What to Do if Your Game Won't Load or Repeatedly Crashes

If you are confused or uncertain about any of these instructions, please feel free to post directly in Tech Support. However, if you can follow these steps, it will speed up the process of getting your league working again.

First, make certain that you are using the latest version of the game. If you are using OOTP 2007, it should be 2.0.3.68. If you are using OOTP 8, it should be 8.0.0.13. If you aren't up to date, go to this page and download the appropriate patch or full installation files for your operating system.

If you are using Vista, make sure that you are running in Administrator Mode.

If OOTP won't open at all, uninstall OOTP and delete the OOTP directories in your Application Data folder. Reinstall OOTP and restart your computer. See if that fixes your problem. If not, post as such in Tech Support.

Is the game crashing while you are attempting to create a historical league? If so, try creating the game in Advanced Mode rather than using the League Creation Wizard. If that doesn't work, try creating the game without the option to import full history enabled.

Are you using the OOTP 8 MLB Quickstart? If you are and you are crashing from HTML screens in-game, this is a known issue with no present workaround. Other types of leagues should not have this issue.

Are you using OOTP 8 and crashing while trying to promote or demote coaches or scouts to a position not currently filled by another coach or scout? If so, this is a known issue with no present workaround. The game should not crash if you try to swap between two filled positions.

If you are using the latest version of OOTP, first try disabling FaceGen. In the opening OOTP screen under Game Preferences, change the FaceGen option to Disabled, close OOTP, then reload it and try loading your saved game again. If that works, try Enabling FaceGen and changing FaceGen Mode to Troubleshooting mode 1, then Troubleshooting mode 2 to see if either one will work (each time restarting OOTP first). If neither works, try updating your video card drivers to see if you can get the game to work with FaceGen enabled once more.

If disabling FaceGen won't allow you to load your saved game, check to see if another one of your saved games will start up properly. If you don't have another saved game, quickly create one to use as a test. If none of your saved games will work, uninstall OOTP and delete the Application Data folder. Reinstall OOTP and restart your computer. Try loading your saved games again. If you can't find them in-game, make sure that they are located at the default location or that you changed your Custom User Data Path (found in Game Preferences) to match. If you still can't get any of your saved games to load, post in Tech Support.

If your game will load properly but causes errors, check the How to Speed up Auto-Play FAQ for suggestions on revised settings. Reduce your settings and see if that eliminates your errors.

If one of your saved games doesn't work but others do, check the .lg folder of your saved game in question. Does it include seventeen .dat files? If not, post as such in Tech Support if you don't have a backup to reload. If any of the .dat files are 0 bytes large, again post as such in Tech Support if you don't have a backup to reload. (Don't worry if the retired.dat file is 0 bytes in your first year of play.)

If all of your .dat files seem okay, create a new .lg folder in your saved_games folder. Copy all of the .dat files from your affected league into this new folder. Test if this will load in-game. If so, gradually copy your other files into this new .lg folder and try to load the league. Once you narrow down which files seem to be preventing you from running your league, post in Tech Support.

If your new .lg folder with copies of your .dat files will load but still causes you issues, try opening up your saved game and deleting some leagues in your game universe to see if the game will then run. Only do this on the copy of your league! If the game will run after deleting some leagues, there may be a problem with the particular leagues deleted. Post your findings so far in Tech Support.

If none of the above steps work and you made a recent backup of your league, copy all of the .dat files in your .lg saved game folder to a separate folder for safe-keeping. Following that, rename all of the .bak files in your .lg folder to .dat files and try to load your league.

If you get to this point and you still cannot load your saved game, please post in Tech Support along with all of the steps you have taken so far. Include mention of any error messages you receive. Is it constantly crashing on the same day or at the same event? Look for a trigger. Did you ever delete any leagues in the past? Note this. This will greatly speed us along in assisting you. Thanks.
