Tiebreakers replay
I've been playing a lot of historical exhibitions lately, and that's given me the idea for a project - re-playing the various tie-breaking games (or series) that have occurred throughout baseball history. But instead of single-game or best-of-three playoffs, I'm going to play them all as best-of-seven.
As far as I can see, this gives me a list of: 1946 Cardinals vs. Dodgers - NL Pennant 1948 Indians vs. Red Sox - AL Pennant 1951 Giants vs. Dodgers - NL Pennant 1959 Dodgers vs. Braves - NL Pennant 1962 Giants vs. Dodgers - NL Pennant 1978 Yankees vs. Red Sox - AL East 1980 Astros vs. Dodgers - NL West 1995 Mariners vs. Angels - AL West 1998 Cubs vs. Giants - NL Wild Card 1999 Mets vs. Reds - NL Wild Card 2007 Rockies vs. Padres - NL Wild Card 2008 White Sox vs. Twins - AL Central 2009 Twins vs. Tigers - AL Central 2013 Rays vs. Rangers - AL Wild Card The rules: 1) Best-of-seven, with home field going to the real-life winner. 2) If a result changes, I'll then have that new winner play as far as they go. For example, if the Rangers win the 2013 AL Wild Card playoff, then I'll have them play the Indians in the Wild Card game...then maybe the Red Sox in the ALDS, the Tigers in the ALCS, and the Cardinals in the WS. However far they go. First up, 1946 Cards vs. Dodgers Last edited by ojoe; 03-26-2018 at 04:14 AM. |

This journey begins with a replay of the 1946 NL Pennant playoff between the St. Louis Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers.
Real-life result: Cardinals won the best-of-three in two games, winning 4-2 in Sportsman's Park, and then 8-4 in Ebbett's Field. Game 1 - Brooklyn (Higbe, 17-8, 3.03) at St. Louis (Breechen, 15-15, 2.49) World Series Game 1 Victory for Brecheen and St. Louis 1946 The stakes were high. Harry Brecheen was ready. The left-hander turned in a performance for the ages at Sportsman's Park IV today, pitching a 9-inning, complete-game shutout to lead the St. Louis 1946 Cardinals to victory in Game 1 of the World Series. Brecheen held the Brooklyn 1946 Dodgers to 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 4. The win got the best-of-7 series off to a good start for St. Louis 1946, which now leads 1-0. Brecheen pitched a complete game for St. Louis 1946. The left-hander was charged with no runs on 4 hits. He struck out 4 during his 127-pitch performance. "It was a tough night at the plate," said Brooklyn 1946 manager Leo Durocher. Breechen got all the support he would need in the 2nd inning. Enos Slaughter led off the inning with a double, but then Brooklyn starter Kirby Higbe retired the next two batters on fly outs that kept Slaughter on second. Higbe was one strike away from escaping the jam when Cardinals shortstop Marty Marion lined a 2-2 pitch into the left field bleachers for a 2-0 St. Louis lead. Third baseman Whitey Kurkowski added an RBI groundout in the bottom of the 5th. Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow at Sportsman's Park IV in St. Louis. The scheduled starters for the game are Hal Gregg for the Brooklyn 1946 Dodgers and Howie Pollet for the the St. Louis 1946 Cardinals. Marty Marion's home run opens the scoring. |

Game 2 -
Brooklyn (Gregg, 6-4, 2.99) at St. Louis (Pollet, 21-10, 2.10) Cardinals, Dodgers Play 11 to Settle Game 2, St. Louis 1946 Now Leads Series 2-0 The St. Louis 1946 Cardinals got a strong game from starter Howie Pollet, but it was some clutch hitting that ultimately delivered the win. The Cardinals took the 4-1 win over the Brooklyn 1946 Dodgers in Game 2 of the World Series in a 11th inning walk-off today. The win capped off a fine outing for the left-handed Pollet, who was named player of the game. Pollet threw 11 innings allowing 1 run in the win, which gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. St. Louis 1946 won the game in the bottom of the 11th inning. With one out and Hal Gregg on the mound for Brooklyn 1946, shortstop Marty Marion hit a dramatic 3-run home run, bringing Cardinals fans to their feet. It was Marion's second home run of the series. "It was another tough night at the plate," said Brooklyn 1946 manager Leo Durocher. It was a lack of timely hitting that doomed the Dodgers on this occasion. After being held to only four hits in game one, tonight the Dodgers got to Pollet for 12 hits - but 11 of them were singles. They put runners on first and second with one out three times in the first five innings. None of those runners even made it safely to third. In all, the Dodgers left 13 men on base, compared to only 7 for the Cardinals. Game 3 is set to be played Friday. The scheduled starters for the game are Murry Dickson for St. Louis 1946 and Joe Hatten for Brooklyn 1946. Marty Marion's second homer wins it for St. Louis. |

Game 3 -
St. Louis (Dickson, 15-6, 2.88) at Brooklyn (Hatten, 14-11, 2.84) Cardinals Win to Extend Series Lead to 3-0 Riding the 4-hit performance of second baseman Red Schoendienst, the St. Louis 1946 Cardinals got a road win against the Brooklyn 1946 Dodgers, 9-2, in Game 3 of the World Series today. Schoendienst went 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 singles. He scored 3 times and drove in 2 for the Cardinals, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 3 games to 0. Schoendienst delivered in the top of the second inning for St. Louis 1946. With the game tied and runners on 2nd and 3rd, the second baseman hit a 2-run double to left-center. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Cardinals manager Eddie Dyer said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is scheduled for tomorrow in Brooklyn. Slated to start are Ken Burkhart for the St. Louis 1946 Cardinals and Art Herring for the the Brooklyn 1946 Dodgers. |

Game 4 -
St. Louis (Burkhart, 6-3, 2.88) at Brooklyn (Herring, 7-2, 3.35) Stevens, Dodgers Wallop Cardinals in Game 4 of CS On the verge of being swept and facing a red-hot St. Louis 1946 Cardinals team, the Brooklyn 1946 Dodgers had a tough assignment. Ed Stevens delivered. The Dodgers first baseman was unstoppable for the visitors, as he went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double. He drove in 3 runs and scored once in guiding his club to its first victory of the series, 7-4. Stevens, 21, was named player of the game for his efforts. The win means Brooklyn 1946 now trails 3-1 in the best-of-7 series. Eddie Stanky, who is a three-time All-Star, aided the Brooklyn 1946 cause with a 2-run triple in the bottom of the first. For the game, the second baseman went 1 for 2 with a triple and a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Dodgers manager Leo Durocher said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." Game 5 is scheduled for tomorrow. The scheduled starters for the game are Harry Brecheen for St. Louis 1946 and Kirby Higbe for Brooklyn 1946. Ed Stevens with Brooklyn's best highlight so far. |

Game 4 -
St. Louis (Breechen, 15-15, 2.49) at Brooklyn (Higbe, 17-8, 3.03) Cardinals Advance to World Series The St. Louis 1946 Cardinals put together a solid effort in ousting the Brooklyn 1946 Dodgers to advance to the World Series. St. Louis 1946 won the final game by a 6-1 count and captured the National League pennant 4-1. Harry Brecheen led the way for St. Louis 1946, turning in his second complete game of the series. "I just tried to make pitches and get outs, I guess it worked out," said Brecheen, who was named series MVP. The MVP had a 0.50 ERA over 18 innings pitched, with a 2-0 record. Hitting stars for St. Louis during the series included Stan Musial and Red Schoendienst who both batted .364 over the five games. Marty Marion only batted .250 for the series, but helped win the first two games in St. Louis with big home runs - one of them a 3-run walk-off blast to left field to win Game 2. Overall he drove in 9 runs during the series. Dodger catcher Bruce Edwards was his team's main offensive star, going 10-for-17 with two walks - good for a .588 batting average and .650 on-base percentage. But, his batting line also exemplified Brooklyn's struggle to find extra base power, or to string hits together. All of his hits were singles, and though he reached base 12 times in four games, he did not score a run or drive one in. The Dodgers only had seven extra-base hits in the whole series, and three of those came in the team's 6-run first-inning outburst in Game 4. The Cardinals outscored the Dodgers 26-11 in the series. St. Louis batted .271 with a 1.76 team ERA. Brooklyn hit only .244 and posted a team ERA of 4.76. Harry Breechen strikes out Pete Reiser for the final out. Series MVP Harry Breechen Next up, 1948 Indians/Red Sox....But not tonight. |

Love it, but I would save the linescore prior to the next game. Kinda gives a little spoiler knowing the end after looking at game one.
