Top batting performance: Burnley's Frederick Stanley clobbers two grand slams in a 9 RBI performance against Accrington on 29 September to lead the Clarets to a 21-2 thumping of the Reds.

Top pitching performance: Reuben Smith of the Reds of Accrington dominated the Bolton Wanderers, twirling a no-hitter in the second game of the 15 June doubleheader in front of a crowd of 3,478 at Pike's Lane. Smith walked just two and struck out two as he flummoxed Wanderers batsmen all day and led his club to a six runs to none victory.

The almanac for the Baseball League 1889 season can be acquired here, to be perused at your leisure. (WinRAR required to unzip the almanac.)

As if to demonstrate with positive proof that the match is truly not finished until the last out is recorded, the West Bromwich Albion clubs plated nine Hawthorns in the bottom of the eighth to steal a victory from the luckless Rams of Derby County, by a score of 15-12 on 3 August.

This game is also notable for a brawl in the fourth ignited by Rams Pitcher Chris Reilly hitting his opposite Gearróc McNurr with a pitch, to the delight of 2,347 patrons showing up to Stoney Lane that wet and chilly "summer" afternoon, whilst the latter was attempting a rare positive performance at the plate.

Professional Base Ball A Big Hit In North and Midlands

Both League and Alliance Very Profitable With Exceptions

Even Everton Is Wildly Profitable; Whither Accrington?

As the opening match of the 1890 season draws nearer, a review of the finances of professional base ball clubs north in industrial country shows an industry that has great potential to grow more lucrative, and spread throughout the kingdom. It will be more difficult with time for the southern teams to ignore what may be an inevitability towards universal professionalism.

Tickets for base ball matches, priced between 3d. and 2/-, depending on club and region, are proving irresistible to the labour and professional classes. For those unfamiliar, base ball is a sport imported from America, one in which both brains and brawn are prized and on full display. The batsman who can muscle the long fly, or pitcher (base ball's version of the cricket bowler) who can use his wits to "strike out" the batsman (the near equivalent of taking a wicket) are also highly prized and well compensated, with some players as high as on £2 per week, in addition to their regular jobs.

Fixtures are set for one match each Friday and two matches (a "doubleheader") each Saturday, for twenty-two weeks starting in May and winding up in September, with half of the matches a club engages in at their home grounds, and the other half on "road". Matches generally start at one in the afternoon, with a second game following immediately the first on Saturdays, generally commencing coincidentally with tea. With matches lasting approximately two hours, there is little to fear as for the sun going down on an unfinished match.

The attendance by the locals is increasing for nearly every team, up twenty-one per cent. on average in the League and twenty-seven per cent. in the Alliance, 1889 over 1888. Nearly every club in the league is very profitable, with some clubs claiming a profit of over £1,000 in 1889 alone. Aston Villa is presumed to be the most profitable club, as their attendance increased by some fifty per cent. to almost 100,000 patrons in 1889, and their turnover is assumed to be over £2,000.

The money is so good for professional base ball that there is talk among League members about admitting additional clubs, and perhaps even playing games on working days, as many towns in the League have industrial shifts outside of regular daylight hours. In the United States, professional base ball is so popular that teams play well over one hundred games every year from April through October, and some teams even play on Sunday, although not without controversy. As unlikely as Sabbath base ball is in England, it is possible that games will be scheduled on each of the other six days of the week within the next few years.

And the play in the Alliance is considered nearly as good, and better by some, as in the League which presumably garnered the very best clubs with its inception in 1888. The Black Cats of Sunderland were invited to play in the League for 1890, whilst the Everton Blues were exiled back to the Alliance, which should conclusively prove the relative proficiency of each association.

One very glaring exception to the happy returns is the Accrington club, which is owned by Sir Finlay Drury, chairman of the Accrington Corporation Steam Tramways Company. As generous as he is known to be with his labour, he is equally and curiously mean with his base ball operations. Thorneyholme Road is widely understood to be the most dilapidated grounds in the game, making for a depressing attendance experience, and he has been quite penny-pinching on playing talent as well. This has not gone unnoticed by the Hyndburn locals, who have been staying away in droves, spending the past two summers counting the moments until football season arrives instead. A forty per cent drop in attendance for the club goes right against the general tide, and were it not for Sir Finlay's close business association with Francis Ley, the father of British base ball, The Reds instead of the Blues would surely have been the team put right out of the League over the winter.

The 1890 Baseball League Campaign Starts To-Day!

New Club Sunderland Are Immediate Co-Favorite
With Burnley, Aston Villa

Can Accrington Keep Heads Above Water?

As the opening match of the 1890 season dawns upon us, there are some interesting questions about the potential both on and off field, even as clubs are making scads of cash from their base ball enterprises.

The most interesting move during the between-season period was the decision by the League to bring in the Sunderland club as a replacement for the simply awful Everton club. Each club has taken over the other's place in their respective former associations and seek to prove the relative worth of each association to the other.

One interesting aspect of the Sunderland inclusion is the location of the team on the coast of the North Sea, eighty-five miles straightline from its closest competitor in Burnley, and twice that to Birmingham. It's clear that the League has set its sight on nationalising the scope of their association and indeed of the game of base ball, and we can rightly forecast that will occur in short order, resulting from this single first step.

The more interesting aspect of this move is that which takes place on the pitch. The Sunderland side won the Baseball Alliance race rather handily in '89, and boast without a doubt the best young talent in the British game to-day. No fewer than three of the top four, four of the top ten and six of the top fifteen young prospects ranked by wise base ball men belong to the Sunderlands. The names of William Clark, Laurence John, Jesse Robinson and Sydney Regan at the bat; and William Turner and Cyril Radford on the mound, will soon become among the most whispered and the most shouted names of League Baseballers during the coming years. If the other clubs aren't frightened out of their minds by the prospects of something like a Black Cat Dynasty, they are certainly a demented lot indeed.

As for the coming season, Sunderland may make their mark yet on the ledger of 1890, as Aston Villa did presumptuously last season. But the keenest minds of the game are putting their money on either the Villans or on the Clarets of Burnley to repeat. After all, Brandon Bradley and Percy Mitchell have not retired from the Villans, nor have any of the Three Freds or William Ferreira left the Clarets. Blackburn hope to recover from their slight drop down the table and generate increased turnover with a move to their mammoth new 11,000 seat grounds, Ewood Park, constructed at a cost of £10,000. And don't count out Derby County, who still have three of the greatest baseballers in the kingdom in Vivian Mad Dash Sharp, Theophilus Hurley and young hurler Brendan Phillips.

The biggest off-pitch concerns being expressed regard the solvency of the Accrington club who are widely considered to be deeply in the red, in contrast to literally every other club in both the League and the Alliance. The town of Accrington is being well sold on the idea of terrible base ball and are learning to keep their money in their pockets as a result. The grounds are terrible, the town is apathetic, the play is atrocious, and to make things worse, the word is that the Reds have increased their average ticket from 5d. to 8d., highest in the League, in the hopes of making it back to black. Without both a passable product and a comfortable place in which to enjoy it, it strains credulity that they would succeed in their endeavour in this way.
