Despite losing Steve Carlton early in May, some quick horse trading enabled one of the worst teams of the 70s to break .500...albeit barely!

I remember that season, Carlton was so dominating (I was 16). He won 27 of the Phillies 59 games!! Most incredible performance I have yet to see by a pitcher on such a poor team.

Who says that pitching wins mean nothing, and that only advanced saber- metrics can be used to tell whether a pitcher was truly dominant? Carlton's numbers stand alone for 1972 - no WAR needed. He had a great year.
