Keeping myself interested in macro leagues...
I like setting up seasons and playoffs. Currently I'm doing a something with ten leagues with ten teams each, one for western united states and canada, one eastern usa and canada, one japan, one cuba, one central america and one for the other continents. I have them all set up on my current preferred setup, balanced schedules, 5 playoff teams, best team gets a double-bye. Final two in each league qualify for the association playoffs. With this setup the team with the best regular season record is guaranteed to qualify for association playoffs.
The problem is, I love setting it up, but then I dont really end up caring when Curacao or whoever wins my Association playoffs. I just like seeing the setup work. I've thought about adding other tournaments, kind of being like individual sports having multiple majors, but I'd have to set that all up from scratch so far as I know, and I dont know how that will work with offseasons and player transactions. I dont know. If I'm a manager/GM I usually have a good time playing this game, and I like setting up structures for a season, but I set up the structure and I get bored with watching the results. Im thinking maybe doing NCAA teams might help, that way I can have the massive-ish league I like, and know the teams (maybe sticking to D1 football schools to keep it from going way too slow), but I'd hate to manually change all the leagues and schools and end up still being bored in the end. I dont know. Maybe I have to manage one of the teams to maintain more interest. Thanks for listening, any ideas would be appreciated. |

If you poke around the forum, you'll see quite a few threads about how to maintain interest. So, you're definitely not alone. There will be lots of advise about running a small league at first so you get to know everyone but it doesn't sound like that's for you.
IMO, you need some connection to the league so that you're rooting for or against Curacao or whoever wins. You could do something like make the managers of your teams your friends, family, ex-bosses, etc. Or, maybe you create one average player for each team and see how they do (maybe giving them the name of a friend, family, ex-boss, etc.). Or, pick 20 corporations you like and 20 you hate (Comcast...) and make a league of those. The D1 schools is a good idea. You can root for your alma mater and/or local teams and against the University of Michigan. As long as it's something interesting to you. Bottom line: My advice is to find something so that you have an instant positive or negative reaction to each team you see.
