We are in Minneapolis to play the Twins a 4 game series. They split 4 games in San Diego over the weekend. We split 4 games with Minnesota in Portland, May 2-5. They are 3rd in scoring in the PCL with 4.50 runs per game (Portland is 9th with 4.13). They are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.26 per game (Portland is 7th with 4.13). Their run differential is +114 and ours is up to 0! Probably will not be positive after this series, though...

Portland Beavers (43-49 .467 19.5 GB tied for 5th place in the PCL West) at
Minnesota Twins (53-39 .576 11.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East)

POR: Edwin Mares (29-R Season debut) Rookie vs. MIN: Carl Jones (28-R 4-8 4.50)

This will be Mares' season debut with the Beavers and hopefully his swan song, as well.

Jones beat us in Portland, only giving us 1 run and 5 H in 8.1 IP. He is 0-6 in his last 7 starts.

Bottom of the Sixth:
Marco Manga walks on 4 pitches. The Bullpen is up. Manga steals 2nd. Dave Kiehne lines a hit to right. Dick Henry loops a little hit to center and Manga scores. 3 to 2, Twins. Call to the Bullpen: Roger Lerer (29-L). Jeff Novotny, who got his first MLB hit last time up, tries to lay down a bunt, but whiffs on two attempts. The third pitch of the AB is a wild one, negating any need for a bunt... Novotny flies out to left and Kiehne tags up, but Fernando Martinez throws him out at the plate! Henry goes to 3rd on the throw. Call to the Bullpen: Rich Larkin (23-R). We walk Larry Kelm intentionally... So we give up the platoon advantage when they send up a pinch-hitter for the pitcher... Couldn't see that one coming, Skip? Moron.... PH Pat Penick (23-L), batting .316 with 1 HR in 19 AB, grounds out to short!

Carlos Alvarez swings at a 3-2 pitch and pops out to center!

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Randy Bergman (35-R), their closer with 20 SV and a 3.62 ERA in 37.1 IP. Joe Sarette (29-R) was their closer last year and had much better stats then and now... Rick Mansoor walks on 4 pitches. Larry Ballard flies out to center. Jack Hinckley walks on 4 pitches! Control has not been an issue for Bergman in the past. Fernando Martinez works the count to 3-0 and then swings and fouls it back. He takes the next pitch for a strike, 3-2. He swings at the payoff pitch and crushes it 434 ft. to right center!!!! 5 to 4, Beavers!!! Glenn Snowden strikes out. Fernando Mexicano lines a hit to right center. P Roy Huls is allowed to hit, because we do not have any fresh arms left in the Pen. He strikes out.

Trudy the Trainer was the bearer of bad news today. She says the doctors have reevaluated 2B Shannon Kuchta's thumb and have decided that additional surgery is required. We were expecting him back in a week or two, but he will now be out the rest of the season. So Kuchta has likely played his last game for the Beavers...

We still expect to get P Rondey Moe (26-R) back tomorrow and CF Brian Mitchell (21-L) the day after that. Moe will not go to rehab, but Mitchell probably will.

The Los Angeles Angels are in town to play a short two game set. The defending PCL West Champs have hit a tough patch. They lost 2 of 3 at San Diego over the weekend and are 5-12 in July. Maybe we are just what they need, since we are 3-6 against them on the season and got swept in 3 games the last time they visited us, May 10-12. The Angels are 13th in scoring with 3.71 runs per game (Portland is up to a tie for 6th with 4.26!). They are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.83 per game (Portland is 8th with 4.19). Their run differential is -11 and ours is +7! The only team other than San Francisco that is better in the division is behind us in the standings (San Diego). Oakland and Hollywood both have winning records, but negative run differentials. The Angels, who built their team on dominant starting pitching, have three members of their rotation on the DL.

Los Angeles Angels (48-50 .490 19 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (47-52 .475 20.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

LA: Tom Sayers (26-R 1-5 5.00) Rookie vs. POR: Steve Muir (27-R 8-7 2.81) Gold Glove

Sayers is another example of a pitcher who has had trouble getting anyone out except when he faces the Beavers. His lone win was against us when he shut us out for 5 innings on May 12. It was hist first start Major League start and his first anywhere after missing nearly a year after shoulder surgery. No rehab. He has lost his last 4 starts in a row.

Muir was rocked for 5 runs and 10 hits in 4.1 IP last time out, but we won the game anyway.

The Houston Astros are in town to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games at home with Salt Lake City. We beat them 3 of 4 in Houston, May 6-9. They are 10th in scoring in the PCL with 4.15 runs per game (Portland is up to 5th with 4.38!). Do you remember when we were last in the League in scoring? The Astros are tied for 14th in fewest runs allowed with 4.58 per game (Portland is 8th with 4.18). Their run differential is -44 and ours is +20!!

Houston Astros (45-56 .446 24.5 GB in 6th place in the PCL East) at

HOU: Jimmy Henderson (26-L 5-5 3.55) Rookie vs. POR: Rondey Moe (26-R 2-4 3.02)

We have never faced Henderson as a starter. He pitched 1 scoreless inning against us in relief. He only gave up 2 runs and 4 H to San Francisco in 6 IP in his last start, but did not get a decision.

This will be Moe's 1st start since tweaking his shoulder 18 days ago.

We inked P Garry Ayers (29-R) to an extension last night. 1 year for $380,000, which gives him a $5,000 raise over this season. He is the only player we have eligible for free agency this winter that we wanted to retain. The others that we have no interest in: C Darrel Milewski (31-R) (remember him?), IF Rich Cruz (30-R), LF Don Neumann (32-S).

Houston Astros (47-57 .452 23.5 GB in 6th place in the PCL East) at

We faced Sandoval in Houston, but not for long. He retired the first four batters of the game and then had to leave with an injury. He gave up 6 runs in 2.1 IP in his last start.

Flores ended a 3 game losing streak last time out by tying the Beaver record for SO with 10 in 8 IP and only 2 runs allowed.

In the bottom of the 9th, we got 2 men on base with 1 out and the pitcher due up to bat. It came down to deciding between C Jim Shippy and CF Esteban Mondolfo to pinch hit. I decided on Mondolfo because he was less likely, it seemed, to ground into a double play, being speedy and all. Mondolfo ended the game with a GDP...

Trudy the Trainer had a report to file, because P David Fuentes had to leave the game with an injury. She says he just has a sore ankle that will bother him for a day or two.

We are in Oakland to close out the month with a 3 game series. The Oaks split 4 games at Denver over the weekend. We are 4-3 against them on the season and swept them in 4 games the last time we were here, April 18-21. They are 7th in the PCL in scoring with 4.27 runs per game (Portland is up to 4th with 4.36). The Oaks are 3rd in HR with 101 and Portland is #1 with 111. They are 13th in fewest runs allowed with 4.50 per game (Portland is 8th with 4.19). Their run differential is -24 and ours is +18, though they have a winning record and we have a losing one...

Portland Beavers (50-55 .476 22.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (56-49 .533 16.5 GB tied for 2nd place in the PCL West)

POR: Duke McKenzie (24-R 2-3 4.12) Rookie vs. OAK: Greg Ware (26-L 13-4 2.55)
All-Star

McKenzie has won his last two starts and looked pretty good doing it. He allowed 1 run and 4 H in 7 IP last time out. He is prone to the long ball, though, and the Oaks are prolific at hitting them, so I do not expect this to go well.

Ware is their #1 starter. He was their closer last year. He beat us the only time we have faced him this season, striking out 12 in 8 IP, but we did get 4 runs.

Bottom of the First:
Gerry Elliott lines out to center. John Trent swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short. All we ask of P Duke McKenzie this game is to not let Javy Puente pass Glenn Snowden for the HR lead. Puente grounds out to 2nd! 1-2-3!

Top of the Second:
Fernando Mexicano lines a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit and goes to 2nd on a wild pitch. With 2 outs, Juan Rojas takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. P Duke McKenzie grounds out to the pitcher.

Top of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Larry Johnson (24-R), their closer with a 1.62 ERA in 55.2 IP and a WHIP of 0.75. With 1 out, PH Rick Woodell (31-L) doubles down the right field line! Juan Rojas lines a hit to center and Woodell heads home....safe!!! 3 to 2, Beavers! P Roy Huls is allowed to hit, because we do not want Rich Larkin trying to finish the game.... Huls bunts Rojas to 2nd. 2 outs. PH Larry Ballard (23-L) strikes out...

Bottom of the Ninth:
Ballard stays in to play center and Hinckley moves to right. Dave Risinger (26-R) is in to play short. 6-7-8 due up for the Oaks. PH Kenny Giachino (25-L), a rookie who is 2 for 8 (.250) with a double and 2 BB, is sent up. He led the B Leagues with 27 HR last year. He swings at a 2-2 pitch and hits a home run to straight away center.... Tie game: 3 to 3. With 1 out, Mario Rodriguez draws a walk... He steals 2nd... C Juan Rosa (33-R), batting .256 with 1 HR in 78 AB, grounds a hit to center and Rodriguez scores....

Lost - 4 to 3

Portland Beavers (50-56 .472 23.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (57-49 .538 16.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

POR: Rondey Moe (26-R 2-5 3.24) vs. OAK: Cary Cornman (35-R 7-8 5.13)
All-Star

In his first start after missing 18 days with an injury, Moe only went 4 innings and allowed 6 H and 3 R, last time out.

Cornman was their #1 starter last year when Greg Ware was their closer. He went 16-8 with a 3.62 ERA, but seems to have gotten old this year. We have faced him twice this season and he is 0-1, but has a Quality Start in each game. He has won his last 3 starts.

Through 5 innings, the 1st inning hit by Jack Hinckley is all we have...

We activated CF Brian Mitchell (21-L) from his rehab assignment and sent CF Esteban Mondolfo (30-R) back to Vancouver (A).

Portland Beavers (51-56 .477 23.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West) at

POR: Bobby Johnson (23-R 6-8 3.02) vs. OAK: Hugo Lopez (26-R 4-9 4.17) Rookie

Johnson is 0-2 in his last 3 starts. He gave up 10 H in 5 IP last time out, but only 2 runs, though that was enough to garner a loss.

We beat Lopez back in April, scoring 4 runs in 5 IP, but only 1 run was earned and he only gave us 4 hits and 2 walks. He has lost his last 2 starts.

We are back home to play the Seattle Rainiers a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 2 of 3 in Los Angeles. We are 2-4 against them on the season and split a pair of games the last time they were in Portland, June 18-19. They are 15th in scoring in the PCL with 3.63 runs per game (Portland is 4th with 4.37). They are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.20 per game (Portland is 7th with 4.14). So now we are in the top half in both scoring and defense, but still have a losing record... Seattle's run differential is -61 and ours is +25.

Seattle Rainiers (40-67 .374 35 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (52-56 .481 23.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL West)

SEA: Jamie Ladnier (33-L 8-6 3.57) vs. POR: Steve Muir (27-R 10-7 2.83) Gold Glove

Ladnier is 1-1 against us, though he lost the game he pitched well and won the game he stunk it up.

Muir is 3-0 in his last 4 starts, though two of them were clunkers. The last one was pretty good, though: he pitched a 4 hit shutout.
