It's the little things I love. . .

I'm three months into a 1976 season, managing the Astros, who are doing quite well, except they share a division with the Big Red Machine, who are playing over .700 ball and wiping the floor with the rest of the NL, just like you'd expect.

Heading into a three game series against the Reds, I notice that Joe Morgan just went on the DL for a NINE MONTH injury. Perfect situation for an arrogant loud-mouth like Joe. So now there's more hope for my Astros. Gotta love this game.

I love the way i started a new game and my first pick was getting a really pitcher. In his first three games he was 2-0, ERA 1.24, 15K. He then was injured for 12 months I was gutted when i saw the notice come up.

I managed to make the playoffs without him though.

That Big Red Machine rolled over my Astros 6-1 in our first game without Morgan. George Foster hit an 8th inning grand slam against my closer (Ken Forsch) and Cesar Cedeno got hurt, but only for 4 days (at least, that's what the doc says now.)

It will still be a battle but maybe I can make a couple sweet trades and improve our chances since the Reds lost such a key player.

Joe may have had a big mouth but he backed up everything he said. He was totally amazing...the best second baseman I ever saw. Sometimes people compare him to guys from the steroid era and it just isn't a good comparison. Like with Mike Schmidt. He was tremendous in his era but people comapare him with the guys in the steroid era and say he did not hit that many HRs.

Anyway, yes Joe could talk with the best of them. The year Sparky got fired Morgan missed 20 or 30 games due to injury and the Reds finished second to the Dodgers by 2 or 3 games. And the new GM fired Sparky. Always despised Dick Wagner for tearing up the Reds.

I had a player get suspended for two games. Player got mad because he got called out after 3 strikes. He wouldnt leave the field until the manager got him off after 5 minutes. Then after the game the player told reporters "He was blind today. They played three blind mice for him. If he doesnt know the words to the song, Im sure we can get it in braille, so he can follow along"
