Anyone a NASCAR fan/historian?

I'm not.

But growing up n N.Carolina, some stories are bound to get stuck in your head. The sport's legendary beginnings are rooted in Prohibition & moonshine runners. I'd heard before of moonshine being made & sold at the racetracks. Right under the local law enforcement's nose. Either w/their blessing or a wink-wink.

Well looks like they found proof (no pun intended) @ the old track in N.Wilkesboro. (In baseball terms this would be NASCAR's equivalent to Forbes Field or Shibe Park) I just thought it was interesting.

I'm not really a NASCAR fan myself but it's neat that they're planning a race at Wilkesboro (which, as a sign of my lack of fandom, this is the first I'm hearing of it). That was an old mainstay that NASCAR abandoned when they tried to move into other, potentially large markets like Dallas and Chicago (I think the Dallas race is specifically the one that pushed WIlkesboro out). It's true that it's kind of out in the middle of nowhere and it only attracted diehards, but, like, the same can be said for Green Bay, Wisconsin and the NFL...

It is understandable why NASCAR expanded like they did. It is just too bad for places like Wilkesboro & Rockingham cause the annual race or 2 was like the area's entire economy.

I mean kind of but I believe they abandoned Dallas, for example. For all the remoteness and smaller sized venue of these places, they were still doing well; NASCAR just got dollar signs in their eyes.

I had to check cause I wasn't sure. But they are still racing in Ft Worth.
