Federal League
In 1915 the Federal League filed a lawsuit to prevent Major League Baseball from barring them from becoming a third major league. Kenesaw Mountain Landis was the judge in that case. He famously let litigation drag on until the Federal League went bankrupt. This league juxtaposes he was not the judge on the case and the Feds won their lawsuit, thus making three major leagues.
The Feds, finally finding stability, played the next 5 seasons with only one major change: for the 1920 season, citing travel costs, the league split into a two division format. The winners of the division would compete for the league title in a best of 7 series.

Baltimore Terrapins
Founded: 1914 Ballpark: Terrapin Park Championships: 0 After finishing dead last in the Federal League in 1915 (47-107, 40 GB), the Terps rebounded to finish the 1916 in 3rd with an 80-74 record. The team promptly returned to mediocrity as quickly as they left it; finishing no higher than 5th until 1920 when the ended the season at 87-67 (2nd in the East, 20 GB).

Brooklyn Atlantics
Founded: 1914 (as Brooklyn Tip-Tops) Ballpark: Washington Park Championships: 1 (1920) Renamed for a former team that played in Brooklyn after gaining new ownership, the Atlantics were a .500 franchise for 4 years. The advent of the divisional format helped the team greatly - they won a league record 103 games. The Atlantics defeated the Pittsburgh Alleghenys in the league's first championship series.

Chicago Whales

Kansas City Packers
Founded: 1913 (Covington Blue Sox) Ballpark: Gordon and Koppel Field Championships: 1 (1918) The Packers struggled for most of their existence. In 1918 they managed to shock everyone by going 94-60 to win their only league title.

Newark Eagles
Founded: 1913 (Indianapolis Hoosiers) Ballpark: Harrison Park Championships: 2 (1913, 1914 Indianapolis) A powerhouse when they entered the league, the Newark Peppers have failed to recapture that success since relocating. Coming off their worst season, there have been rumblings the team may return to their Indianapolis roots.

Pittsburgh Alleghenys
Founded: 1913 (Stogies) Ballpark: Exposition Park Championships: 1 (1916) After failing to capture the league title in 1915, the renamed Pittsburgh Alleghenys ended the 1916 campaign atop the league. With the exception of 1918, the team has always been in contention to win the league in the final days of the season. In 1920 they played the Brooklyn Atlantics in the league's first championship series.

St. Louis Terriers
Founded: 1913 Ballpark: Handlan's Park Championships: 1 (1917) After the Terriers fell short of the League title in 1915 and 1916, they finally overcame the Alleghenys to win their lone title in 1917. Unfortunately for Terrier fans, the team has been languishing in the cellar of the league ever since.

1920 - Dissolution of the MLB
As rumors of the Black Sox Scandal persisted, MLB leaders looked for ways to punish & curtail gambling. At the time the three-man National Commission consisting of AL President Ban Johnson, NL President John Heydler, and Reds owner Garry Herrmann were in charge of Major League Baseball. When the owners asked Herrmann to step down, the Commission was deadlocked at two. Frustrated, a plan to replace the Commission with three men who had no financial interest in baseball. Heydler convinced all eight NL teams and three AL teams to support this plan and dissolved Major League Baseball. (Note: this actually happened in 1920 & led to the creation of the office of Commissioner).
With the dissolution of Major League Baseball, the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Browns are sold and merged into their Federal League counterparts. The Boston Braves owner purchases the Kansas City Packers and merges the teams to form the Boston Bees. The Philadelphia Phillies (renamed Greyhounds) and Cleveland Indians (renamed Spiders) join the Federal League. The remaining former MLB clubs join to form the United League.

FYI this is not an official Terriers logo. It is in fact a design my wife made almost 20 years ago that I (stupidly, it turns out) used on my website for a page on the Terriers about that same time. She uses it for her business cards.
I've just discovered it is being used on T-Shirts being sold online. Anyone know a good copyright lawyer? |
