Question Cap Hit Question

Would someone be able to explain to me why some players cap hit differs from their salary?

Example where salary and cap hit match:

Example where salary is more than the cap hit:

Example where salary is less than cap hit:

I'm especially interested in the latter because a) the fella is on my roster, and b) I can't figure out why this would be.

Some contracts are front or back loaded.

For example - you could sign a 3-year/$18m contract and it could look multiple ways.

You could do - 6M, 6M, 6M.

In that case, salary and cap hit would both be 6M each year.

You could also do 5M, 6M, 7M.

In that case, the cap hit would be 6M each year, but the salary would be 5M, 6M, 7M in years 1, 2, 3 respectively.

So the salary cap is worked out as total salary / # of years, regardless of how the actual salary per year is paid?

Correct.

That means a team that is on an internal budget (like my Ottawa Senators) will be looking at players who have a cap higher than the amount of dollars given a bit more because the cap hit is needed to reach the floor, while the actual money given to the player is less. It's a win-win for our owner...

Micpringle, and anyone else interested,or has nothing better to do...

here is a link to the NHLPA Collective Bargining Agreement for 2012 - 2022
http://www.nhlpa.com/inside-nhlpa/co...ning-agreement

Article 50 Team Payroll Range System, Section 50.5 (starts at pg. 257) explains the real life system which is called in the agreement "Hockey Releated. evenue; Lower Limit and Upper Limit," which is basically the salary cap. Interesting reading if one is so inclined.

I actually read the agreement to get a better grasp of the front office aspect of FHM4. Hockey, I've discovered is and entirely different beast than Baseball and OOTPB 18 loaned players, ability to bring up players from one minor league but not another salary structure etc.

I thought I understood Ice Hockey, at least until I started playing FHM4... boy was I wrong.

Anyway hope this helps some,

@roeddog Looks like the link is broken—just brings you straight to this thread. Wouldn't mind having a read through it though if you could fix the link.

Try this instead
http://www.nhl.com/nhl/en/v3/ext/CBA...A_2013_CBA.pdf

You can get the AHL and ECHL CBAs here
http://www.phpa.com/shop/index.php?r...egory&path=110

NHL contracted players in the AHL are bound by the NHL CBA.
