BABIP take into account def?
I assume BABIP makes up a component of stuff/move/control.
So would a rating take into account the teams def? ie I pitcher with .260 BABIP with crappy defense would seem like they should get a higher rating? |

Stuff is K%
Control is BB% Movement combination of GB% and HR/FB%, or basically, HRA%. There really is no BABIP stat. BABIP is just a stat that indicates how often a ball put in play against that pitcher goes for a hit. It has *nothing* to do with pitcher skill except for 1) pitcher defense (very little), 2) the pitchers groundball% (some) and 3) the pitcher's ability to generate favorable pitch counts (some). BABIP has more to do with defense than pitcher skill, generally. It's almost a reality-check stat, like if a pitcher had a 5.18 ERA but a 347 BABIP you can reasonably infer that it was a lot of bad luck; if a pitcher has a 2.18 ERA but a 247 BABIP you can infer that he's probably worse than his ERA. It is my understanding that the pitching profile (ie groundball vs extreme flyball vs everything else) significantly affects a pitcher's BABIP. This appears to have a greater affect than any amount of defense does, good or bad. This will also lower certain defensive statistics such as Defensive Efficiency.
