Early players ratings? (historical challenge)
I'm trying the Edmonton Eskimos challenge - winning the Stanley Cup in 25/26 : there seems to be some weird ratings considering real life stats, exemple Barney Stanley who is 0,5 * with most skills below 10, IRL he scored 22pts in 29 games, he was 10th scorer in the league.
I think his ratings for this season are more suit for the later years when he played in the minors as of now, and considering the Eskimos have next to no D beside Eddie Shore, and the abysmal free agent market, it is next to impossible to succeed at that challenge |

I think I have Stanley's peak and decline set too early, right now he's set up to start going downhill before 1920. I'll adjust that a little later, although the later stage of his career will always be a little hard to handle because he dropped off the cliff so much from 26-27 (good player in a major league) to 27-28 (second-tier player in a minor league.)
Re: the thin D, you'll probably have to make a trade. In real life, they got Bobby Benson (2.5 stars in the game) in mid-season from Saskatoon. You don't start with a lot of tradeable assets, but there are some high-potential young forwards available as free agents... |

thanks for your detailled answer - I completely bypassed trades due to the thin talent pool but it is a valuable solution
Oh according to https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/...049331926.html Benson was traded to Saskatoon with another player, not the other way around, that solve the problem BTW I have two other remarks - is it normal that players are traded for draft picks in WCHL/PCHL? I guess there weren't drafts back then -> I think that drafts are active by default in Historical Challenges? - I guess that it is not an oversight but with the Seattle challenge I managed to sign Jack Dannagh who was supposed to be retired this particular season, as he is a 4,5* I think he is a massive gamechanger and after a rough half season I completely crushed the regular season and steamrolling the playoffs with my stellar offense, including the Sens in the Stanley Cup final Last edited by FrenchMatt; 03-27-2023 at 04:21 AM. |

Hmm, hockeydb says Edmonton first, but hockeyreference (and my copy of Total Hockey, and the SIHR database) say he was sold from Saskatoon to Edmonton in January, and he has a couple of playoff games listed for Edmonton, so I think Saskatchewan-Edmonton is the correct order and hockeydb is wrong. (Sparrow, the guy who went Edmonton-Saskatchewan, was sold a couple of days later, so that may have been settlement of the deal.)
Drafts are active, yeah - you can turn them off during setup of a non-challenge game, but the challenges use the default league. The WCHL one is limited to Western Canadian players only to approximate the agreement they eventually reached with the NHL. I'll add Darragh's temporary retirement to the historical presets list, so he won't be available in that season anymore. |
