Roster size

hi

I just purchased the game and started with the 1917 nhl season

I noticed in real life the Canadians only used 12 players for the whole season, i see that the players are on the roster, however the game is
saying i must have 17 to fill out the roster

Can i have only 12 players on the team, only the players that played that season

No, you'll still need to have enough to fill the roster - the game can't operate properly with extremely small roster sizes, so it needs a few more than were actually used at the time in the earliest seasons. You can set the icetime for the extra ones to a minimal level, though.
