how do ratings work for historical leagues?

posted in the other forum, but maybe it belongs here. i've never tried historical. I started a league in 1991, using "career" for potential ratings and "ootp engine" instead of start every year. I understand RPs worked much differently then vs now. But, i'm surprised the RP ratings look so low. For example, I honed on on Mariano Rivera. on 100% accurate, he's got a 55 potential rating as a RP, and his cutter tops out at like 105. I would think it would be much higher. but, i look at other RPs, and none seem to have dominate pitch ratings or potential ratings. Is that normal?

Well, in 1991 Mariano Rivera was in the South Atlantic League, and was four years away from a 5-3, 5.51 debut season. I'd say he's pretty fortunate to have a 55 potential rating given all that. Don't worry though...As his career progresses, he should become Super Mo. You've thrown a bit of a monkey wrench into that though by using the OOTP engine with (I assume) no recalc. If you do that, he's at the mercy of the game engine, and could become anything from RL Brien Taylor to RL Mariano Rivera.

yeah, you're on what my question is. On the one hand, i have it set to base potential on career stats, so Mo's potential should be Mo. On the other hand, bullpens changed a lot from 1991 - 1995, so his existing potential could be better than other future stud RPs. i'm wondering as the game kinda shifts eras how it will unfold. i'm totally fool with then engine becoming "reality" and realizing that once you play one game, a player is no longer "himself" but is the engine's version. Except for Mo.

The recalc thing is really important to keep Mo in beast mode. I've seen potential go up as an historical player gets closer to their dominant seasons too, but that may or may not happen for you without recalc enabled.

why would you need recalc if you do peak best of 3 season??
isn't their something like:
POTENTIAL RATINS based on peak 3 years and stats generated in the game?

When instructions say real life stats, do they mean actual real life stats or the stats generated in the game??

The reason for all the different rating combinations is to allow each player to find a combo he likes

Speaking of Mariano, I’ve done many long-term sims (using 1-yr recalc) and Mariano has always underperformed. I’d be interested to know if anyone has had better results with him.

I haven't had great results with him. Certainly not Mariano-like results. He was a 4-time All-Star, with one Mariano Rivera Award (Reliever of the Year Award) in his twenty year career in my 63-year OOTP16 HRD game. He was the runner up for the MRA twice, but as I said not exactly Mo-results.

EDIT: This was with 3-year recalc double weighted, Neutralized, Remaining Years of Career, 3-year period, 3-year period for the Historical Player Ratings settings. In my OOTP19 game, I'm now using 5-year recalc double weighted, Real, Remaing Years of Career, Entire Career, Entire Career, so it would be interesting to see what would happen if he came into this one. I've always used neutralized park factors, and a neutralized weather file as well.
