Draft Issue?
I don't understand how this is possible? I play as the Buffalo Sabres. It's a fictional league but everything is set up as the same as the NHL (basically, I just wanted the NHL with fictional players).
In the draft, I have found that some of my players that are in the minor league but then re-enter the draft and then I need to re-draft them the next year. Is that possible? Look at the history below and the two examples. You can see the players are signed by the minor league team but then are subsequently drafted. For example, Lindgren is signed by the Buffalo Sabres minor league team, the Rochester Americans. He signs a contract on June 13th. Then he enters the draft on June 28th and I have to sign him to the Sabres. Are players in the minor league team able to enter the draft? I thought if they are in a minor league team, they were already drafted by the NHL team. Am I looking at this correctly? Last edited by BKL; 03-16-2018 at 08:45 PM. |

We were actually just talking about this on the stream earlier this week.
It seems the most likely option is because of the smaller database, an injury in the AHL caused the team to sign a younger player to fill the void. This would give them AHL rights, but their NHL rights would still be available which is why they can get drafted. Just a concession for the smaller database. |

Yeah, there's no restriction (beyond age) on who can play in the minor league in a fictional game. They don't need to be drafted by the top-level league.

Draft Issue?

So instead of drafting them, could I just call them up from the AHL to my NHL team? In other words, is there any sense in using a draft pick for a player already in my AHL minor team? Also, what happens if he’s drafted by another different NHL team? Would he be removed from his current AHL team to whom he’s contracted and now be assigned to the new drafting teams AHL minor team? I'm not 100% sure how it works in Fictional Game, but I would assume that the rights reset when the contract does as well, enabling them to be a Free Agent again. Regardless, their NHL rights are not owned by you, therefore anyone could draft them if they are of age. If not, then they would be free to sign them. |

What you are saying is that in the NHL draft, you are really drafting the "rights" to the player - you can send him to your minor league affiliate or call him up. If you draft the player rights, he can then only play for your NHL team. If no one drafts that player's right, then he can be signed by any team. So, an undrafted player could contract with the AHL Rochester Americans and play for them, and then subsequently re-enter the NHL draft. His rights could then be drafted by an NHL team (with a different minor league affiliate) even though he already has playing time with an AHL team. At that point, his rights are then owned by the NHL team and he will play in their system under a contract with that NHL team. Am I looking at this correctly? Thanks for your help! |

It's a little more murky in real life because you won't ever see a situation like this is real life (because the player would either be obligated to play in the Canadian Hockey League, USHL, College, or overseas) if they are un-drafted. This will happen in fictional because of the smaller player base though. |
