Question Robin Roberts

I have the 96 rated SP Peak one. I have used him in the long relief with mixed results. Then I put him in as a starter with the same results. I am in Diamond. The previous owner used him in the pen and he won the Fireman award 6 times. And this is in Perfect!!

His best year he was 23-5-4 2.36 1.00 WHIP.
161 innings in 83 games all from the pen.

How could someone get 23 wins from the pen? Are they possibly putting in crappy starters and setting them to be pulled as soon as possible?

Probably used as a follower in one of those opener/follower setups.

Basically in the opener/follower setup, the starting pitcher goes like an inning, and then the follower does the brunt of the work.

Example: I start a game, throw an inning, and I'm done. Then Roberts comes in. He becomes the pitcher of record, as I (the starter/opener) did not go the required 5 innings to qualify for a win.

IIRC the Tampa Bay Rays ran an opener system a few years back.

83 appearances is quite a lot for a follower though.

I can never get the AI to use pitchers how I want them to, but I would guess this team used a 4 man rotation with a lower pitch count then had Roberts and another SP turned reliever alternate coming in for the 4th/5th inning to pitch two innings. That way any time the team was already ahead they would get the win as the pitcher of record in the fifth, but if the team was trailing the starter would get the loss.

Keep in mind if those historical stats happened many seasons ago then the quality of hitting talent was much, much lower than it is now that every team is stacked with FOTF super cards.
