It is go time, the deals are done the roster are set (at least for now) and now it is time to throw out that first pitch and get the season going. I have a lot of faith in these guys and I feel like good things are coming. Really not much more to say, I just want to get this season going and hopefully all my nerves will be gone and we will show that we really are players in 2038.

A quick note about our opening day starting lineup, it consists of only 3 players that were on the team last season. 2 new free-agents, a rookie and 3 players from trades. Hopefully, that means good things. We did have a powerful offense last year, it will be interesting to see how this year goes.

Lets do this.

GM Notes:
I have to say the first week was a pleasant surprised. I am not sure what I was expecting, but this was a little more than that. However, it did show me a few things I need to keep my eyes on... first our starting rotation, they weren't overly impressive this first week. More than two months till Shepherd is back. Our offense, did you see those LOB numbers? That isn't very impressive for an offense that hit .290+ for the week. We have to plate more runners. I guess you can look at that two ways. a) we aren't getting hits when we need them or b) we are getting people on base and that will mean more runs in the future. We will see how it goes... And finally, the defense. What was that? I will have to dig around some more to see what is going on and if I need to make changes.

Our defensive stats don't look too bad, so maybe that efficiency number will climb. Some defensive stats to keep an eye on. Back-up catcher Raul Garcia has thrown out 3 of 4 baserunnres. Jose Matos hasn't seen anyone steal against him yet. Byung-ho Ch'on is off to a solid start despite making an error in his first 13 changes. Chris Mildmay might be our SS for a while, showing 19 assists, 12 put-outs and 10 double-plays in his first 7 games. These guys look pretty solid... Just those 6-errors, by 6-different players doesn't look too good right now.

A big offensive concern of mine heading into this season was Tully Maxwell and his strikeouts. Last season he struck out 168 times in 576 plate appearances, which is 29% of his AB's. I would like to see him cut that back and raise his average. This year he is right back at with 10 K's in his first 26 PA's on the year, for a whopping 38.5% K ratio. Yikes. After the first week he is hitting .357 on balls put in play, so I need my hitting coach Albert Briggs to work some magic with him.

Not much else to say about the first week. We are off to a solid start and I just hope we can carry this momentum throughout the month. One thing we have had issues doing is winning early, so if we can jump out and get off to a hot start this could mean a better season in the long run. Fingers crossed this is just the beginning.

Transactions:
Placed LF Bo Keller on irrevocable waivers.
Traded 32-year-old left fielder Bo Keller to the Norfolk Cavaliers, getting 28-year-old reliever Jorge Montaño in return.
Placed RP Jorge Montaño on irrevocable waivers.
RP Jorge Montaño cleared waviers and was Demoted to Triple A San Juan.

Demoted RF Damian Winfield to Triple A San Juan.
Purchased the contract of 2B Eugene Todd from Triple A San Juan.

Winfield didn't play during the first 2 weeks of the season so I decided to bring up Todd from AAA (after hitting .419-3-13 in his first 12 games) and send Winfield down to get some more swings. Todd will DH and play 1B, DH and LF while with the big club. The problem is we don't have any OF subs with only 4 full-time OF'ers on the roster and all of them in the starting line-up. Not sure how this will go over, but I will keep an eye on mood and tiredness.

Injuries:
SS Jose Ayala, Torn ankle ligaments, 2-3 months, 60-day DL
MR Francisco Franco, Sore shoulder, Uncertain, 11-day DL
SP Robert Shepherd, Unknown injury, 8-weeks, 11-day DL
CL Tim Meyers, Mild calf strain, 4-days, DtD

Other/Roster News:

GM Notes:
And this is what I get for being so positive. I guess that is what happens when you run into one of the games hottest teams, as the Clippers just dominated us the whole series. We looked bad and that makes me wonder if I am in trouble this season or if my team is just not ready yet, or if there is something wrong with this team. But we were pwnd by the Clippers pitchers.

We committed 5 more errors this week, bringing us up to 11 E's on the season. Ambrose Gutierrez and Juan Guzman leading the way with 2-each.. both are decent fielders, but maybe playing multiple positions and part-time is effecting them. I don't know, but I don't like this shady defense. You can't win without a decent D and if we don't get our efficiency up to .700 soon I may need to make something happen.

I am getting worried about the bullpen, Robinson gets hurt for a bit, Meyers goes down again, even if it is for a DtD and Franco who is supposed to be my set-up man can't seem to shake this sore shoulder. Then on top of the injuries they really aren't doing that good of a job. You take out Gus James (11.2 IP, 0.77 ERA), Eric Harmon (6.0 IP, 1.50 ERA) and Dani Rubio (4.1 IP, 0.0 ERA) we aren't showing our greatness. I may need to take over the pitching staff and move James and Rubio into more prominent roles. Get Meyers and his 9.82 ERA out of the closer role until he can get back on track.

Well lets see two weeks into the season we have had a high week, going 5-2 and winning a series 4 to 1 against the Brewers and 3 of 4 against the Sixteens... and we have had lows, going 2-5, and getting swept by the Clippers 5 to 0! One thing about the Clippers is they have a solid pitching staff and they shut our offense down. And we left a lot of runners on base, that is becoming the key, if we get on base, we have to get them in. We have the offense that we should be able to do that. Based on what I saw in the first week of the season we should be ok moving forward.

We go up against the Blue Hens and the Iron Pigs this week, both division rivals so we better get our game together and get some W's on the board. I will get over our sweep by the Clippers if we can get some W's up on the board this week.

Dover Generals: Lost 3B Pedro Velasquez for 5-months. Velasquez tore a back muscle this week.
Christiana Blue Hens: SS Jim Shelton went 5 for 5 during a 14-3 drubbing of the Harrington Ponies. Shelton is now hitting .308 on the season.

SP Robert Shepherd, Unknown injury, 7-weeks, 11-day DL

Other/Roster News:
Its not only rough in Chadds Ford its also rough in our minor league system.
AAA San Juan Hibiscus: 11-7 .611, -2.5 (3rd)
AA Pierre Jackrabbits: 8-6 .471, -3 (4th)
A Tulsa Roughnecks: 9-8 .529 (1st)
SA Wilmington (NC) Tides: 7-12 .368, -5 (9th)

GM Notes:
Breath... slowly... in... out... deep breaths... you can handle this, it isn't the end... we are only 3-weeks into the season... 141 games remain... you are better than this... the team is better than this... it is ok... teams slump... 1-9 in the last 10 isn't the end... its ok... your pitching is better than this... you know... in... out... deep breaths...

24.92, 11.25, and 6.14... what are those? Those are the ERA's during last week of my numbers 1, 2 and 3 starters!!! Not my # 4 and 5, but the top guys, the ones that are supposed to be ones that break us out of the losing streaks. I am hoping they can get back in gear. Still a long time to go till Shepherd is healthy. Ying-Hua Ji (17/18, 12/13, 15/16), John Robertson (13/14, 12/12, 16/17) and Gregorio Costello (15/15, 12/12, 11/12), they should better.

My defense is still falling a part on me, Tully Maxwell has a .943 FPct with 3 E's, Ambrose Gutierrez has a .953 FPct with 2 E's, Juan Guzman has a .833 FPct and 2 errors... Jose Matos has throwing 4 of 19 runners (21%) and Raul Garcia 4 of 7 (57%) makes me wonder if I need to make some defense changes.

As of now our a manager and possible our bench coach are on the hot seat. Patterson has lead this team 2 two straight playoff appearances, but this year things to be slowing down. The teams chemistry has gone from 'happy' to 'unhappy' and a lot of that has to do with losing. We need to get our team going and get W's on the board... One thing about Patterson that is of note is there are 8 players he has good relationships with and 8 he doesn't. That is rough... not sure, however, if there is a better option out there.

The question is when do I starting making moves and when I do make them what do I do? Bring up from the minors? Pull off a big trade? Redo the lineup? Fire the coaching staff and start over? Wait it out till Shepherd is back and hope he really is that good... So many questions, and I am the one that needs to come up with some answers...

Chadds Ford Cannons, Cardinals Agree to Trade

Chadds Ford Cannons, Cardinals Agree to Trade: A trade between Chadds Ford and Richmond was made official this morning. The Cannons have sent 22-year-old minor league RF Damian Winfield and a 3rd round draft pick to the Cardinals in exchange for 25-year-old minor league SS Rhett McIntosh and a 2nd round draft pick.

-----------

This may not look like a huge deal, but Winfield wasn't developing like I had hoped (over the years) and he was a trouble maker on the clubhouse. So I dealt him to nip that at the bud. In return I get second baseman/shortstop with good speed and a solid glove. He was sent to the DL to heal (groin tightness) and will join our AAA once he is healthy. If the defense continues to go down hill you may see him up with the big club sooner than later.

I did trade a draft pick, but I did move up in the order so I am ok with it. I think I know have 2-1st round and 2-2nd round picks.

Rhett McIntosh:
CON: 9/10, Power: 5/5, Eye: 11/13
He was hitting .250-06 with 6 steals in 7 attempts in AAA before he got hurt.

Chadds Ford Skipper Patterson Blasts Media Over Bad Press

Chadds Ford Skipper Patterson Blasts Media Over Bad Press:
Cannons manager, Bill Patterson, had some choice words for the Chadds Ford media today. "Whatever happened to journalistic integrity?" the Cannons skipper asked during a live radio interview. "No one cares about reporting the facts anymore. It's all about sensationalism these days. All you guys care about is selling newspapers and driving up ratings. And I'm getting pretty damn sick of it." Patterson seemed to be referring to recent stories that have suggested the Cannons struggles as of late have been the result of off-field distractions.

One article, which accuses Mikel Wallstreet of numerous "extracurricular indiscretions", has been a particularly sore subject for Patterson. "What players do on their own time is their business, but to imply that any of my players aren't giving it their all on the field is absolutely ridiculous," Patterson said, "and to make these kinds of accusations against someone without any proof is just plain irresponsible!"

Team officials had no comment when asked about Patterson's remarks.

----

This is not the news you want to hear surrounding your team during an awful stretch of games... it is painful to lose games and now this... Is change in the air?? CF? Manager??

PS: Funny thing is Wallstreet is a Mike Trout import and I am pretty sure this is the last thing you'd ever hear about Trout...

April 2038 - In Review

Players of the Month - April 2038

Delaware Conference

Montoya Wins Best Bat Trophy in April: When Lorenzo Montoya stepped up to the plate in April he did it with confidence, and today he was honored with the Delaware Conference Batter of the Month award. The young Christiana right fielder posted a .367 batting average with 12 home runs, 28 RBIs and scored 24 runs. Montoya also worked pitchers for 11 walks to post a .438 on-base percentage.

April's #1 Hurler Announced: Washington: Veteran Bryan Washington put together quite a successful stretch in April for the Christiana Blue Hens, earning himself the Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award. Washington racked up a 5-0 record in 5 starts, posting a 1.85 ERA over 34 innings and striking out 42.

Delaware Conference Names Rookie of Month: Jim Shelton earned April's Rookie of the Month honors in the Delaware Conference for last month's performance. The boyish Christiana shortstop might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level. Shelton hit .343 with 2 home runs, 8 RBIs and 23 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award.

MarVa Conference

Matt McNeill Winner in MarVa Conference: Matt McNeill battered MarVa Conference pitchers all April and wound up taking home the Batter of the Month Award. "I've been around DELMARVA Baseball League long enough to know you really have to work hard day in and day out to be able to put up this kind of consistency," the 28-year-old McNeill told reporters. "I put in a lot of work, even on the days I might not take the field, and it's always nice when everything comes together for me like it did this last month." In 25 games, McNeill hit .324 with 11 home runs, 30 RBIs and scored 23 runs.

MV Conf Selects Rivera April's Best Starter: César Rivera hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice. In April the Virginia Beach starter earned a 4-1 mark in 5 starts. He threw 35.1 innings, struck out 34 and compiled a solid 2.29 ERA.

MV Conf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Youngster Rodney Hunter emerged as the latest MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Ellicott City deserved the honor, batting .382 with 2 home runs and 7 RBI. Is the month of April a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Hunter enjoy the limelight.

Other/Roster News:

GM Notes:
Remember those days when we went 5-2 to start the season, had a player win Player of the Week? Man they seem so long ago. I sure hope we can get back to those days again, because as we keep moving forward this season we are falling behind... and the more we fall behind the harder it is going to be to catch-up.

I am at a crossroads here. Do I let them play and see what happens, do I pull off a big deal... I am not sure, but these guys just aren't playing up to their caliber yet. I would say I need a starting pitcher, but the ones that are truly struggling are my top 3, especially John Robertson. He has pretty much lost it from last season: 8-11 3.28 to 1-2 8.64... do I demote him and see if he can't get his game back on track? He is much better than what he is doing.

The bullpen is finally coming around. Meyers has found his groove, Rubio, Davis and Robinson are doing better, and James and Harmon have been lights out. I know a 2.whatever ERA isn't going to happen for the season, but its been a nice surprise and very much needed during this current state.

When I am slumping and made a lot of moves in the off-season I like to look back and see what I am missing. Maybe those deals really did cost me. I did deal away four pretty big players:
Matt Douglas (Cavaliers): .247-0-3, 24 G
Jonathan Loeffler (Cavaliers): 0-2 1.74, SV, 10 G, 0.68 WHIP (Closing, moved Miguel Angel Gonzalez to SU)
Julio Casanes (Royals): .253-4-16
Nobukasu Higashi (Generals): 2 GS, 0-1 1.17, Shoulder Inflammation DL 7-more weeks

Well, looking at this I am not sure it would really have made a difference. I think the big problem is that our pitching staff leader, Robert Shepherd, is out. I need him back, sooner than later. I just have to hang on for a little while longer.

Byung-ho Ch'on had a great start, but has quickly cooled down. He is now hitting only .235-0-6, with 19 hits, 11 of them coming in the first week! I am not sure what his problem is, but the little snowflake next to him name better go away soon. I need his bat and speed to win some games... My other starting rookie, Jose Matos, is hitting .243-2-6. He isn't doing what I had hoped, but he is doing ok. I am not sure if I am ready to switch him out, but if he doesn't start driving in some runs I may need to make a move. Emilio Alba is hitting .276-3-18 in AAA. Maybe its time to see what he can do?

I am hesitant on pulling off a big deal right now. I think the hot first week still has me thinking. Maybe I am crazy, maybe not, but I think we can right this ship and still have a shot at the playoffs. This season isn't over yet, and maybe with the right move internally we can make some noise.

One player I am watching closely is my #1 pick from 2035, Otto Carillio. Last season in AAA he hit .305-17-114 with 31 steals and this year he isn't too far off hitting .320-1-18 with 3 steals, on pace for .320-7-120, 20 season. Problem is he strikes out to much (pace 200). He is supposed to develop more patience, but I may need to him sooner than later. A fast guy who can play 7 positions? Hmm... If he keeps this up he will be with us soon (I think)... Brad Sims (.353-1-4 / 17 AB's) and Juan Guzman (.385-1-1 / 26 AB's) are on the short list.

After back-to-back 1 win weeks, we won 2 last week... now it is time to build on that and win three this week.

Washington Senators: Lost 3B John Minor (.279-4-9) for 7-weeks. The 23-year-old was diagnosed with a concussion.

Fed Up With Losing, Jonathan Falsyde Snaps:
After another bad loss by his Ports today Jonathan Falsyde, was not a happy camper. Specifically, he took his frustrations out on his teammate, Milton Colter, getting into an "animated" argument in the clubhouse. "It's his fault we're losing ballgames," said Falsyde about Colter. "I was just trying to let him know that he needs to play better, and he took offense to it." Ports manager Dave Murphy commented, saying that "boys will be boys," and continued by saying, "things like this happen when we don't win."

Transactions:
Placed SS Brad Sims on the 11-day disabled list.
Purchased the contract of CF Lorenzo Leal from Triple A San Juan.
Demoted SS Rhett McIntosh to Triple A San Juan.
Placed RP Dustin McNeil on the 60-day disabled list.

Injuries:
SS Jose Ayala, Torn ankle ligaments, 8 weeks, 60-day DL
SP Robert Shepherd, Unknown injury, 5-weeks, 60-day DL
SS Brad Sims, strained PCL, 5-weeks, 11-day DL
MR Dustin McNeil, torn UCL, 12-months, 60-day DL

McNeil is the 8th rated prospect in our system, and he was pretty much ready to m ake the bigs. He went 2-1 4.18 in 5 AAA starts. I wish him the best in his long recovery back. That torn UCL injury scares me some. With his 12-stamina the chances he returns are started will dwindle. He won the Golden Arm Award last in AAA and was a top 50 prospect last season.

Other/Roster News:

GM Notes:
The official draft order was released and I have to say I am fairly please with how it turned out for us. In the first round we have picks #3 and #24, in the second round we have picks #12, 24, and 25, and then in the third round #26... and that is our first 5-rounds. Can't complain there. Time to start rebuilding those low minors.

A strong week against some poor competition... I can only hope this will get our confidence up and we can start putting together some W's against the better competition as well. Pitching looked good, starters and relievers, hitters crushed the ball... defense was still shaky. Chris Mildmay my shortstop has great fielding ratings (including 19 error) at SS but he is just struggling this season. Last year he committed 10 errors, this season he already has 5, in 100 fewer games. He needs to get his head back into it. I need his ZR back up to the positive (-0.5) and his efficiency should be over 1 (.988). He is our leader on D and he needs to start showing it.

Looks like our manager Bill Paterson is getting fed up with Tully Maxwell's play. He has been regulated to back-up third baseman for the time being. Maxwell is hitting .235-2-9 with 25 K's in 92 PA's, and taking over for him will be Eugene Todd who is hitting .321-5-12 with only 5 K's in his 60 PA's... can't really blame him for making this move, but I do hope to see Maxwell back in the lineup soon. Maybe I should have let him develop some more in the minors... however I am not sure what this is going to do for the defense. Maxwell is better at 3B, and Todd is better at 1B. So that means both slots will be down a little. Something to keep an eye on I reckon.

On the bright side, with our opponents current records, we do not play an winning team the rest of this month. This month could be our month to make some big noise. There are two teams the Braves and the Colonials that are 1 or 2 games away from .500, but we have the ability to wreck shop. If we can continue to play the we have to start this month... momentum and chemistry needs to be on our side.

I can't wait for Shepherd to return... I just hope he hasn't lost much.

MR Gus James, tired arm, DtD/tired arm/2-weeks, 11-day Dl
1B Naofumi Ohayashi, DtD/strained hamstring/3-weeks, 11-day DL

Gus James is pretty much done for the time being. He is "fragile" and it is starting to show. He has had a great start to the season, but he recently has found problems staying healthy... for Ohayashi he is going on the 11-day DL and I will reevaluate then he is only Moderate, but that will add up. I don't want him to go down bigger more than that.

Other/Roster News:

GM Notes:
We are playing well, but so is everyone else. We can't gain games when the leaders of the pact are playing well. Last week they were only 5-5, they being Christiana and Wilmington. I don't feel like either one of these teams are as good as they are playing, but you never know. Sometimes fire strikes and when that does there is nothing you can do about it.

The offense has picked it up the past couple of weeks. I wonder if that means we are going to be one of those teams that can hit good pitching, but just can't handle bad pitching. I sure hope not. I am still shocked at how poor we played during the first month, despite playing better teams, there really isn't an excuse for what we looked like.

I am sort of concerned by our starting pitching. They do seem to be finding a groove a little, but I am thinking my scout might have over rated them... I shopped Gregorio around a while back and there was very little interest for him... maybe we just need Shepherd back so we have that true #1 who will be able to lead by example. I am just not sure. But Ying-Hua Ji needs to pick things up, he needs to pitch like the ace he is. He struggled last year to start the season, so I am hoping this is all that is happening this year. I just hope this isn't one of those cases where its struggle before injury...

Our offense was on fire this week. I hope this was our offense breaking out of their shell. If we can do half this good every week we will be in great shape to make some big noise this season. I like this team, I really do. I feel good about the players I put together. I am just nervous we aren't gelling and that will be a problem over the long haul.

On to another week... and we need W's. I am hoping our offense can continue hitting like we have been and score some runs... and then our starting pitching need to get their ERA's down. We aren't going to get very far with our #1 and #2 pitchers with ERA's over 5.30. To win our division or even make the playoffs we will need to 1) get our starters ERA down (4.79) and get our team's defense efficiency (.660). One thing I have always taken pride with is defense. I may have to go back over all the teams I have had to see what my lowest team defense eff has been (I did a quick look at the stats not sure I can see that info).

Lets get the W's.

Other/Roster News:
According to my scout I have 16 or 17 players ready in AAA to make the jump to the bigs. That gives me some faith in the future here. However they are only 23-21 so I am not sure how "good" they really are.

GM Notes:
Well we are doing what we need to do this month, beating the teams we should be beat. I am hoping however that this is more than just us being a decent team, beating up the poor teams. I am hoping this is a us a good team finding our groove. That 9-16 record to start the year was just an awful way to start the year.

Our starters seem to be coming around. I am wondering if my spring training plan isn't good enough... maybe I am missing the balance between not enough innings and too many innings. Or maybe my whole staff is just slow starting. I am hoping the youngsters John Robertson, Gehrig Pearl and Juan Cuesta continue to throw well, and get better. I like these 3 kids and at one point they all had huge talent.

So we are playing well and I want to finish this month strong... and look who we are facing off against, those pesky Beacons. They are my arch rival and for some reason not matter how good or bad they are I just can't seem to win a series from them. Maybe this is the year.

I am hoping Mikel Wallstreet can stay healthy this season, for two reasons. One he has had a string of injuries during his career and I would like to see him excel, and two I won't be able to afford him next season so the better the season he has the better return I will get for my buck. Fingers crossed.

One thing that bothers me about this team is I have spent the past 7+ years here trying to build a contender and last season I thought that was 'our' season... then I blew up the team and made some changes and figured this was our year. The predictions come in and we are predicted to second. You work hard, you make the best moves you can (or think you can) and sometimes they work out and sometimes they don't. I never thought I'd be here in Chadds Ford this long... and now here we are winning and I am feeling good. I just hope this isn't a false streak. I know we can win it all this season. I feel it. Shepherd will be back soon and if we can hold on he just might be able to put us over the top. I am going to keep doing what I do, and keep dreaming. But Chadds Ford is getting old, and there isn't anything more than I want to bring a title to this town.

Transactions:
Placed RP Dani Rúbio on the 11-day disabled list, retroactive to 05/24/2038.
Purchased the contract of RP Gus James from Triple A San Juan.

James is back from the DL so he got the call and Franco who was one of the late cuts out of spring training due to his performance is back. I am leery about this move only because of his 0-1 7.71 stat line in AAA. Fingers crossed.

Injuries:
MR Dani Rubio, Calf strain, 2-weeks, 11-day DL
SS Jose Ayala, Torn ankle ligaments, 5 weeks, 60-day DL
MR Dustin McNeil, torn UCL, 11- months, 60-day DL
SP Robert Shepherd, Unknown injury, 2-weeks, 60-day DL
SP Gehrig Pearl, Forearm stiffness, 4-days, 11-day DL
SS Brad Sims, strained PCL, 1-2 weeks, 11-day DL
1B Naofumi Ohayashi, DtD/strained hamstring/1-2 weeks, 11-day DL

This list keeps on growing... Rubio did this too me last season too, but when he came back he was a much better pitcher so hopefully that will happen at down as well, he will be put on the DL and will miss two starts. He has picked it up lately and his now 4-4 3.68 in his 10 starts. He was finding his groove, bad timing for him. Now who gets the call... Peterson is going to give Gallin Krall the start in place of Pearl. Krall has pitched in 9 big-league games and none as as starter. He has been great out of the pen this season (1-1 1.04, 3 G) in limited time, but hopefully thats a good sign.

Other/Roster News:

GM Notes:
We took the series from the Beacons, which was nice, but then we turned around and got shut-out. I really shouldn't feel to bad about that, as Fareles is on fire right now. But the W's are keeping us going and moved us into a tie for first and the 2nd wild card. I want a playoff birth this season. I don't care how I get in I just want to get in. We are built for 2038, and if we can keep up playing like this we can make some noise. Again, hoping this great month isn't a false positive based on level of competition.

The injuries are starting to pile up, and I am wondering if I am being a little to jump with the DL. Ohayashi is DtD did he deserve the DL? Pearl, out 6-days DL? I don't know, I am ruling on side of caution when it comes to this. I would rather the short injury not turn into anything major.

We went 4-2 this week and our offense wasn't overly 'on it' this week. And guess what, that makes me feel good. If we can win, when the offense isn't slugging the ball all over the place, we are ahead of the game. I would rather these guys crush the ball, that always makes me breathe easier. But the W's are nice as well, and much more important.

Three extra-inning games this week, what a way to beat up your bullpen... oddly we had two pitches Francisco Franco and Eric Harmon who didn't get into a game. I will never understand how the manager decides who to go with. The guy who threw in 3 games in a row or the week rested guy...

One more game and the month is over. I have to say what a month compared to the first month of the year. Next month is going to a tougher month as we play better competition, including four each against division rivals the Iron Pigs and the Blue Hens. This will be a month that will tell us if we are players or pretenders... and could lead to me making some deals... some deals that fans won't like, but deals that need to be done. I am hoping for a big month, but you just never know.

May 2038 - In Review

Players of the Month - May 2038

Delaware Conference

Wallstreet Takes Home DE Conf Top Batter Award: Mikel Wallstreet may be much younger than other hitters in the Delaware Conference, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in May to win the Batter of the Month award. The 22-year-old Chadds Ford center fielder hit .360 with 7 home runs, 34 RBIs and 26 runs scored. This year Wallstreet is batting .310 with 9 home runs and 45 RBIs.

Brock Top DE Conf Pitcher in May: Veteran Chris Brock put together quite a successful stretch in May for the Georgetown Sixteens, earning himself the Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award. Brock racked up a 5-1 record in 6 starts, posting a 2.25 ERA over 44 innings and striking out 44. This year Brock has worked 75.1 innings with 62 strikeouts en route to a 7-3 record and a 2.27 ERA.

DE Conf Selects Rookie Star of the Month: Clemente Lucarelli's eyes seem to light up whenever he sees the baseball. The young Newark left fielder has been hitting everything in sight for the better part of a month. In May he was voted the Rookie of the Month Award. During the month he hit .350 with 3 doubles, 4 triples and 2 home runs. Lucarelli also scored 13 times and drove in 8 runs. So far on the season Lucarelli is hitting .318 with 4 home runs, 19 RBIs and 19 runs scored. He has 63 hits and played in 46 games.

MarVa Conference
Fujimoto Wins MV Conf's Best Bat Award: Yasushi Fujimoto made his presence known as one of the best young stars in the MarVa Conference this past month. The Norfolk Cavaliers first baseman shined through the month of May and has won the Batter of the Month award. The 25-year-old hit .325 with 11 home runs, 22 RBIs and 22 runs scored. In his stats this season, Fujimoto has posted a batting average of .304 with 70 hits in 230 at-bats, 18 home runs and 39 RBIs. He has also scored 39 runs, walked 12 times and compiled a .343 OBP.

MV Conf Pitcher of the Month Goes to Fuller: Despite the number of years he's been in the league, Earl Fuller still gets excited when he puts together a quality stretch like he had in May. The 30-year-old starter for Richmond was named MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month earlier today. He collected 4 wins and 2 losses with 41 strikeouts in his 6 starts, putting up a fine 1.72 ERA in 47 innings of work. On the year Fuller has compiled a 7-4 mark with a 2.68 ERA.

MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Manuel Vázquez earned May's Rookie of the Month honors in the MarVa Conference for last month's performance. The boyish King George first baseman might be wet behind the ears, but he's proving that he has what it takes to play at this level. Vázquez hit .267 with 4 home runs, 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored this past month on his way to winning the award. For the season, Vázquez is hitting at a .269 clip with 6 home runs, 18 RBIs and has scored 18 runs. He has 42 hits, 5 walks and a .303 on-base percentage.

Drafted SP Matt Bradford in the 2038 first-year player draft (Round 11, Pick 25, 293rd overall pick).
Drafted 2B Roger Morgan in the 2038 first-year player draft (Round 12, Pick 25, 319th overall pick).
Drafted C Jacob Hall in the 2038 first-year player draft (Round 14, Pick 25, 371st overall pick).
Drafted C Kevin Fontenot in the 2038 first-year player draft (Round 15, Pick 25, 397th overall pick).

GM Notes:
Yes I drafted a Wallstreet, best player on the board and me and Alex Elias agreed. The name Wallstreet dates back to my Tony LaRussa days, made it up, probably after watching a movie, and then it has stuck. I recently started renaming draft picks Wallstreet. One thing that has always been the same was the first name had to startt with an M. Not clue why, but there you have it...He is unmodified ratings wise, just his name. All of them are the same expect Mikel who I imported Mike Trout in for... but he should have a bright future ahead.

A lot of people, including my scout think I am crazy drafting Ernie Sampson, but his hitting ratings were just too good to pass up. If, or should I say when, we sign him he will be moved to the offensive side of the field and his pitching days might be numbered. He will either start playing 1B or 3B. I am excited for the prospect of him hitting. I do wish OOTP made it easier for two way players.

Our third round pick Elias wanted in the 1st, but I took Sampson instead. A pure power hitter so I am interested in seeing where his contact goes.... after the Flint Shears picked I let Elias take it the rest of the way... I will always be curious why he picks "Impossible" to sign players.

I am hoping some my draft picks will make it and stay around... we will see.

MR Dustin McNeil, torn UCL, 11- months, 60-day DL
SP Robert Shepherd, Unknown injury, 6-days, 60-day DL
SP Gehrig Pearl, Forearm stiffness, 3-days, 11-day DL
SS Brad Sims, strained PCL, 1-day, 11-day DL
SP Gregorio Costello, Hand soreness, 1-day DtD

Naofumi Ohayashi was activated and placed in the starting lineup. But this is going to pose some issues with the active roster. I am not sure what to do with all these guys that deserve to be here. Krall wasn't supposed to last that long, but now he is my #5 man and doing well. Pearl is just about back, Shepherd will be back after a few AAA starts, Rubio could come back at any moment... then what?

Other/Roster News:
Our second round pick Cristian Reyes is off to a red-hot start in SS-A ball hitting .545-3-5 in his first 4 games.

GM Notes:
We are playing well and have took the lead in our division. I am sold that we are going to win this division yet, but if we can continue to pitch the way we have been we will be in good shape. And with Pearl and Shepherd coming of the DL soon it will make the pitching staff deeper, this will also be quite interesting to see who I have to send down, cut, etc. I really don't know right now.

Part of me is ready to send down Tim Meyers and go with a different closer. He is 10 for 12 in save opportunities, which I can live with, but he is also 0-4 with a 4.81 ERA. However the opponents are hitting .296 against him... so I will have to watch this because I need a closer to close games out even if they aren't save opportunities.

This offense has been very well rounded this season as we are #4 in HR's, #5 in steals and tops in on base percentage in the Delaware Conference. I am not sure we have had an offense this good around here. I wish I could sign all these guys to stay for 5 more seasons, but I know that won't be possible. We have is speed and power all through the lineup and a good mix of lefty and righty bats. This team is going to be one of those teams that other teams aren't going to want to pitch too if we can keep it up.

In 6-days Robert Shepherd will return to the field. Yes it will be in AAA, but he will be back and that is getting me excited. If he can return to his magical form from last season our pitching starting staff will end up being quite tough. Not to mention if Ji and Robertson find their groove. Shepherd took a little hit while he was out, but nothing that should make a huge difference. I am curious to see how many AAA starts he will need to earn his way back up... He will be back before the all-star break. The important thing to note is the break falls after only 72 games. We will have him for more than half the season. That should be a huge boost!

I don't know if we really are this good or just going through a hot streak. But I have to say I am having fun here in Chadds Ford and I am going to enjoy it while it lasts (hopefully through the title game, but I am not holding my breath).

MR Dustin McNeil, torn UCL, 10-111months, 60-day DL

Ch'on was having a decent rookie year hitting .262-1-23 with 18 runs while playing a solid left-field (3 E, +6.4 ZR, .972 FPct)... Robert Shepherd made his first rehab start this week and it wasn't very pretty. He went 5.2 innings giving up 7 htis and 6 runs, including 2 long-balls, while striking out 8. He is known as an extreme flyball pitcher, so the HR's aren't the big concern its the 7 hits.

Other/Roster News:
none

GM Notes:
I can tell we are playing tougher competition, but the good thing is we are still getting some W's. The more W's the better off we are... I like this offense it is a shame I won't be able to keep it in tact for the long haul. I am not sure who I will be able to keep. The sad thing is Eugene Todd is going to be asking for too much money and he is one guy I'd like to keep around. He is my draft pick, an player I watched develop... and soon he will ask for too much money and will be done. I have to figure out a way to keep some of these guys in Chadds Ford or win the title and get out...

The next week and a half should be fun as we take on division rivals the Iron Pigs and the Blue Hens. Both of these teams are doing really well and are trying to track us down. The 4-game series against the Blue Hens will be a fun series and I really hope we can pull this off. I am hoping that maybe the final game of the series we will have one Robert Shepherd back, but we will see. I would like to see him have a solid outing before being called up.

The team is happy now, which is great, since after the first month we were in jeopardy of losing chemistry. Winning really does change everything. We have a few guys who aren't happy, nor sad, but that is going to happen no matter what. This is a fun team, and it is so much nice when we are winning. I do have to say I have been quite surprised by the performance of Eugene Todd. In 41 games he is hitting .354-14-38, however with Oyashi back in the lineup Todd has been playing 3B and it hasn't been great. He has a -3.0 ZR and a .914 FPct. He is a much 1B. This means Tully Maxwell is back on the bench and he is a better defender with a +1.1 ZR and a .966 FPct.

That leads me into my next big concern, our fielding. Out of the 25 players on our active roster we have only 5 that are in the positive of ZR and 9 with a efficiency over 1.000. Those are some bad stats for a GM like me who wants to see better defense across the board. I am not sure however if means I should make some moves or just let it ride, since we are playing so well. I just have this feeling it will come back and haunt me at some point down the road.

We are only 65-games-in so the season is still young... so I am not going to get too excited about this point. We only hold a 2-game lead and a 2.5 game lead over the Blue Hens and Iron Pigs. This week could really prove our worth in the Northern Division. I am worried about this week and our starting pitching. I need them to step it up.

Transactions:
Placed SP Gehrig Pearl on the 11-day disabled list.
Purchased the contract of SP Robert Shepherd from Triple A San Juan.

He's back! Probably a start earlier than I was hoping, but the injury to Pearl mean I had to do something so here he is. He has 2 starts in AAA and threw ok. He went 10.2 innings total, allowing 13 hits and 10 runs, 7 runs in his first. The big stat that jumped out at me was the 4 HR's (2 in each game), but the 16 K's (8 in each game) makes me feel a little better. He is scheduled to start game 1 of the Blue Jays series next week.

Injuries:
MR Dani Rubio, Calf strain, Unknown, Ready*
SS Jose Ayala, Torn ankle ligaments, 1-2 weeks, 60-day DL
MR Dustin McNeil, torn UCL, 10 months, 60-day DL
OF Byung-Ho Ch'on, ruputred finger tendon, 3-4 months, 11-day DL
SP Gehrig Pearl, Torn triceps, 3 months, 11-day DL

Pearl going down is going to hurt, but being replaced by Shepherd makes it easier to take. On the season Pearl was 4-5 4.76 in 12-starts. I am starting to get concerned he will be on of those injury prone guys that has trouble staying on the field... After missing almost a month of games Rubio will head down to AAA to get a couple of rehab showings. That and I am not 100% sure what roster moves to make right now, she he may just be there very short term.

Other/Roster News:

GM Notes:
This was a rough week. I hate losing and I hate losing to teams that are trying to chase us done. The Iron Pigs made us look silly and the first game against the Blue Hens might have been our worst loss of the year, not only did we get blown out we lost our starting pitcher. That is just painful. I am glad we were able to pull out the final game of the week, setting up for a big final 2-games against the Blue Hens. If we can hold on over this week I will feel better. Despite going 2-4 against our division rivals some how we only "lost" 1/2 a game.

To start the week Gehrig Pearl left his start early with a sore elbow, that injury seemed minor, until later in the week when Patterson decided to throw him again. Now he is out for 3-months, a blow that could have been a lot worse it wasn't for Robert Shepherd coming off the DL. These are the injuries that I don't pay enough attention to, and when I don't bad things usually happen. Losing Pearl for 3-months hurts, not only because he was a solid starter, but because I feel like I am hampering his development by seeing him hurt and not able to pitch.

Last year I acquired Gregorio Costello in a deal that I thought turned out to be a steal. But Costello just hasn't lived up to the expectations I had for him. With Pearl out and Shepherd back Costello is now our #5 starter, he is a guy I acquired thinking he was a #2 or 3 easily! But his 1.46 WHIP this season shows how much he has struggled. He gives up too many hits (109 in 101.2) innings and can't strike out anyone (76 in 101.2). So far this year he is 4-6 4.60, following up on his 7-5 3.89 partial season with us last season. I was hoping for more of the same, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. I would deal him away, expect he IS our team leader. To find a player of his caliber, in skill and leadership would be tough. So he is here to stay out of necessity.

It is getting close to the point where I feel like I need to do something about this defense. Step one will be taking over the lineup's and getting Eugene Todd away from 3B! He now has 9 errors in 32 games over at the hot-corner, and an awful ZR (-4.0), and .901 FPct! He is a better 1B and an even better DH! I feel like this team might benefit with him at DH and Maxwell back in at 3B. But that would mean Lorenzo Leal would be back on the bench, which might not be bad thing. I am thinking about this and very tempted.

This is an early All-Star break, as we have one more week to go till the break. I am not sure if that is a good thing or not, but I do know in Chadds Ford we have always played better post all-star break. I am hoping 2038 will be the same. So here is to the final 6-games and a strong finish and most excitingly is the return of Robert Shepherd.

Lets go Cannons and lets start pulling away!

Thanks that is good to hear. I am glad you enjoy this dynasty that much that it got you back to creating your own.. . It has been a fun run and I am still shocked I have continued after 30+ seasons.

Transactions:
Sent RP Dani Rúbio to Triple A San Juan for injury rehab.

I am not sure what to do with Dani. I want him up in the bigs, but that means sending down Gallin Krall, but he deserves to be here. I am tempted to try to trade someone or get really drastic and send Meyers to to minors... something to ponder over the All-Star break.

Injuries:
SS Jose Ayala, Torn ankle ligaments, 2 days, 60-day DL
MR Dustin McNeil, torn UCL, 10 months, 60-day DL
OF Byung-Ho Ch'on, ruputred finger tendon, 3 months, 11-day DL
SP Gehrig Pearl, Torn triceps, 2-3 months, 11-day DL

When Ayala gets healthy he will head down to AAA and start playing 2B. He has great range and defensive ratings, but a below average arm. For the time being with Mildmay at SS maybe 2B would fit him better. We will see. It will be nice to have him back.

Other/Roster News:
none

GM Notes:
This was a rough week. We did what we had to do against the Blue Hens, but man did we struggle with the Blue Jays. I think they are just a team that we have issues with, and I have to say that is annoying. I want to win and win every game... at least the series to be realistic... and to get dominated like we did, it really hurts.

It is nice seeing our starters ERA start to drop. It is still way too high, in fact for us to have a shot at winning anything this year our starters ERA has to be top-5. If its not then we won't be able to compete. The addition of Shepherd will help out a lot. It will be interesting to see how he follows up his first start. He was awesome last week and seeing that gave me a little confidence boost.

It is funny half the time I really excited about these guys and the other half I am worried because I am not sure what to expect... sadly I am not sure what that means. Are we a good team or a mediocre team? I can't really tell yet. I should be able to tell this far into the season, but I can't get a sense. Players like Ying-Hua Ji and John Robertson aren't pitching as good as I was expecting. Maybe I am just jealous of these other teams that can sign the big-ticket player and I have to work with players who are still under team control. I just have never felt really great here in Chadds Ford (outside of maybe last year). I feel like there are just too man things against me.

I want to build a dynasty here, I want to win the title and leave and watch this team compete for years to come. I just don't think its possible. Even if I end up winning it all this year, I will end trading away players like: Ji, Shepherd, Wallstreet, and Davis. I just can't afford them. And that means we will be back into the rebuilding phase. Part of this might be my own problem, rushing the young guys to the majors too quickly. But it makes more sense to stagger the losing of young stars right? Than to lose them all after 5 seasons.

Enough of that... we are heading to the All-Star break in first, something I didn't think we would be doing after that first month. We have held our own (somewhat) against the top teams and will head into July with another docket full of tough teams. The month like May are probably gone, but who really thought we'd play that well to begin with. It is going to be a battle holding off the upstart Iron Pigs. The worst part is because of the newly generated schedule we only play them 4 more times. (Maybe I need to expand 2-more teams to be able to balance the schedule again.)

So this is our hands, we have to stay healthy and keep putting up the W's. My biggest concern is the health of our starters, at least it feels like we have some depth on the roster and that always makes things better... But keep in mind if we start to slump in July it is possible that stars like Mikel Wallstreet and possible Ying-Hua Ji get dealt. Build up this team for the future. So with that being said July is really going to be a tell-tale month for this squad. Are we contenders or pretenders? Can Shepherd bounce back and keep it going? Will his presence make everyone else better? I sure hope so.

Hard to believe its All-Star break time already... I will have to review the roster over the next few days and see if anything needs to change.

PS: I feel like I get repetitive with the comments regarding this team... I think its because I am confused by them. I just can't get a feeling on if we are good or not, are we going to collapse or not... That first month really threw me off.
