Thumbs up Philadelphia Flyers - The Retool not the Rebuild!

We have decided to start another dynasty, this time we will be taking over for the Philadelphia Flyers!

We will also keep the Arizona dynasty going, but this one hit home with me being a lifelong Flyers fan!

Team Introduction / Initial Path Forward Plan

Let's start with a brief rundown of the team by position starting with the Forwards:

Kevin Hayes, Travis Konecny, Joel Farabee & Scott Laughton are all signed to long contracts and we won't be trying to force a non-hockey trade involving these guys,

James van Riemsdyk is an obvious trade piece seeing as he is on that expiring contract. We won't look to move him right away by any means, but we won't wait too long as risk him getting hurt either.

Here is a look at our (healthy) Dmen to start the season:

Ivan Provorov, Rasmus Ristolainen & Travis Sanheim (8yr extension after this season) are all locked in relatively long term.

Tony DeAngelo was a free agent signing this offseason and we won't really be looking to move him until this upcoming offseason.

Justin Braun may be on an expiring contract, but wouldn't fetch much of a return anyways, so we will likely run him out there all season.

We have A LOT of injured players to start the season:

Ryan Ellis has 4 more years on his contract after this season. We would love for him to get healthy to just suit up and eat some minutes on the backend.

Cam Atkinson has 2 more years on his contract after this season. IF he can get healthy, he might be another guy we could move next offseason.

Bobby Brink was the 34th overall pick in 2019. We would love for him to get a shot in the middle six forward group if/when he gets healthy.

Sean Couturier is also locked up long term (8yrs and a no trade clause to boot). I've also loved his game and we expect him to be with us for quite some time in this sim.

Felix Sandstrom looks to be a solid backup goalie, but we will likely need to claim a goalie at the start of the season to backup.

Speaking of goalies, our starting goalie is none other than Carter Hart.

He is only signed for this year and next for ~ $4million. We would love to lock him up long term eventually, but we can slow play this for a bit.

All that being said, there isn't much we can do right at this moment. The goal is to make small additions to the team to hopefully help them remain competitive and try to source out good hockey trades.
The waiver wire will be our friend and I'd like to upgrade our bottom D pair / bottom six forward with some veterans (if possible).

Also, we do have Cam York (14th overall in 2019) starting the season in the AHL and ideally he fills that left side spot on the 3rd pair D before long.

We have a couple young forward prospects in the AHL to start the season, so there is some promising talent coming!

Next update will likely be around January 1st to give an update of our progress so far!

As always, thanks for reading and please comment with any suggestions for this dynasty!

Jan. 14, 2023 - First Team Update!

Our start to the season was almost exactly what we expected. We struggled in our first 41 games managing a measly 12 wins (and 6 OT losses).

Below are the current league standings:

*Not sure why there is a dash by Winnipeg for their "streak"?

Boston only has 16 wins, but they're also won 7 of their last 8. I wouldn't count them out just yet with the roster they have.
Florida got off to a very nice start, but they've gone ice cold losing their last 9 straight.

Let's recap some of the moves we have made so far:

Signed Brad Richardson to a 1yr deal for $750,000

Claimed Morgan Geekie off waivers from Seattle (currently our 4th line Centre)

Isaac Ratcliffe traded to Nashville for a 4th round pick
We wanted to make room on our 4th line and didn't want to risk losing him on waivers for nothing.

Yegor Zamula traded to Dallas for Will Butcher
Dallas had Will on their trading block and we wanted to upgrade our bottom D pair

Claimed Fabian Zetterlund off waivers from NJ and waived Brad Richardson.

Some injury news so far:

Cam York hurt his back and missed a few months (back healthy now)

Sean Couturier suffered a setback with his injury (fully recovered now)

Cam Atkinson & Bobby Brink are now listed as day-to-day on the injured list. Hopefully they will be back soon

Felix Sandstrom is back healthy and has had 5 nice starts since returning.

Let's take a look at our forwards stats so far:

We like the performance of our 2nd line with Joel Farabee, Scott Laughton (now our 3rd line C) & Owen Tippett (4 GWG so far).
We were hoping to have Zack MacEwen playing on the 4th line, but too many guys in front of him right now (we might look to just move him).

Now let's take a look at our Dmen stats so far:

Very impressed with Tony DeAngelo so far. Take a look at the game he had back in October (vs the Sharks).

Overall, this is about what we expected from this group. At this point, the most likely trade candidate here is Ivan Provorov.
He "should" have good trade value and will have two years remaining on his contract after this season.

Last (but definitely not least), let's take a look at how Carter Hart is doing:

There was a couple rough games in November, but he has turned it around lately.

Currently we are looking to find a trade partner for a James van Riemsdyk deal, but he might have less value than we expected.
We need to move him sooner than later or risk him getting hurt and not being able to move him.

Also, we will need to make room for Atkinson and Brink, so we will likely trade/waive MacEwen and either Wade Allison or Fabian Zetterlund.

Our next update will likely be at the end of the regular season, unless something major happens between now and then!

Thanks as always for reading and feedback is greatly appreciated!

Looking forward to the deadline and the rest of the season. Looks like you'll have to make your splashes in the offseason. This is a good dynasty, looks like it could be a challenge. At least you might still get Couturier back for more of the season than the IRL Flyers.

Arrow End of 2022/23 Regular Season!

After a very good January, we were up and down the rest of the way. We lost twice to Anaheim (worst record in the league).

We ended up finishing the season with a record of 34-42-6 for 74 points. We ended up tied with Buffalo for 2nd last in the East (tied for 4th last overall).

Here are the Eastern Conference standings:

Shocked to see Boston and NYR miss out on the playoffs in this sim. Also, amazed to see Columbus make it in this year.

Here are the Western Conference standings:

Very nice season from Vancouver and a disappointing season for LA.

We decided to trade James van Riemsdyk to Vegas for a 3rd round pick and a 5th round pick.
Honestly, we thought he would have had more value, but this is the trade we settled on.

After making this trade, we moved Kevin Hayes from Centre to LW for the rest of the season. He was joined on our top line with Sean Couturier and Cam Atkinson.

Here are our end of season stats for the forwards:

Cam Atkinson came back from injury and put up 29 points in 39 games. Impressed with Owen Tippett having a 20 goals season. Also, nice production from Wade Allison on the 4th line.

Here are our end of season stats for the defense:

Cam York could not stay healthy this year, hopefully he can play lots next year. Very nice season for Travis Sanheim by almost hitting 20 goals on the back end.

Here are our end of season stats for the goalies:

Hopefully with some improvements up front, we can support Carter Hart next year and see some better numbers from him.

Here is how the NHL playoff bracket looks:

One guy we need to find a path forward for is Rasmus Ristolainen. IRL he is one of the most polarizing Flyers, but it will not be easy to trade him with 4yr remaining and $21.5m ($5.1m cap hit).
Perhaps we can find a trade partner where a team has a similar contract they are looking to move on from.

Our next recap will most likely be at the start of the offseason!

Offseason Recap - Heading to 2023/24!

We are back! After sorting out some computer issues, we have restored this save and below is an offseason recap as we head to the 2023/24 season!

Brad Richardson & Justin Braun retired (neither would've been resigned)

July 4th - Rasmus Ristolainen (4yr & $21.5m) traded to Chicago for Connor Murphy (3yr & $13.2m)
We needed to move RR55 and we found a willing partner in Chicago. We save ~8.3m in total salary and still have a usable player in Murphy as a #6/7 Dman.

Draft Lottery - Ducks won the lottery and picked Bedard, Montreal got 2nd pick and took Michkov, LA got 3rd pick and look Charlie Stramel (NCAA), Buffalo picked Tyler Peddle (QMJHL) 4th and we picked Adam Fantilli 5th overall!
With the 45th overall pick we selected Cameron Allen (OHL).

October 11 - Cam York (w/ a 4th rounder) traded to San Jose for Mario Ferraro (3yr at $3.25m per)
While checking the trading block prior to the start of the season we stumbled across Ferraro. He averaged ~20min a game last year (game rating of "70") and will start the year on our 3rd pair.

Let's take a look at the forwards as we start a new season:

We have too many RW right now. Zayde Wisdom (listed as C, but more of a RW) & Bobby Brink both sitting to start the season.
Cam Atkinson (just turned 34) might be a logical trade candidate, so this will be something we keep an eye on.

Here are the Dmen as we start a new season:

Tortorella wants to sit Ryan Ellis, but we will try to force him to play him over Ronnie Attard / Connor Muprhy. We'd like see if he can at least contribute since he is signed for 4yr and $24m total.

Carter Hart is going to take the lions share of the workload with 6'8" Ivan Fedotov backing him up.

Here are our current salary cap obligations:

We will sim ~28 games or so (maybe to around January 1st) to get 1/3 of the season underway and come back with a recap!
