NY YANKEES THRU THE 1960's
NEW YORK POST
YANKS WIN SPRING OPENER By Chuck Finley Staff Writer St Petersburg FL March 13, 1960 The Yankees took on the LA Dodgers to open the Grapefruit League season today in Florida. The Yanks had ace Whitey Ford on the hill against the Dodgers Don Drysdale. The Dodgers scored first in the top of the fifth inning against Ford. Junior Gilliam lead off with a base on balls. Drysdale then sent a sac bunt down the third base line and Andy Carey was able to get the Dodger’s pitcher out at first sending Gilliam to second. Maury Wills then singled to right scoring Gilliam. The fleet footed Wills then stole second off Ford, a true test of the Dodger short stops speed stealing off Ford. Wally Moon then singled in Wills and at the end of the top half of the fifth the Dodger’s lead 2-0. Drysdale was able to keep the Yanks scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. In the seventh Andy Carey doubled to center and the Kent Hadley pinch hitting for Art Ditmar sinled to left scoring Hadley. Eleston Howard then singled to left sending Hadley to second. Mickey Mantle then singled to right advancing the runners. With the sacks “juiced” Roger Maris then lined a shot to right center scoring all three runners. When the smoke cleared the Yankees were now up 4-2 over the Dodgers. The Dodgers managed to score a run off relief pitcher Johhny Gabler. In the top of the ninth Casey brought in Bob Turley to nail down the victory for the New Yorker’s. After game reporters asked Casey to name his opening starter against the Red Sox. Casey then said, “we got a lot of good pitchers on this team and I may have to go the lefty that was out there today”. We think he was talking about Ford , but with Stengel you just never know. The Yankees will open the regular season against the Boston Red Sox on April, 13. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by ACESFAN 1; Today at 12:27 PM.
