June happened

Nothing to report, really. We’re still trapped in a division with two sharks, our progress is mildly negative, and July is still to come. Overall outlook for the year is grim.

For June, 11-14. Overall 37-42, Division 4th, Overall 16th. Still losing ground, a trickle that’s about to become a flood. Next month is loaded with shark attacks, should shove us right into the Dead Zone.

Damage Assessment

Far too many torpedoes in the water for all of them to miss during July, but is the ship sinking?

11-15 (.423), 48-58 (.453) Overall. Division 3rd (+1), Overall 17th (-1). We definitely took some hits, but none of them directly to the engine room. Foundering, but not sunk.

All-Star Game happened, we sent Max Scherzer (2.78 ERA apparently a fan favorite despite a 7-10 record). He did not appear in the game, the New Orleans blacklisting continues. Honestly, if I had my choice of two dozen perfect arms to throw, I probably would bench Max, too.

The good news is that many/most of the biggest shark attacks of this season are behind us now. The remaining schedule ahead of us is roughly average. No playoffs this year, for sure.

But unless we get deeply mired in an extended losing streak, we should stay out of the Dead Zone.

So August came and went. 12-16 (.429).

Overall 62-72 .463 Division 3rd Overall 17th. No playoffs, no wildcard, no relegation, no promotion. Another mediocre Perfect season, nothing to report, really.

Oh, Sale is back on the team. We still have no use for him. So there’s that. Also Gallo, Moseby, the bad Babe Ruth (SP), and Devers. A bunch of also-rans. Maybe Tourney Team can find a reserve spot for one of em, I dunno.

Regular season ends

Sept/Oct: 18-13 (.580), which brings to season total to 77-85 (.475). Division 3rd, Overall 17th.

All in all, considering our division (sending two teams to the playoffs), a very solid finish for the Penguins, +2 games over projection. We are not displeased. The sports writers will have some sort of drivel to babble about “rebuilding year” or whatever.

Perhaps next season will deal us a friendlier deck, or perhaps we’ll get four sharks in our division, time will tell.

The junior division teams had much more interesting stretch runs, this year.

Tomato Sauced in Division Series

Force Finishes Off Crawdads

This means that the Force will be playing in Perfect next season (briefly, they’re in for a massacre.)

You need pitching to win in Perfect. Uh uh, nope, not the Brutes.

Brutes to play in Diamond Series

Good luck to our opponent, the Ktown Rustics [zer0das]. We only played one 3-game series during the regular season, so not much info to work with. Vancouver took that series 2-1, but I doubt that’s meaningful.

Diamond Series Champions

In gem of a Game 7, Ordonez hit a run-scoring double in the bottom of the 14th (!!) to win the Diamond championship game. Coveleski of KTown was named player of the game, despite pitching a 8-inning gem in a losing effort, but Vizcaino took the loss.

For the Penguins, Hoyt pitched a solid 6, followed by Strasburg, Sutter, Sanchez (3 innings) and finally Halladay (3 innings) of scoreless and brilliant relief.

An extended pitching exhibition, from both teams, that just might be unmatched in Vancouver history.

Kirby Puckett (.440, 4 HR, 18 RBI) was named the series MVP.

We’d like to thank the Rustics [zer0das] for a terrific series all around. Nail biter to the very end, well played and GG.

Awards:
Fernando Tatis, Jr. Great Bat 3B
Troy Tulowitski Great Glove SS
Bruce Sutter Save Streak 29G

Worst thing about Mondays

…is that there isn’t much to write about.

Penguins are in a fairly friendly league-division this season, looks like the NC is filled with only-human teams, no robotic megasharks. First glance evaluation only; there could be a poison pill hidden in there somewhere.

The poor, poor Brutes. PeL rookie season, already seriously overmatched, and trapped in the same division as the league’s top-seeded team. They’re gonna lose 100, maybe more. I’d do some cross-training, but they don’t have enough defense to bother. See if I can acquire some heavy duty defenders and get them on the cross training train at some point during the season.

April in P440

I like our chances this season. I’ve just cursed the team by saying so, but this is a league of just regular players, it actually looks competitive. There’s a rock-crushing sharkbot, the odds on favorite to win the Series this year, but he’s over in the AC where he won’t be much bother.

April was, by early season evaluation (large error margin), one of our rougher months on the schedule. We won in Apr.

14-11 for Apr, Division 1st +1½, Overall 10th. As usual, we’re better at home than on the road. We’re dropping the coin-flip games, no worries.

We’re actually scoring runs, which indicates that the pitching we’re facing is not entirely eye-bleedingly Perfect thus far, as it so often is. ERA 1st, Runs Allowed 1st. Crisco pitchers are doing their thang. Defense (as always) is there.

Don’t pop the champagne yet, there’s a long long season to go.

Come what May

15-12 for May (.556). Division t-1st (there are three teams within ½ game currently).
30-23 (.566) Overall t-7th.

Do you say you prefer actual competition to the nonsense that usually happens in PeL? Looks like it’s right here in P440. Hope it stays this way all season!

Pitching is doing its thang, 3rd in RA, 1st in ERA, Bullpen 4th. Max is having a particularly good year, in terms of ERA and WHIP, but whining about his run support.

Hitters–well, looks like about normal for here in deadball city.

Nothing particularly unusual or eventful to report, my little waterfowl are just enjoying the surfing thus far. Our first inter-league shark attack doesn’t happen until July. There’s another in Aug, but they’re both brief attacks.

Schedule looks fairly friendly in June. then roughly average for the rest of the season. Difficult to judge for certain, this league features a lot of teams at or near the .500 mark.

Let’s hope the little chillybirds don’t suffer in the summer heat, as they often do.

Division lead.

June went well, 17-10 (.630). We pulled a little bit ahead, 4 games out front. Overall 47-33 (.588), up to 5th.

But there are shark attacks in July and August, and the rest of the schedule is not quite as accommodating. Expect the race to tighten up quickly.

Pitching staff is humming along, we lead the league in ERA and BABIP. Considering how unimpressive the staff is by PeL standards, that’s largely Igloo effect. Some day we’ll acquire some meaningful arms and maybe we can open the ballpark up again.

All Star break and beyond

Well, that was the biggest shark attack of the season. Only one little baby shark attack left (3 games) in August.

For July: 17-7 (.708). Pre-AS, we were nearly untouchable, even the biggest shark lost his series against us. Total 63-42 (.600), Division 1st (+10), Overall 5th, Mag #47.

We started losing toward the end of the month, but man, that 9-game winning streak felt sweet. Let’s hope the losing does not continue! The schedule says the remaining games are average-minus, “no sweat, boss.”

We’ll see. The Pessimistic Forecast Model™ says we win 93 this year, but the margin of error is still pretty big. 93 would tie our best PeL record to date.

Just keep the wheels on the bus, fellas.

P.S. We sent TWO players to the ASG, Realmuto got to make a courtesy visit, and Max went again. Neither player actually appeared in the game, the New Orleans All Star Blacklisting continues. The press is starting to notice.

Well, the collapse hasn’t happened yet. Unless we do a September Swoon of Cubs magnitude, we should clinch the division.

For Aug, 16-12 (.571). Overall 80-53 (.602), Division 1st (+10) Overall 4th Mag#16 Games remaining 29. Highest Overall position we’ve held all season, and honestly the schedule doesn’t suggest imminent catastrophe. 13 at home, 16 away, no bueno.

We lead the league in pitching (1st in every category), Offensively we’re around…call it 10th. Igloo normal, except the hitting is a little better than Penguin average this season. We aren’t facing nearly as many Perfect Arms or Perfect Bats.

Keep an eye on Pebble Beach, the strongest wildcard contender and in good schedule position, too. I’d expect to see them in the playoffs.

Press Release 9/15/2062

The New Orleans Penguins are proud to announce the premieres of two of their most talented September call-ups:

Willie Wells (a.k.a. El Diablo), an extraordinarily talented young shortstop from the Chicago American Giants and Newark Eagles. Hailed as a five-tool player, Wells is the most exciting acquisition for the Penguins in quite some time.

Nolan Ryan (the Ryan Express), rumored to have one of the greatest fastballs our scouts have ever seen. The young fireballer should provide a substantive contrast from our Crisco Brigade.

Disastrous Vancouver season ends

Team owner orders Management shuffle and a rebuilding season for the Brute Force, who went from Diamond Series winners in 2061 to finishing dead last in 2062, an epic yo-yo collapse.

“In a division with two hundred-game winners, someone has to be the mud scraped off on the dugout stairs. This season, it was our turn.” – Left fielder R. Acuna, Jr., who ended the season in an extended slump, batting .210.

Vancouver lost 117 games, easily their worst season ever.

We reached the New Orleans General Manager for comment:

“While we certainly would have loved going deeper into the playoffs, Wooster played a tough series and they deserved the win. We wish them well in the playoffs ahead.

As for us, it was a remarkable and encouraging season, regardless. We look forward to meeting whatever challenges next season brings.”

Teeming with sharks

Simply no other words to describe it. Sharks and chum.

This division is already decided. Not one, but two sharks. Several other divisions are decided before the end of April, too. My schedule is teeming with teeth, from Apr 1 to Oct 3–sharks from my division, sharks from the other divisions, and inter-league sharks eager to devour a Penguin (or ten.)

Apr 14-12 (.538) Division 3rd Overall 10th. That’s the peak for the season, every month from here on out is heavy with blood in the water. Some months (July and Sep) are going to be pure misery.

Losing record at home. This is not a promising sign for us.

Lather on the Crisco, staff. You’re going to need every inch of drop on your curve balls.

Shark Attacks (round two)

Our second month of serious shark attacks (repeated throughout this season’s schedule). So how did the Crisco and Defense strategy hold up?

Not too awful. We were 14-15 in May (.483), and our losing streaks are alternating with winning streaks. Division 3rd, Overall 12. We had to send Gary Peters (our experimental second lefty) to the minors, 0-7, ERA 6.8 over two months. As suspected, lefties in general just hate hate hate PeL, because it hates on them.

So Mussina’s back, and while Moose has never been a great pitcher at this level, his ERA’s don’t trend over 5 for long. Moose won’t win either, but he won’t lose every start. We’ll be scouting for a number five.

Otherwise, the pitching is doing fine. Keeping the ball in the park, defense numbers are settling into normal. We’re not smacking the hell out of the baseball, but that’s expected in the Igloo.

If we can keep the decline rate in wins from growing too severe, we might be able to swim through the Wall of Sharks for an average-minus season, instead of a bloody tide season.

El Diablo has settled in just fine. He’s a much better hitter in all respects than Lindor, and keeps the glove work alive. The Ryan Express is doing very well in the bullpen. Just keep the walks down, Nolan, and you’ll be fine.

Preview:
June will suck. July and Aug will be meh, Sep+ will suck. Mark your calendars for 2064, ticket holders, but the box seats should remain pretty empty for the remaining 2063 season.

The teeth…my god, the teeth!

The sharks, they came a-snappin’, as predicted. 10-15 for June (.400).

For the season, 38-42 (.475). Division 3rd, Overall 13th. The only good news is that’s about as bad as things get, at least until September. When the ocean will again be bloody and teeming with fins.

Still seeking a 5th starter, found Bieber doing remarkably well in the bullpen, perhaps he’ll do for now. If not, we can give Clevinger a tryout.

When you don’t have the historical studs, you use the native talent and lots more Crisco.
