Tired Catcher
Quick question -
I am managing a 2017 NYY team and Gary Sanchez is literally tired every other game (57%). He catches 9 innings and bats 4-5 times - then 57% tired the next day. I rest him for a day (no pinch hitting), back to 100% rested. Rinse, repeat, 57%. Will it do any good to rest him for 2-3 days, or is there some flaw here? |

When are you checking his fatigue? Right after the game, or after you advance a day? Catchers should be able to do 3 straight easily in most cases.

Good question - after advancing to next day. My experience as well has typically been 4-5 days with no problem between rest days. Have used the thing before of assigning the backup to a specific SP (say, the #5) and never had to rest my starting catcher the entire season ex-doubleheaders. Odd deal.

with catchers it's all about how long of a stretch you are playing. even the next stretch of games after the next day off...
e.g. there's no reason pushing him if he has to take 1 day off during that stretch. in fact, being proactive might allow for a higher %-fatigue during the next stretch of games after the scheduled day off. my goal isn't just maximizing days for a good offensive catcher, but also maximizing the fatigue % per game played. that' doesn't mean i don't run a tired all-start level catcher out there a bit tired. i just don't do it if it doesn't help increase GP. can't stress enough how an early day off can help get an extra game played or at least at higher %s during the ensuing 20+ stretch or in the middle of one. |

I'm still not sure what the deal is with Sanchez here, but I agree with your sentiments overall. Thx.
