides, there are, of course, a few things for him to work on ... mainly his speed and base running. This sluggishness also limits him defensively when hard-to-reach balls are hit towards him.

#2 - Port Charles Bandits

Pick : CF Jørgen Andreasen
18 years old
Bayside High School

"We were absolutely thrilled that Jørgen was available at #2. He was our guy!" That was the reaction of Port Charles GM Andy Gasbarro, when asked by the media if he was happy with his selection.

Who could blame him? CF Jørgen Andreasen was one of the favorites to be selected at the top of the draft. He can hit both for contact and with power, he is a speedy runner, is solid defensively, patient at the plate for his age, and can play anywhere in the outfield very comfortably. His .394 batting average was 2nd-highest by a Senior in the entire South Georgia High School system for 2015.

Andreasen has been sent to the AAA Gregory Station Greys, where he will get his first taste of top flight baseball.

#3 - Husvik Valley Spartans

Pick : LF Daryl Crawford
19 years old
Salvesen Regional

Power, power, power.

That is what Husvik Valley has been missing, and that is what LF Daryl Crawford seems to be willing to deliver. The towering 6'4 outfielder still needs to build up a bit of muscle, but he has a natural gift for hitting baseballs a long way. GM Mick Brady built his club on exactly the opposite philosophy; small ball and quick runners, but on more than a few occasions, the lack of a capable slugger in the lineup prevented the team from really packing that final punch and drive in their baserunners. Men left on base has been an all-too-familiar problem for the team.

Here are the other first-round selections :

4. Port Smith - 3B Tyler Seymour - Great defensive 3B with tons of power.
5. Grytviken - P Aiden Sanderson - Laser-precise pitcher with long list of pitches.
6. Salvesen - 1B Ruben Bruskotter - only High School Senior to bat over .400
7. Johanssen - CF Ayyad Mittman - Great outfielder + contact hitter, extremely quick runner.
8. Barrington - P Ryosaku Sanjo - Hard-throwing left-hander.
9. Gold Harbour - SS Trent Cranor - 20 HR in 50 games in College, highest-drafted College player.
10. Pajt-Vorten - P Seda Rayo - Can throw some nasty sliders and fastballs.
11. Annenkov - CL Miles McCottrell - Looking for career as a Closer, best pitcher out of College ball.
12. Nemessey - 3B Jason Gregory - Great well-rounded player. Can do everything well.

Gold Harbour on hot streak in freezing conditions

SGBL teams played in icy and cold conditions last night

Walt Vergeer, GSN correspondant
June 13th, 2015

As winter arrives in the southern hemisphere, teams across the league got their first proper taste of the mid-season chill, as temperatures dipped below freezing for the first time this year. Thankfully, the cold season is relatively short on South Georgia Island, and should return to spring-like weather my late-July.

The game in Gold Harbour was the coldest of the six played yesterday, with an evening temperature of only 16° F (or -9° C) and a light dusting of snow mid-game.

Not surprisingly, it was even colder in Salvesen, registering only 12° F (or -11° C), but the Aeros were playing on the road in Batallion.

Despite the conditions, pitcher Ken Arnold was sensational for the Gold Harbour Bobcats in his team's 2-1 triumph over the Barrington Pintails. Arnold, who's record is now 9-4, received player of the game honors, while picking up the win. He tossed 7.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while walking only 2 batters.

Ken Arnold

Clive Hawes also played a key role in the win. The Gold Harbour catcher hammered a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, to generate some of the very limited offense in this game.

Gold Harbour has now reeled off 7 straight wins.

Meanwhile, the Barrington Pintails struggled to generate offense all game. Their only run came in the 3rd inning, as Ken Arnold allowed his only two walks back-to-back, then Durukan Begum drove in third baseman Patrick Pot.

Despite the loss, Barrington pitcher Beau Lynch also had a solid game, as he went the distance, allowing only 5 hits and 2 runs. Both runs allowed were home runs ... highlighting that it was generally the only solid option to generate runs in the icy and snowy conditions. Agressive baserunning was kept to a minimum. No steals were registered in this game.

Asked whether the Bobcats can maintain the momentum and stay in a playoff spot, Hawes said "It all depends on which version of our team shows up. When we put it all together, I think we're a great team."

Final Score : Barrington 1, Gold Harbour 2

Hit streak for Steve McCarthy reaches 20 games

Jamie Ragnarsson, Pajt-Vorten Daily News
June 15th, 2015

The number just keeps getting higher and higher.

Comets center fielder Steve McCarthy has now extended his hitting streak to a remarkable 20 games. He did it with 2 hits, one of them a home run, in the 10-7 Comets win over Port Charles at the Municipal Stadium last night.

The man
McCarthy has been part of P.V.'s fast-paced, run-scoring machine this season. The Comets have been overwhelming teams with their offensive power and their ability to hit just about anything all season. As for McCarthy, he has certainly been a piece of that puzzle. He is one of the many players from the UK and Ireland that are making their presence felt in this new league. A native of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, he did what most good baseball players did in Europe at the time : moved to Amsterdam to play in the Dutch league, and becoming a star with UVV Utrecht.

At the beginning of the year, he was selected in the 10th round, 116th overall, by Pajt-Vorten in the inaugural draft, and signed a 1-year contract worth $42,000. McCarthy, who is single and known around the team as somewhat of a minimalist, was one of the first players to arrive on the island ... barely 48 hours after being selected. The entirety of his possessions were in two modest suitcases. "I'm sure I'll find the rest of what I need here", he joked, talking to the Daily News in January. "I barely had to get rid of anything. I had perhaps the emptiest apartment in Amsterdam!"

The streak
McCarthy's streak started on May 21st, going 2-for-4 in a win in Nemessey. After a week, it looked like the streak might come to an end. In a game in Johanssen on May 28th, he was hit by a pitch and had to leave the game. Since it was in his first at-bat, however, this technically preserved the streak. The next day, despite a heavy bruise on his forearm, he managed a hit against the same Johanssen Suns to keep the streak going.

McCarthy was selected to the All-Star Game on June 7th, representing the South Division. Despite being one of the few players on the team who was not replaced at any point in the game, he still went 0-for-4. It didn't matter, of course, since the game doesn't count towards hit streaks. Hitting in 20 straight games places McCarthy 3 hits away from the SGBL record, set only a month ago by Irishman Angus McDaniel of Batallion.

During the run, McCarthy's batting average jumped from .291 to .324.

Last night
McCarthy had a very productive game last night. He grounded out in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off Jesus de Leon in the 5th, grounded out in the 6th and flied out in the 8th.

To date this year McCarthy has the third-most RBI on the Comets (37), the second-best batting average (.324, behind only Robert Halford), and is equal-second in team home runs (10).

The Comets are back in action tonight, on the road to face the Barrington Pintails at 7pm.

McCarthy's hit streak ends at 20, but Pintails lose 5-2

Shane Yarborough, Barrington Times
June 16th, 2015

A difficult first inning for pitcher Walt Trzepizur was eventually too much for the Pintails to overcome, as they lost 5-2 to the Pajt-Vorten Comets today at Invescor Pintails Stadium.

Facing a 3-0 deficit in the first inning, the Pintails struggled to gain momentum all game, and couldn't produce the runs needed to catch up. In the fifth, Alan Bearcroft of the Comets smashed a 2-run home run to make the lead 5-1, and that was more than enough to seal the win. One of the only bright lights offensively for the Pintails was left fielder Zu Nicoll, who went 4-for-4 with an RBI.

In the other dugout, there was also disappointment, as Steve McCarthy's 20-game hitting streak was snapped. He was only 3 games away from equaling the league record of 23, set a month ago by Batallion's Angus McDaniel.

The big center fielder from Northern Ireland failed to get a hit in 4 at-bats in the game, but Pajt-Vorten came out the winner, which, to his teammates, is more important to him. Speaking to the Times after the game, teammate Alan Bearcroft commented "The streak was not necessarily as big a deal to Steve. He's not that type of bloke. He just wants to help the team win games, full stop."

Currently McCarthy is batting .318 with 78 hits and 10 home runs. He has knocked in 37 runs and scored 37 times.

The second game of this series is scheduled for tomorrow evening at 7:05pm. Barrington sits third in the South Division, with an even 33-33 record. Pajt-Vorten sit just above them in second place and in a playoff spot at the moment, at 37-30.

Frederick Seong (6-3) is scheduled to start for the Pintails. Cam Lambert (4-1) will be on the mound for the Comets.

A Long-overdue first win for Bailey Williams!

One of AAA's stars finally broke into the big league win column!

Walt Vergeer, GSN correspondant
June 20th, 2015

Bailey, Bailey, Bailey!!!

It's not always easy to break into the major leagues, and Grytviken prospect Bailey Williams showed just how hard it can be to break into the big time when the big spotlight is shining on you.

Despite a horrid start to his SGBL career, where he walked around with a 13.00+ ERA for over a month and was grilled by the media for under-performing on a big-time team .... the youngster finally got his rhythm back, going 6-1 and a 2.15 ERA in the minors. He finally got his shot again in the majors this week and got it done against cross-town rivals Husvik Valley last night in the bigs! By no means was this game an easy victory, as the Spartans threw it into high gear from the very first pitch.

With the game's opening pitch, Elias Eriksen hit a single to start the game. After 2 innings and a few more hits, Grytviken was once again down 1-0.

But, this time, Williams took no prisoners, and threw with a focus and funneled rage that no one saw before. At this point, this was personal.

Unlike previous games, Williams kept the game in check during the middle innings. In the bottom of the 5th, Fred Bjerg and Sam Birks of the Icebergs would hammer hits against Spartans starter Ben Beveridge and the Icebergs would eventually lead 2-1.

During the following two innings, Spartans Manager Bud Kahil kept Beveridge in the game, but his performance only worsened.. as he spit out hit after hit, and the Icebergs took the lead 6-1.

This was enough for the young Williams. He was eventually replaced by reliever Tarald Nielsen in late innings, but it was all the same. Bailey Williams recorded his first win, in a 6-2 match against the guys from down in the valley.

Finally ... he could celebrate.

Final Score : Husvik Valley 2, Grytviken 6

South Georgia Baseball League - July Review

Gold Harbour went into freefall in July, one of the many storylines in the SGBL

Walt Vergeer, GSN correspondant
August 1st, 2015

The South Georgia Baseball League is now entering August, and the last few days of the season. As warmer temperatures begin to creep back into the southern hemisphere and particularly our island, action is also heating up on the field. With only 19 days left in the 126-game regular season, here are some of the storylines currently developing.

Nemessey's continuing dominance

The North Division has been spreading out considerably over the past few months, with now a 30-win gap between Nemessey at the top, and Batallion at the bottom.

The Nemessey Giants seem to be unstoppable, winning a league-best 18 games in July, and now sit comfortably ahead of Salvesen. The team has league-leading pitching, and the #2 offense in the league. Even the injury bug has been kind to the Giants, who sat injury-free for a time in mid-July.

However, things looked like it would turn for the worse soon after.

On July 22nd, their 37-year-old closer Snake Olesen ended his season with shoulder inflammation. Olesen, who was leading the league at the time with 25 saves, would be a difficult man to replace on the roster. However, 28-year-old Stuart Ward has taken over closing duties and has done a respectable job.

Snake Olesen

One week later, their starting C Moriz Zasypkin fractured a finger during a game. Just yesterday, the team has picked up catcher Cameron Radley to take Zasypkin's place. Radley had appeared in 15 games for Grytviken earlier in the season, before being released at the end of June. There is still a chance that Zasypkin could be back late in the playoffs, depending on how the season shakes out for Nemessey. He should be healthy by the beginning of September.

The July collapse of the Gold Harbour Bobcats

In a previous article from early-May, it was mentioned that Gold Harbour were nor bad, nor good. They were the most average team in the league. Mid-range in almost every statistical category. However, in July, a combination of injuries, their offense sputtering, pitching going in a slump, and their big weakness of slow, lumbering baserunning meant the Bobcats lost 21 of their 28 games during the month. The worst stretch came just over a week ago, when they were swept in back-to-back series by Salvesen, and last-placed Batallion. In that 6-game stretch, the Bobcats were outscored 54-26. Then, just last night, the Bobcats finished a forgettable July by being hammered 10-0 by Nemessey.

The 3-way playoff fight in the South

Unlike the extremes of the North Division, the South Division has remained very compact and competitive. In the last few weeks of the season, there are three teams battling for two playoff spots : Annenkov (65-44), Pajt-Vorten (60-49) and Johannsen (56-53).

The Annenkov Vikings have the league's top bullpen and great pitching overall, while the Pajt-Vorten Comets pack the league's top offense. Despite being miles behind those two teams in almost every major team statistic, the Johanssen Suns have hung onto some playoff aspirations. One reason for their competitiveness is their fantastic 1-2 punch in the starting rotation, Aguo Grangeman and Ryan Gibb, who combine for 26 wins in their 49 starts. The other reason for their success has been the stellar play by the league's #1 overall pick in the Inaugural Draft, Patryk Kostiuk!

However, time is running out for the Suns to make it into the playoffs. It's still realistic, but they will need to make up some ground, and quick!

Here are the standings after July 31st

Annenkov punches playoff ticket, Nemessey clinches Division

Karl Peters, GSN correspondant
August 10th, 2015

Today, the playoff picture in South Georgia got just a little bit clearer.

Annenkov Vikings (70-49)

With their 8-6 win over the Barrington Pintails in extra innings last night, the Annenkov Vikings have officially claimed a spot in this year's postseason. "I couldn't be prouder of this team," said skipper Mug Roessing. "These guys worked their tails off all season long, so they've definitely earned this.

However, the Vikings manager says he won't let his team rest on their laurels. "We've still got a long way to go to reach our ultimate goal and that's an Antarctic Trophy. So we're gonna celebrate and just let this all sink in tonight, but it's back to work tomorrow."

Nemessey Giants (76-43)

Meanwhile, the Nemessey Giants clinched home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs by being guaranteed first place in the North Division.

Members of the team say winning the North Division title is special, but ultimately they will only be remembered with a championship season. "We want to put ourselves in the history books and win that league trophy" said starting pitcher Orlando Juarez. "We all believe it can happen, it's just a matter of putting in the hard work and getting the breaks."

The club is now aiming to reach the South Georgia Final Series, and capture the first ever Antarctic Trophy.

"To see the team get here, it makes you believe in yourself and all the systems you've put in place," said manager Jacob Shannon.

Playoff Picture

With just over a week, and 7 games to go, here is the playoff breakdown.

Although seven teams are mathematically still in the fight, Port Smith, Barrington, Port Charles and Gold Harbour are all 7 games out with as many games to play. Within the next 24-48 hours, they could all be eliminated.

This leaves Salvesen as the only realistic option to claim the second playoff spot in the North Division. One more win or one more Bobcats loss guarantees them a playoff spot, and a date with Nemessey in the first round.

Salvesen is currently in Port Charles, having dropped the first two games of the series to the Bandits 14-3 and 3-2. The third matchup will be tomorrow night, August 11th.

In the South Division, Pajt-Vorten has been in free fall, losing 5 of their last 6 games, and is now only leading Johannsen by 3 games for the second playoff spot. The two teams are currently in a crucial series against each other, which could swing the playoff picture dramatically one way or the other.

Johanssen and Pajt-Vorten have each won a game in their head-to-head series. The third and final game will be played tomorrow.

Stay tuned to GSN for more updates, as the SGBL Regular Season comes to a close, and the playoffs arrive!

2015 Regular Season concludes, 4 teams reach post-season

Municipal Stadium in Pajt-Vorten. One of 4 parks that will host post-season baseball.

Dominic Fry, GSN correspondant
August 19th, 2015

Games played yesterday, August 18th, marked the end of the first ever South Georgia Baseball League regular season ... and what a season it was! Here is a look at some of the things we followed over the course of the last 8 months :

Playoff-bound teams

Nemessey, Salvesen, Annenkov and Pajt-Vorten

To begin, let's take a look at the 4 teams that will contest the 2015 SGBL Post-Season.

In the North Division, Salvesen and Nemessey were the only teams to lead the division over the course of the season. Salvesen had the initial edge, thanks to a flurry of offense, but by early-May, Nemessey caught them, began to pull away, and never looked back. The Giants eventually finished an incredible 11 games ahead of their upcoming Division Series opponents, and finished with the best record in the league.

In the South Division, things were much tighter. Even though Annenkov led the division for the better part of the season, fans were glued to their televisions and radios all summer, as three teams; Johanssen, Pajt-Vorten and Barrington, fought tooth-and-nail for that second playoff spot. Eventually, the Comets were able to edge the Suns and qualify with a few days to go in the season.

Batallion's managerial chaos

Every manager's personality can be different, but there was no doubt which manager made the most headlines in 2015. With his team off to a dismal 5-21 start, Batallion Royals skipper Magnus Hansen spent the bulk of the regular season in the media spotlight. From openly blasting his team's performance after games, to then blasting the media for being too critical of his team, there was never a dull moment at Royals games. If he wasn't talking to the media or players, he was giving the umps a piece of his mind as well. It was like witnessing a man with Earl Weaver's temperament, but without most of his legendary leadership qualities.

Somehow, his Royals gradually improved, and finished with a quasi-respectable 53-73 record, which was just enough to avoid the North Division basement, and the latest rumor is that he might have done just enough to avoid his firing. We will see.

Hobbs' masterful pitching

It did not take long to notice that the best pitcher on South Georgia is Irish left-hander Lonergan Hobbs. He was selected #2 in the Inaugural Draft, and quickly established himself as a force in the league.

Despite being on a somewhat weak Port Smith Aces team, Hobbs was brilliant in most of his 26 starts for them. In fact, his month of May was something to behold : going 4-1 with a 0.72 ERA.

His best game was no doubt on April 13th against Batallion, when he pitched an impressive 11 innings, keeping the game scoreless. Unfortunately for him, in the 12th, he would allow the hit that would eventually win the game for the Royals. Still, it has gone down as the best pitching performance in the SGBL so far.

Here are his end-of-season statistics :

The hitting of Robert Halford

Englishman Robert Halford was newsworthy during April and May for his incredible start to the season. The man eventually nicknamed "The Hitting Brit" held a .418 batting average at the conclusion of the first month of play. The chase for a 400 average was short lived, however, as a few injuries and subsequent struggles dropped his batting average.

Sporting a lower, but still league-leading .388 average by the All-Star Game, Halford, who was injured at the time, was controversially left off the All-Star roster, causing a minor protest in Pajt-Vorten and on social media.

Still, Halford finished the season as South Georgia League batting champion, at .357

Here are his season statistics :

Spartans' fall to the basement of the North Division

One team that started well was the Husvik Valley Spartans. After a month, the team was knocking on the door of a playoff spot in the North Division, owing to some heartstopping one-run games and come-from-behind wins. However, the team had a noticeable lack of offensive power and only average pitching. As the season ran through the meat of it's schedule in May, June and July, the Spartans slipped further and further back.

The team tried to patch up the roster during June and July by trading away a half-dozen prospects for closer Jared Rosencutter and starter Michael Cox. However, the team was never able to broker a deal to fix their power issue, and the team eventually sank to last place in the division. They finished the season at 50-76.

---

Now that we have looked back at the regular season, stay tuned as we give a full review of SGBL player statistics for 2015, as well as an in-depth preview article for the two Division Championship Series!

SGBL Championship Trophy gets a name!

SGBL players will be trying to win the 'Antarctic Cup'

Walt Vergeer, GSN correspondant
August 20th, 2015

There had been a buzz in the air around the island for the last few weeks. In June, the South Georgia Baseball League unveiled the design of what would be the league's championship trophy. At the time, no name for the trophy was announced.

Baseball fans nation-wide began speculating about what the eventual name of the trophy would be. Some were convinced the league would give it a corporate name, such as the 'Graham Fuels Trophy presented by Zinasco', or the 'Watson Insurance Cup'. "I can't see why they would pass up a chance to cash in on a sponsorship deal!" said one unnamed fan. Others theorized that it wouldn't have an actual name at all, at least not in the short-term. "Perhaps it won't be named anything for a while until they can name it after someone? It's an idea, but they might have to wait a while for that to become feasible" said another fan, with a chuckle.

All the speculation was put aside last night, as the SGBL announced that the league's trophy will be named simply the "Antarctic Cup".

League Commissioner Keith Unger

Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Grytviken, SGBL Commissioner Keith Unger explained why the league decided against a sponsor-related name :

"Of course we considered the idea of finding a corporate partner for the naming of the Cup, but in the end we decided against it. We want the trophy's name to be permanent, and to stand the test of time. We hope it will become a symbol of our league and of South Georgia in general. We want children and youth to aspire to play in our league, and to lift the trophy as Antarctic Cup champion!"

The naming of the trophy arrives just in time, as the SGBL playoffs are set to kick off tomorrow night. In the North Division Series, the Nemessey Giants prepare to host the Salvesen Aeros. In the South Division Series, the Pajt-Vorten Comets visit the Annenkov Vikings. Both series are a 'best-of-7' format, and both opening games are scheduled for 7:05pm.

Playoffs are here! - Division Series Review

Pajt-Vorten Comets pitcher Kev Blandin

Walt Vergeer, GSN correspondant
August 29th, 2015

The playoffs have arrived!

Now that each team has played their 126 regular season games, the top two teams from the North and South divisions moved on to the post-season. In the first round, division rivals played each other in the best-of-7 "Division Series". Following this, each Division champion will face off in the first ever Antarctic Cup Finals!

Here is a review of how the two playoff series went :

North Division Series

Nemessey Giants (80-46) vs Salvesen Aeros (69-57)

The series that had the higher chance of becoming lopsided was certainly the Nemessey/Salvesen matchup.

Nemessey
Over the course of this inaugural SGBL season, Nemessey developed into a powerhouse. The team's pitching staff, in particular the starting rotation, have been nearly unhittable all season. Their 3.32 combined ERA was the best in the league. In fact, four of the team's starters (Juarez, Blythe, Houlton and Lloyd) were selected as All-Stars in June. Their offense is led by hard-hitting 2B Pogo Kushel, who led the team with 27 HR. Their enigmatic 1B Mick Shaw is an anomaly for a first baseman. Instead of the usual power hitter, Shaw is instead a speedster; he leads the team with 23 stolen bases, and has batted .348 for the season.

Salvesen
Unlike the Giants' balanced approach to baseball, the Salvesen Aeros are, instead, all-offense. The team slugged their way to a league-leading 152 home runs (7 of 9 starters have 10+ homers in the season). The team is littered with hard-hitting players, such as 1B John Madsen, LF Meto Christiansen and their superstar catcher Coy Blazer, who lead the team in home runs (29) and RBI (83) in only 109 games.

Series Review
The series started in Nemessey, and the opposing Aeros went direct for the kill in the top of the 1st. Nemessey allowed a walk, 3 hits and 2 runs to chase Nemessey starter Orlando Juarez off the mound in the first inning. However, the Giants replied in the bottom of the 1st to tie it 2-2, then never looked back. The Giants then kept up a constant stream of hits and runs for the rest of the game, eventually overpowering the Aeros 8-4.

With their best chance at momentum behind them, the Salvesen Aeros completely unraveled in the next two games, being first blown out 14-4, then absolutely hammered at home 21-2 in game three.

In game four, it remained a close 1-1 matchup until extra innings, when Nemessey's star shortstop Gabriel Ramme drove in the winning run in the top of the 10th, to win 2-1 and sweep the series.

Nemessey's first baseman Mick Shaw was once again the star of the series, hitting .500, driving in 9 RBI, and stealing 3 bases. He was named North Division Series MVP.

Game scores :

Salvesen 4, Nemessey 8
Salvesen 4, Nemessey 14
Nemessey 21, Salvesen 2
Nemessey 2, Salvesen 1 (10 innings)

The Nemessey Giants defeat the Salvesen Aeros, 4 games to 0.

South Division Series

Annenkov Vikings (74-52) vs Pajt-Vorten Comets (68-58)

Entering the post-season, the Annenkov/Pajt-Vorten matchup was expected to be a very interesting one.

Annenkov
The town of Annenkov looked to have a solid team from the beginning. After a few weeks fighting against a few teams to trade top spot in the divison, the Vikings jumped in front in late-April and never looked back. Much like Nemessey, the Annenkov Vikings have both pitching and offensive threats. A lot of the team's offense comes from the one-two punch of LF Bear Kent and DH Ryan Wormald, batting 3rd/4th. In fact, 33-year-old Wormald is particularly dangerous, as he led the league in home runs with 38, and Kent was not far behind with 29. Their pitching isn't half-bad either, as they have two solid starters in Kozdras and Grondahl. Their closer, Doyle Lagala, led the league with 27 saves.

Pajt-Vorten
The Comets had an uphill fight just to get to this moment. A very offensively-minded team, Pajt-Vorten had all the talent to get into the post-season... however, they simply did not have access to those players for the entire season. They have the wonderful "Hitting Brit" Robert Halford, who flirted with a .400 average early in the season, before injuries and setbacks handed him a still-impressive .357 average at the end of the season. At the same time, with games dwindling down, they fought to fend off the challenges of Barrington and Johanssen to get to the playoffs while also fighting injuries. As they entered this playoff series, the team isn't at it's best. They are currently without starters SS Jose Cervantes, 1B Pelle Nommensen, and C Damon Cartwright. Somehow, despite the adversity, they punched their ticket to the big dance, even with the worst record of the four qualified teams.

Series Review
In game one, Annenkov had a great complete game pitching performance from star starter Cuarto Grondahl, but still lost the game 3-2. Anennkov then replied with 5 runs in the 5th of game two, to tie the series.

The teams then traded wins in game three (4-2 Vikings win), and game four (7-4 Comets win). In game five, it was expected to be a pitching duel between solid starters Grondahl (ANK) and Lambert (PV). Instead, it was a slugfest and neither pitcher lasted beyond the 4th inning. Annenkov eventually won, 10-8.

With Annenkov leading the series 3-to-2, the pressure was on for Pajt-Vorten. However, they limited Annenkov to only one solitary run between games six and seven, and managed to claw their way back to snatch the series, 4-to-3.

In game seven, with everything on the line, Pajt-Vorten starter starter Oscar Monuz delivered. He had pitched a complete game in game three, only to lose in a tight game. In this game, Monuz was masterful, limiting the Vikings to only 3 hits and taking the complete game shutout.

True to form, Pajt-Vorten's "Hitting Brit" Halford lit up the scoreboard, with 2 home runs, 7 RBI, and a batting average of .464 . He was named South Division Series MVP.

Game scores :

Pajt-Vorten 3, Annenkov 2
Pajt-Vorten 4, Annenkov 8
Annenkov 4, Pajt-Vorten 2
Annenkov 4, Pajt-Vorten 7
Annenkov 10, Pajt-Vorten 8
Pajt-Vorten 4, Annenkov 1
Pajt-Vorten 1, Annenkov 0

The Pajt-Vorten Comets defeat the Annenkov Vikings, 4 games to 3.

----------

Stay tuned for more coverage, as the first ever SGBL Antarctic Cup Finals will start tomorrow, Sunday August 30th!

Pajt-Vorten will visit Nemessey to kick off the series, slated to start at 8:05pm at Kenney Memorial Park. Pajt-Vorten will have Kev Blandin (13-7, 3.91 ERA) on the mound, while Nemessey will have Orlando Juarez (13-5, 3.06 ERA) to start the game.

Don't miss all the action! Stay tuned to GSN for updates coming up shortly!

Salvesen and Meto's 'laid-back' attitude might have cost them a ticket to the Antarctic Cup

Aeros outfielder Meto Christiansen

Dominic Fry, GSN correspondant
August 30th, 2015

Looking back, it looks like the Salvesen Aeros were a little too loose, during their divisional matchup with Nemessey.

During game 3, Salvesen left fielder Meto Christiansen got in hot water with manager Fredrick Jensen for a series of pranks aimed at other teammates during that series versus Annenkov. "These guys are adults," said the Aeros skipper. "And they're supposed to be professionals. Why Meto is acting like a clown is beyond me." According to Jensen, Christiansen will be fined if the behavior continues. However, Christiansen, doesn't understand why his manager is getting all worked up. "I'm just having a little fun, blowing off some steam. He doesn't need to call me out in public. And fining me would be taking it way too far. It's embarrassing to be singled out like that. I don't know. I guess I need to take things a little more seriously from now."

Game 4 the following day, a game during which Salvesen was swept, Meto apparently didn't learn his lesson.

Just days after their last outburst, Christiansen and Coy Blazer were back at it. This time, Meto was caught screwing his teammate's helmet to his locker. When Coy went to grab it, he ended up ripping the whole locker out of the wall. Manager Fredrick Jensen fined Meto, and was overheard telling him, "You'll pay for the **** repairman to come in and fix this!"

When confronted by the media, Meto was quoted as saying, "I'm sorry that my prank got out of hand. We just came off a tough loss, and I just wanted to lighten the mood."

Despite the negative press, Christiansen was an integral part in Salvesen reaching the playoffs in the first place. He played all 126 games in left-field for the Aeros this season, batting .252, smashing 19 home runs and 79 RBI during that span.

Looks like the pranks were no more than a coping mechanism for an overwhelming match-up, however, as the Salvesen Aeros were swept 4-0 by Nemessey in the South Division Series.

Antarctic Cup - Series Preview

Giants OF Oliver Nielsen, in game 2 of the division series.

Karl Peters, GSN correspondant
August 30th, 2015

Teams competing in the inaugural "Antarctic Cup" Finals

Pajt-Vorten Comets (68-58) vs Nemessey Giants (80-46)

So, it comes down to two.

The long baseball season is now reaching it's crescendo. As the year started, South Georgians didn't have any professional baseball. Then, in January, twelve teams sprouted to life. A few months later, the teams began their journey. After a tough 126-game season, four teams remained. A further series whittled the group down to just two teams .... and they will now face each other in the Antarctic Cup Finals.

Nemessey

Representing the North Division is undoubtedly the most powerful team in the land, the Nemessey Giants.

The nickname "Giants" suit them well : after a thoroughly dominant regular season where they racked up a league-best 80 wins, they looked like giants in the playoffs as well and made quick work of the Salvesen Aeros in the Division Series, out-scoring them 45-11 in a short, lopsided 4-game sweep. Their offense was firing on all cylinders in the series; Shaw, Nielsen, 'Pogo' and Bodenhamer all batted above .400 in the series, and the team had great pitching from nearly every member of the team. The team faced adversity right away with the injury to starter Orlando Juarez in the first inning of the first game, but the bullpen saved the day and the team never looked back. They got solid starts from Blythe, Lloyd and Houlton in the other games, and it was more than enough to push the Giants to the finals.

Overall, the Giants are a great, well-rounded team and will be hard to defeat.

Pajt-Vorten

Representing the South Division is a team that had a slightly tougher time getting here, the Pajt-Vorten Comets.

The offense-heavy Comets have been fighting adversity for the better part of a month already. They had to play 'playoff baseball' in early-August just to get into the playoffs, holding back the Suns and Pintails in the process.

Then, in the Division Series, they faced a powerful Annenkov Vikings squad, and truly gave them a fight. Despite both teams having formidable offensive clout, the deciding game 7 came down to pitching ... Monuz vs Kozdras. The game ended in a 1-0 nail-biter, with Monuz and the Comets on the winning end.

The Comets have the best offense in the league, but Annenkov proved that good pitching can limit them, and the Comets enter the Finals with next to no rest after their long, seven-game division series.

Comets manager Yuri Tambov

However, the adversity doesn't concern Comets manager Yuri Tambov at all. "We fought hard to do well, fought hard to get in the post-season, and fought hard to get in this series", he said, "we're certainly not about to let this fight go. Bring em on! We're ready!"

The Comets are the underdogs in this series, but they do have two statistics working in their favor : they have been ranked #1 in the league this season in runs scored (ahead of even Nemessey, despite having been hampered by injury all season off-and-on), and they won the season series vs. Nemessey; 7 wins to the Giants' 5.

There is a great "David vs Goliath" battle brewing, and stay tuned to GSN tomorrow to find out how the first ever Antarctic Cup Finals shakes out, game by game!
