(#3) Fred Fulton 27-1-1 (23) vs. (#6) Jack Downey 30-3-1 (12)
Downey had a lot of problems with a cut above his right eye. His corner worked it well, but it was a distraction. However, Downey kept taking rounds here and there, and Fulton couldn’t find the kayo he was looking for. I had Downey up by 2 rounds after 11, but Fulton knocked Downey down in the 12th. When Downey got up, Fulton assaulted him again and again. The ref seemed on the verge of stopping the fight, but with only a minute left, he let them go. I had it 114-114 after 12, with Downey looking like a Picasso painting. The refs had it 114-113 Fulton, 115-113 Downey, 113-113 even: a draw.

(#2) Billy Miske 28-0-0 (16) vs. (#7) Luther McCarty 29-1-1 (23)
Miske knocked McCarty down 10 seconds into the bout. McCarty spent the rest of the first on the run, much to the dismay of the crowd, but he escaped the first round. Unfortunately, the second round was waiting for him… and the third… and the fourth. McCarty just wouldn’t go down, and Miske was terrorizing him! Miske got sloppy in the 5th, however, when McCarty threw a blind right and put Miske down for a 9-count, evening the knockdowns at 1 apiece. McCarty was knocked down again in the 7th, and McCarty ran in the 8th. Feeling the desperation, McCarty came out in the 9th. Miske couldn’t repel McCarty’s slugging. McCarty had Miske against the ropes, and the ref stopped the fight in a TKO9 for McCarty. I had Miske up 78-71 through 8 rounds (losing only the 5th when he got knocked down).

Now Dempsey and Miske are both out of the race for World’s Heavyweight Champion (my top 2 picks). Fulton and Downey will have to fight again in June; an 8 round bout.

#1 Wills, #4 Carpentier and #7 McCarty have all reached the semifinals.
Good stuff in the Miske/McCarty bout, always entertaining to see a fighter score a desperation win like that.

In a rematch from their draw in May, Berger came out strong in the first, but Fulton took over and controlled most of the match. Fulton fought through swelling in his left eye, and did enough to win by unanimous decision, 78-74, 79-73, 78-74.

Fulton will continue to the next round of the heavyweight tournament in August to fight Luther McCarty.

Tournament Final Four to be fought in August:

August, 1920 Results

August 14, 1920

(1) Wills 42-0-0 (36) vs. (4) Carpentier 33-3-0 (32)
Wills was all business. He and Carpentier felt each other out in the first couple of rounds, but Wills dropped Carpentier twice in the 3rd round. Unable to capitalize on the damage, Wills allowed Carpentier to climb back in it. In the 5th, Carpentier was cut over his left eye by an accidental head butt. Wills continued to pick off Carpentier round after round (3rd through 8th). Carpentier came out, however, in the 9th, and had Wills on the ropes. The ref looked about to stop the fight, but hesitated long enough for Wills to escape. In the 10th, Carpentier mounted his comeback, dropping Wills for an 8-count. (My favorite TBCB quote: “He’s got Wills on Queer Street.”) At this point I had it 96-93 after 10 rounds. Wills recovered in the 11th round, but at the end of the 12th, Carpentier dropped Wills again. (113-113 after 12.) In the 13th, Wills knocked down Carpentier for a 6-count, and the momentum shifted AGAIN. The 14th went to Carpentier. When the 15th round started, these two looked like they had fought 28 rounds, not 14. Endurance: zip; Wills: swelling of his left eye; Carpentier: swelling of his left eye and closed cut over his left eye. In the 15th, Wills knocked down Carpentier and—you guessed it—Carpentier returned the favor. I had it dead-even after all 15 were completed. The judges saw it differently. Wills remained undefeated, and won on a UD15, 141-137, 140-138, 142-136.

August 21, 1920

(3) Fulton28-2-2 (23) vs. (7) McCarty 31-1-1 (25)
Fulton took the early rounds, but in the 4th, McCarty opened a cut above Fulton’s left eye. Fulton’s corner couldn’t stop the bleeding, and he walked right into an uppercut by McCarty, landing on the canvas. Fulton’s corner really couldn’t stop the bleeding over Fulton’s eye, and he was dropped again in the 9th. The ref stopped the fight, and the doctor gave him the thumbs up to continue. In the 10th, McCarty knocked Fulton down for the 3rd time in the fight. The ref let the fight continue, but McCarty did not, knocking Fulton out on his feet. McCarty won, TKO10.

McCarty will advance to the first World Championship Bout vs. Harry Wills in December.

In 1916, McCarty lost--TKO6--to Tom Kennedy, who is currently ranked #16 in the world.

Yeah; Dempsey is going to have to fight his way back up in the rankings, though, to get a title shot.

Heavyweight Championship Preview

(#1 seed) Harry Wills 42-0-0 (36) vs. (#7) Luther McCarty 31-1-1 (25)
Odds: 3-2 Wills.
They have not fought each other.
Wills last 2 bouts have been unanimous decisions, breaking a string of 4 kayos. Before that bout he had knocked out 15 straight. McCarty has knocked out his last 4 opponents. His only loss came to Tom Kennedy, his draw came to Sam Berger.

No major bouts were scheduled for September, October or November.

Jack Downey got back in the winner’s column with wins in September and October:
Zulu Kid UD12
Bob Devere UD12

Next up… December’s Heavyweight Championship

Fuente World Heavyweight Championship

December 18, 1920

(#1 seed) Harry Wills 43-0-0 (37) vs. (#7) Luther McCarty 31-2-1 (25)
After taking the first round, Wills was in trouble with swelling under both eyes in the 2nd round. Despite the swelling (worse in his left eye), Wills plodded along, and raised some swelling under McCarty’s right eye. Wills seemed to take the 3rd through 6th rounds, before McCarty got one back in the 7th. The swelling in both fighters’ eyes seemed to worsen as the fight went along. Then it was McCarty, in the 9th, whose right eye was about closed, but the ref left them go, as it was a championship bout. I had Wills up 98-92 after 10 rounds. Desperate, in the 12th, McCarty pummeled Wills, but he seemed to have spent all his energy in this round. Early in the 13th, Wills knocked him down. Later in the round, McCarty went out on his feet. A victory for the favorite, Wills, with a TKO13 over Luther McCarty.

Other Main Action:
Charles Horn 33-6-0 (25) TKO11 Tom Cowler 34-8-1 (17)
Fred Fulton 30-2-2 (24) KO1 Joe Beckett 27-8-0 (22)
Georges Carpentier 34-3-0 (32) UD12 Sam Berger 30-8-1 (22)

Records are post-fight.

Good stuff, sounds like it was a brutal fight. Wills could have a long reign.

Maybe a year or so, as Dempsey makes his way back up. Even then, Wills is still the champ and in Prime form. I can't wait to see how this plays out.

Kind of surprised to see Downey with the one seed, I predict a Dempsey/Miske matchup for the belt.

February, 1921

USBA Quarterfinals

February 12, 1921

(8) Dick O’Brien 37-3-0 (32) KO11 (1) Jack Downey 32-4-2 (12)
#1 seed went down. Downey had a solid lead, but got sloppy in the 11th, not giving O’Brien the respect he deserved, and got clocked!

(4) Jack Dempsey 23-1-0 (23) TKO8 (5) Ralph Brooks 25-3-1 (5)
Dempsey was just too much for Brooks.

February 26, 1921

(3) Billy Miske 29-1-0 (16) UD12 (6) Sam Berger 30-9-1 (22)

(7) Bill Brennan 22-3-0 (17) UD12 (2) Luther McCarty 31-3-1 (25)
#2 seed goes down, as McCarty’s world is beginning to fall apart. 2 months ago he was in the World Championship fight. Now, he’s losing in the USBA quarters to an unproven kid.

Harry Wills 43-0-0 (37) vs. Fred Fulton 30-2-2 (24)
In his first title defense, Wills took on mandatory challenger, Fred Fulton. Fulton skipped the USBA tournament for a title shot against Wills. That now seems to be a bad idea, as Wills beat Fulton on a TKO 2:32 into the first round. Fulton didn’t get a punch in.

Wills will move on to fight his choice of top 10 boxers in July. Most of the other top fighters are involved in the EABU and USBA title tournaments.

FBU Top 10 as of March 31, 1921:

Champ: Harry Wills 44-0-0 (38)
1. Georges Carpentier 35-3-0 (33) *in EBU tourney
2. Billy Miske 29-1-0 (16) *in USBA tourney
3. Fred Fulton 30-3-2 (24) *lost title shot in March
4. Jack Dempsey 23-1-0 (23) *in USBA tourney
5. Bill Brennan 22-3-0 (17) *in USBA tourney
6. Luther McCarty 31-3-1 (25) *lost title shot in December
7. Dick O’Brien 37-3-0 (32) *in USBA tourney
8. Jack Downey 32-4-2 (12)
9. Ralph Brooks 26-3-1 (5) (lost to Wills in April, 1920)
10. Sam Berger 30-9-1 (22)

Downey and Berger are the most likely candidates for the World title shot in July.
I’m leaning towards Downey, as Berger has lost 5 of his last 10 fights.
