I finally bought the game and was wondering where to start. Is the ABA template a good way to get started with OOTP? I eventually want to start an association beginning in the '70's, but this seemed like a good way to get started

Yes. Good way to get your feet wet and learn the features, the customization options, etc. without too much responsibility.
