Time for Spring Training. We have some big changes in our pitching staff and word is, on the field that Brian Giles and Ruben Sierra are going to be given chances to grab starting jobs this year.

Chris Brown is kind of on the outs. So is Rob Deer, surprisingly.

The other big news is that Nestor Pena announced his retirement in the offseason. Jim Lowe, who had been the bench coach, is now the manager.

I am not going to lie. I don't really like him. He favours pitching over hitting. Offense over defence. Power over speed.

Basically, he doesn't favour my game. At all.

We are starting off on the leap day with Frank Viola leading the Giants against Mike Scott and the Astros.

I led off the game by flying out to Jim Dwyer in left.

My first play of the spring was starting a nice Priske - Wellman - Cockrell double play to get Bill Doran and Dwyer out.

In the 3rd we got the same two guys, but this time it was a Wellman - Priske - Cockrell double play.

I led off the 4th by grounding out to Dickie Thon at short.

I got the last out of the inning off a grounder by Dave Gallagher.

Frank Williams came in two pitch in the 5th, after Frank Viola did four scoreless. He allowed the bases to load up but I took a grounder from Harold Baines to end the threat.

I led off in the 6th against Mike Shelton and I managed a walk. With one out I stole 2nd and moved to 3rd when Craig Biggio threw the ball away trying to catch me. I was unable to score.

Mike Griffin took over pitching in the 6th after Frank gave up a single to Biggio with one out. I erased on Biggio on a fielder's choice by Gallagher.

Everything changed in the 7th, but I wasn't part of it. The guys scored five runs, mostly from the bevy of pinch hitters Nestor brought in. Mark Berry hit for me and then Alex Tavares played short.

That ended up being all the scoring an we won 5-0.

I went 0 for 2 with a walk and a stolen base.

The Giants have Rick Sutcliffe facing the Expos and Scott Bankhead.

I led off the bottom of the 1st by grounding out to Bankhead.

I next came up with one out in the 3rd and grounded out to Pedro Guerrero at 1st.

Rick didn't give up any hits until the 4th, but then he gave up three straight singles, to score Guerrero.

Expos lead 1-0

Scott Garrelts takes over to start the 5th. Mike Devereaux scored on a Shane Mack sac fly.

Expos lead 2-0

I came up in the 5th with one out and Brian Giles on 1st. Mark Tindall was on the mound. I hit it to Chris Sabo at 3rd for a fielder's choice. More concerning is the collision of Giles at 2nd. They took him out of the game for precautionary measures. Hopefully he is just shaken up.
Mike Aldrete walks, moving me to 2nd. We are left.

We get word that Brian has a sore elbow and it shouldn't have any lasting issues.

In the 6th Ruben Sierra doubles and scores on a Robby Thompson single.

Expos lead 2-1

I am lifted for a pinch hitter in the 7th.

We managed to tie it up in the 8th but gave up two runs in the 9th for a 4-2 loss.

I went 0 for 3.

March 2nd, 1988

My parents decided to make a trip to Arizona to see a couple of games. It is my dad's birthday tomorrow so it is kind of his present.

Today we are playing Len Damian and the Braves.

The Giants are pitching Eric Show.

But... I am not starting today. An NRI named Tim Naehring is getting a shot.

I came in as a pinch hitter for Eric to lead off the 5th. There was still no score. Damian walked me. I stole 2nd. I went to 3rd on a groundout by Mike Aldrete and then scored on a single by John Rabb.

So we were up 1-0, but that was in for me. I was a spectator for the rest as we won 5-0.

March 3rd, 1988

It is my dad's birthday and hopefully we can have a good game for him.

Bruce Ruffin is pitching for the Giants against Erik Hanson and the Phillies.

I got the second out of the game, catching a pop up by Walt Weiss.
I then caught a liner from Bo Jackson for the 3rd.

I led off the home half by popping up to Alfredo Griffin at 2nd.
Mike Aldrete followed with a home run.

Giants lead 1-0

I made a nice play on a Mike LaValliere grounder for the 3rd out in the 2nd.

I led off the bottom of the 3rd by grounding out to Weiss at short.
But Mike walked and Ruben Sierra knocked a to run homer.

Giants lead 3-0

I took a grounder from Jackson for a fielder's choice, 2nd out in the 4th. I then handled a Von Hayes grounder for the 3rd out.

Scott Service took over on the mound in the 5th. he ended up allowing LaValliere to cross after a wild pitch and a passed ball.

Giants lead 3-1

I came up with one out in the 5th, now facing John Cerutti. I grounded out to Weiss again.

In the 7th LaValliere crossed on a Tim Raines double. Scott got the hook after that and Jim went to Mike Perez. He ended up giving up a three-run homer to Gralyn Engram.

Phillies lead 5-3

I was lifted for a pinch hitter in the 7th.

We ended up losing 6-5.

I went 0 for 3. I have yet to get a hit this spring.

It is the last day in town for my parents. We are playing Tom Browning and the Reds.

The Giants have Frank Viola on the mound.

I led off the home half by taking a seven pitch walk. I went to 2nd on a wild pitch. I went to 3rd on a passed ball. None of that mattered as Chili Davis launched a one out home run.

Giants lead 2-0

I got the 3rd out in the 2nd, taking a Tim McIntosh grounder.

The Reds got on the board in the 3rd when Al Newman crossed on a Will Clark single.

Giants lead 2-1

I led off the bottom of the 3rd by putting one down the left field line for a double. Finally! My first hit of the spring. And I got to do it in front of my folks. With two out I stole 3rd but was not able to score.

I got the 2nd out in the 4th off a Fred Manrique grounder.

In the 4th Robby Thompson scored on a Steve Stanicek single.

Giants lead 3-1

Mike Griffin took over pitching for us in the 5th.

I came up with one out in the bottom half, with William Brennan now pitching for the Reds. I struck out.

Kal Daniels led off the 6th with a homer. Five batters later Dave Parker hit a pinch hit, three-run shot off a visibly exhausted Mike. Why did Jim push him like that?
After that, Jim brought in John Burkett.

Reds lead 5-3

I left the game in the 7th.

There was no more scoring.

I went 1 for 2 with a double, a walk, a run scored, and a stolen base.

I went out for dinner with the family afterwards, so they could hear me gripe about the new skipper.
I am sure I will get used to him, but he is no Nestor.

The Giants have Rick Sutcliffe going against Dwight Gooden and the Mets.

I opened the game by striking out.
Mike Aldrete followed me with a home run.

Giants lead 1-0

In the 2nd Bob Brenly doubled and scored on a Chris Brown single.

Giants lead 2-0

I got the 1st out in the bottom of the 2nd, catching a floater by Wally Joyner.
Hubie Brooks scored on a Gooden double, but Greg Olson was thrown out at the plate.

Giants lead 2-1

I led off the 3rd by grounding out to Gooden.

In the 4th both Darryl Strawberry and Joyner scored on a Mel Hall double.

Mets lead 3-2

I came up in the 5th with one out and Chili Davis on 1st. Edward Bass was now pitching. I flew out to Hall in left.

Hot-shot minor league prospect Al Leiter took over on the mound for us.

In the 6th Hall scored on a Dave Magadan single.

Mets lead 4-2

I was lifted for a pinch hitter in the 7th.

There was no further scoring.

I went 0 for 3 and am hitting a big fat .077 for the spring so far.

Today we've got the Padres. They are pitching Mark Langston while the Giants have Eric Show.

Brian Giles is starting at short.

I entered as a pinch runner for Steve Stanicek in the 8th and scored. I stayed to play short. We were up 4-3 and Mark Davis was pitching for us. Billy Ripken doubled home Lou Frazier in the top of the 9th to tie the game. I got Tony Gwynn out on a Harold Reynolds fielder's choice, but Ripken scored on the play to give the Padres the lead.

Padres lead 5-4

We went 3 up, 3 down in the bottom half and that was the game.

March 7th, 1988

Today we get Moose Haas and the Dodgers. We are pitching John Burkett.

I am back at the top of the lineup.

I led off the game by striking out.

I got the 2nd out off the Dodgers, catching a Franklin Stubbs pop. I then did the same to Candy Maldonado for the 3rd out.

I came up in the 2nd with two out, Robby Thompson on 3rd and Chris Brown on 2nd. I popped out to Dave Anderson at short.

In the 4th Chuck Lynn connected on a three-run moon shot. I took a Steve Sax grounder for the final out if the inning.

Dodgers lead 3-0

I came up with one out in the 5th, now facing Juan Agosto. I struck out again.

Scott Garrelts took over pitching for us in the 5th. In the 6th I got the 2nd out for him, getting former teammate Brian Harper on a fielder's choice by Anderson. Soon after RJ Reynolds hit a three-run homer. I caught a pop by pinch hitter Gene Larkin to end the inning.

Dodgers lead 6-0

Robby led off the 7th with a home run. I left the game for a pinch hitter that inning.

We lost 7-1

I am down to .062 after going 0 for 3.

I led off the home half by grounding out to Tom Herr at 2nd.

Rob Deer hit a leadoff home run in the 2nd to open the scoring.

Giants lead 1-0

I made my first defensive play on the leadoff batter in the 3rd, retiring Harris on a groundout.

I led off in the bottom of the 3rd by grounding out to Herr again.

I caught a fly by Jose Uribe for the 2nd out in the 4th.

Mike Perez took over pitching for us in the 5th.

I came up with two out in the 5th, now facing Bob Kipper, and I walked. I got no further.

Today the Giants have Frank Viola taking on Tim Englund and the Pirates.

The Pirates scored on the 1st when Bip Roberts led off with a triple and then scored on a one out single by Johnny Ray.

Pirates lead 1-0

I led off the home half by grounding out to Paul Zuvella at short.
With two out Chili Davis walked and then scored on a Ruben Sierra double. Ruben scored on a Rob Deer single.

Giants lead 2-0

I led off in the 3rd and I grounded out to Zuvella again.
I am 1 for 20.
Robby Thompson followed me with a home run.

Giants lead 3-1

Mark Clear came in to pitch in the 5th.

I led off in the bottom of the 5th and grounded out to Ray at 2nd.
1 for 21
We unloaded that inning, scoring seven times and hitting around, but my next time up I was lifted for a pinch hitter.

We ended up winning 11-1

I am hitting .048

This is terrible. I don't think I am in danger of losing my spot, but I am also clearly not ready for the season. I need to turn things around.

Rick Sutcliffe and The Giants are facing Scott Terry and the Reds.

But they are doing it without me... at least to start. I have an off day. Brian Giles is playing short.

While trailing 3-2, I came in as a pinch hitter in the top of the 7th. There was one out and Chris Brown was on 1st. I singled. The Brad Wellman pinch hit and Chris sand I first moved up on a wild pitch and then Brad singles, scoring Chris. I tried to also score but was throw out.

Game tied 3-3

I stayed in to play short. Mike Perez was pitching but AL Leiter took over in the 8th.

I came up in the 9th with one out and Greg Litton on 2nd. John Franco was pitching... but not to me. I was given the intentional walk. I t was the right move as they got the next two guys out.

I made a great play on the first batter of the bottom of the 9th, forcing Ron Tingley into a groundball out. I then made an easier play on Curt Wilkerson for the 3rd out, sending us to extras.

In the top of the 10th Jessie Reid got a pinch hit double, scoring both John Rabb and Pete Carey.

Giants lead 5-3

Mark Clear came in two shut things down and while he struck out two, he also gave up a double and a walk. I handled a Felix Jose grounder for the 3rd out to end the game.

IN two plate appearances I got a single and a walk. I am now hitting .143. Still too low but trending in the right direction.

Today John Burkett and the Giants are taking on Ed Wojna and the Padres.

I opened the game by pushing one through the right side for a single. Then I stole 2nd. I moved to 3rd on a single by Mike Aldrete. Chili Davis walked to load them up with none out. Two infield flies and a strikeout later... we got nothing.

The Padres also loaded the base sin the 1st but then Randy Ready scored on a Carmelo Martinez fielder's choice. I took an Ozzie Guillen roundball to stop things there.

Padres lead 1-0

I came up in the 2nd with two out and John Rabb on 1st. I grounded out to Ready at 3rd.

In the 3rd Ready hit a solo bomb.

Padres lead 2-0

I got the 1st out in the bottom of the 4th off a grounder by Martinez. We then made a nice Thompson - Priske - Aldrete double play to get Guillen and Junior Felix.

I came up with one out in the 5th, now facing Kimiyasu Kudo. I hit on to Ready again, but he wasn't himself and picked up the error. Mike hit into a fielder's choice and I went and sat down.

Butch Henry took over pitching for us in the 5th.

I was lifted for a pinch hitter in the 7th.

We lost 2-0.

I went 1 for 3 with a single and a stolen base. My average is up to .171

Willie Fraser and the Giants are facing Moose Haas and the Dodgers.

I get in on the action quickly, grabbing a grounder of the leaded man, Steve Sax, for the out.
The Dodgers got ton eh boar din the 1st, with Kent Hrbek scoring on a Tim Wallach double.

Dodgers lead 1-0

I led off the home half by grounding out to Wallach at 3rd. Haas had to leave after that. He was favouring his back. Tim Scott relieved and gave spa s ingle to Mike Aldrete and a home run to Chili Davis.

Giants lead 2-1

In the 2nd I started a Priske - Thompson - Aldrete double play to get Brian Harper and Dave Anderson. After that, though, Brian Deak scored on a double by Scott!

Game tied 2-2

I led off the bottom of the 3rd by dropping one into centre for a single. I stole 2nd (my 10th of the spring). I tried to score on a single by Mike but was thrown out by Harper.

In the 4th Candy Maldonado scored on a sac fly by Deak.

Dodgers lead 3-2

Goose Gossage came in to pitch for us in the 5th. An out and a single later and Gossage was out of the game - also due to back issues. (Later I heard that he said he would be fine.) Scott Service took over. We cleaned things up with a Thompson - Priske - Aldrete double play.

I led off in the 5th, still facing Scott, and took a four pitch walk. One out later, new pitcher Larry McWilliams walked Chili. What next? Double steal! I scored on a sac fly by Robby Thompson.

Game tied 3-3

In the 6th Steve Stanicek scored on a groundout by pinch hitter Mackey Sasser. (He is here as an NRI.)
I was then lifted for a pinch hitter as well.

We ended up winning 5-4.

I went 1 for 2 with a single, a run scored, and two stolen bases.
My average is up to .186
