All Iron Team

Has anybody fielded an all iron team yet? What are some of the quality iron cards you've run across? I was briefly browsing in the auction house and thought there were some quality players with decent ratings despite the low overalls that categorize them as irons. Sean Casey comes to mind right off the bat. I know fielding an all iron team won't garner many wins or pp, but it seems like another way to enjoy the game. Plus, there's a whole bunch of cards that don't cost much to obtain.

I like Wilmer Difo.

The irons don't have anyone good, really, but they do have some guys like Difo who aren't embarrassingly bad in any one area.

I think a team of irons that is well picked out with the proper strategy and a good ballpark might surprise people. I could see a team like that getting promoted out of the bottom league.

The problem isn't that irons are expensive to buy, but that most people probably just sell them off or let them rot in the inactive list rather than take the trouble to post them in the AH. So you might have trouble acquiring the players you want.

I started to but ended up going another route. I was going to try the approach and build a strong defensive team. Christian Vazquez at catcher, Sean Rodriguez, Tyler Wade, David Eckstein, Ichiro, Byron Buxton were a few that had strong defense at their position. I was looking for pitchers with good control, figuring the defense would help. Lew Burdette was one of my targets.

I pivoted, but agree with OPW, and definitely, think with the right strategy and park it could work (within reason of course). Good luck if you try it.

I'll probably do it tomorrow. At the very least it will give me good practice if they ever have an all iron tournament in ootp20.

You, like Bob Nutting, should be banned from baseball for life for trying to compete with Sean Rodriguez (Serpico).

You probably are right, but it's tough to find good irons. He does play quite a few positions, and had a little power, but definitely has quite a bit of holes in his game.

An all iron team will probably be a cellar dweller in even the weakest of leagues. There are so few that are even worth a roster spot. You can find some decent relievers and utility guys.

If you up it to allow bronze as well, then you can definitely build a fun team. In the beta my all bronze team made the playoffs.

Luis M Castillo (57)

game has him listed as a starting pitcher. I switched him to relief and have him as my long relief/emergency SP. He's performing well above expectations for a 57 ranked card:

Did his stuff rating improve when you changed him to an RP? What was his stuff rating as an SP?

Is it just me, or do his individual ratings seem preposterously high for his overall rating? What am I missing?

I did a 63 or less team in beta. It's a lot of fun. Some players that I didn't see mentioned that I think perform roster-worthy at Victor Reyes, Jordan Zimmermann, and Shelby Miller.

as a SP, his stuff is a 70; so a pretty big jump when converting to RP

yeah, not sure I get the iron card rating myself, considering only his movement rating is low; but I'm going to keep him around as long as he's performing and look to other team holes to fill instead.

And that now begs the question, do you have to convert a SP to a RP to get the benefit of better stuff (like in the playoffs with a 4 man rotation), or can you just slot the SP into the bullpen to get the same effect?

You have to change the position.

Since it is normally stuff +3 on the 1-20 scale I normally use, +13 for this scale seems about right, though.

Pitchers increasing in stuff as a reliever is a well-known phenomenon in baseball.

https://www.si.com/mlb/2014/09/09/sh...ellin-betances

In OOTP, the increased stuff only works when the pitcher comes into the game as a reliever so you can't just set the position as a reliever and then have him start with a stuff bonus. His stamina will also decrease more rapidly if he enters as a reliever, so the stuff is better but he can't last as long in the game.

I've got a Lou Brissie unsung heroes card from my inaugural pack that's held his own at the back end of my rotation. 59 overall card. Not going to light it up with strikeout achievements but seems like a good card for an all-iron team.
