The Pit of Despair

How well would minor league teams be able to compete against major league teams? It depends on the team, but over a one year sample, they probably wouldn't do too well. What about over the course of 100 years? Welcome to a new era of baseball.

All 30 major league teams, plus all affiliated minor league teams (excluding the DSL, GCL, and AZL) have been placed into one division. That's a total of 190 teams. Series will be one game, so each team will play almost every other team once. Minor leagues are no longer affiliated with major league teams, so Vlad Jr is a New Hampshire Fisher Cat until he becomes a free agent or gets traded. The team that finishes in first is the league champion. But here's the twist. At the end of each season, the last place team gets relegated, until there's only one team left. But where do teams go when they get relegated? Meet the Pit of Despair.

The pit of despair is a form of baseball purgatory. Teams will be forced to field a team every year, and they will be able to sign and trade for players, but they will not play a single game. There's nothing particularly interesting about the pit itself, but it's always there.

All a team has to do to avoid its untimely fate is to not finish in last place. It will be easy for major league teams to stay up at the beginning, but will the last teams remaining all be MLB teams, or will minor league teams eventually narrow the gap in competitiveness? Let's find out together.

2018 Season:

The NEW YORK YANKEES were the league champions. They finished with a record of 149-13, 6 games ahead of the Chicago Cubs. They went 27-0 in June and 28-0 in August to pull ahead in the league.

The PRINCETON RAYS are the first team relegated to the Pit of Despair. They finished 13-149, 9 games behind the Bristol Pirates.
189 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:
Joey Votto led the league with a .408 average and .576 OBP.

Mike Trout led the league with 15.5 WAR

Joey Gallo led the league with 64 home runs

Luis Severino went 22-0 with a 1.38 ERA

Chad Green pitched 62.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing 1 earned run, good for a 0.14 ERA and 3034 ERA+.

AJ Pollock hit 73 doubles.

Julio Meza (Princeton) was worth -8.9 WAR. He had a .168 OPS, with 1 walk and 2 extra base hits, in 132 games.

Mike Tauchman (Albuquerque) had the longest hitting streak at 32 games

The Nationals hit .335 as a team

The Memphis Redbirds were the best MiLB team, going 124-38.

The Detroit Tigers were the worst MLB team, going 117-45.

Teams eliminated:
2018: Princeton Rays

2019 Season

I discovered that in a league of this size, you have to schedule a World Series at the end of the season, otherwise the league will stay permanently stuck in Playoffs Mode, and you won't be able to advance to the next season. So from here on out, the top two teams in the league will play in a 7-game series to determine the winner. There will be no such series at the bottom of the league.

2019 Season:

The CHICAGO CUBS (137-25) defeated the Cleveland Indians (139-22 in the World Series.

The BRISTOL PIRATES have been banished to the pit of despair. They finished the season 24-137, 3.5 games behind the Bluefield Blue Jays. Their 2-season record in the Majors was a whopping 52-271.
188 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:
Andrew Benintendi led the league with a .406 batting average.

Giancarlo Stanton led the league with 99 home runs. Joey Gallo hit 92. Overall, 11 players hit at least 70 homers.

Bryce Harper led the league with 15.1 WAR.

Ronald Guzman (Round Rock) had a 40-game hitting streak

Noah Syndergaard struck out 369 batters

After losing his first start in 2018, Yu Darvish has won 41 consecutive decisions, including going 22-0 in 2019.

Holden Capps (Burlington Royals) went 3-23 with a 10.87 ERA

The Yankees hit 489 home runs as a team.

The Durham Bulls were the best MiLB team, going 115-46

The Colorado Rockies were the worst MLB team, going 107-54

Teams eliminated:
2018: Princeton Rays
2019: Bristol Pirates

187 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:
Bryce Harper (CLE) led the league with a .394 batting average, .534 OBP, and 15.1 WAR.

Giancarlo Stanton led the league with 92 home runs. At age 30, he has 513 for his career, and has hit 90+ in each of the past two seasons.

2021 Season:

The NEW YORK YANKEES (134-27) are the World Champions, defeating the Cleveland Indians (135-26) in the World Series. Clint Frazier was the series MVP.

The HICKORY CRAWDADS (Single-A, TEX) have been relegated to the Pit of Despair. They finished the season 53-109, 1 game behind the West Virginia Power. The AAA Norfolk Tides finished two games above the relegation zone, the most danger a high-minors team has ever been in.

186 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

Sergio Silva (CHW) led the league with a .386 batting average, becoming the first fictional player to do so.

Cody Bellinger led the league with an absurd 102 home runs and 230 RBI. At age 26, he has hit 342 homers.

After signing with the Blue Jays, Giancarlo Stanton had a down year, hitting just 67 home runs.

Aaron Judge homered in 10 straight games from June 12th to June 23rd.

Wilmington SP Kiril de Loera led the league with a 2.13 ERA, becoming the first MiLB player to lead the league in any major category. The #2 pick in the 2020 draft by the Missoula Osprey, de Loera was traded this past offseason along with Logan Forsythe from Missoula to Wilmington in exchange for three prospects, one of whom has already retired.

Williamsport SP/RP Jordi Martinez has lost 33 consecutive decisions, dating back to 2018. He went 1-14 as a starter in 2018, 0-14 as a starter in 2019, and 0-2 and 0-4 as a reliever in 2020 and 2021.

The Cedar Rapids Kernels became one of the first MiLB teams to sign a big free agent, signing Marcus Stroman to a 7 year, $76 million contract. They finished 74-87, and Stroman had a 4.24 ERA.

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp were the best MiLB team, finishing 109-52.

The Atlanta Braves were the worst MLB team, finishing 98-63.

Todd Helton, Roy Halladay, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, and Curt Schilling were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Teams eliminated:
2018: Princeton Rays
2019: Bristol Pirates
2020: Aberdeen Ironbirds
2021: Hickory Crawdads

2022 Season:

The TEXAS RANGERS (122-40) won their first league championship, defeating the Cleveland Indians (127-35) in 5 games. For the second straight season, Cleveland finished with the best record in the league, and both years they lost in the World Series

The MOBILE BAY BEARS finished in last place, getting relegated to the Pit of Despair. They finished the season 44-118, 4 games behind the West Virginia Power. The Power finished one spot out of relegation for the second season in a row. The Bay Bears are the first AA team to fall into the pit.

185 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

Giancarlo Stanton led the league with 79 home runs. He now has 659 for his career.

Bryce Harper led the league in OBP for the fourth season in a row.

Mike Parise (DET) led the league with his 11.9 WAR.

25-year-old Royals SP Mike Krieg had a breakout season, posting a 2.76 ERA leading all pitchers with 9.2 WAR. Unfortunately, Krieg's season and career came to a sudden end in September after a torn UCL.

Gwinnett Stripers SP Luis Trevino went 1-21 with an 8.25 ERA

Jordi Martinez did not have a decision in 57 relief appearances this year, so his winless streak still sits at 33 decisions.

Nine no-hitters were thrown, by far the fewest in a season in league history.

The Baltimore Orioles hit 420 home runs as a team.

The Visalia Rawhide were the best MiLB team, going 101-61. They have a payroll of $139,755,000, much of which is invested in stars Daulton Varsho and Pavin Smith. Their stadium seats 2468. They are $60 million over budget going into 2023.

The Pittsburgh Pirates were the worst MLB team, going 98-64.

David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Teams eliminated:
2018: Princeton Rays

2023 Season:

The ST. LOUIS CARDINALS (122-40) defeated the Chicago Cubs (120-42) in the World Series. Carson Kelly was named the series MVP.

The READING FIGHTING PHILS finished the season in last place, falling into the Pit of Despair. They went 48-113, one game behind the Lexington Legends. This is the second season in a row that a AA team will be eliminated from the league. It also shows how fickle this league is. Reading finished above .500 in each of their first four seasons, peaking at 49th place in 2020.

184 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

Cody Bellinger led the league with 70 home runs.

Reds LF Danny LaNear led the league with 10.2 WAR and a .764 SLG.

Mike Mitchell of the Padres went 19-1 in 143 relief innings, but was worth only 0.9 WAR due to his 20 home runs allowed

Toledo 2B Danny Robinson hit .123 in 80 games, good for a -5 wRC+ and -3.5 WAR

Mets closer Greg Griffin has saved 92 consecutive games, including 57 straight this season.

The Florida Fire Frogs have led the league in Defensive Efficiency for the third consecutive season.

The New Hampshire Fisher Cats re-signed Vlad Jr. to a 6-year, $210 million extension. He responded by hitting .330 with 8.5 WAR, leading his team to a respectable 46th place finish.

After finishing in second-to-last twice in a row, the West Virginia Power had a tremendous rebound, going 80-82 and finishing in 88th place.

The Fresno Grizzlies were the best MiLB team, going 93-68.

The Philadelphia Phillies were the worst MLB team, going 92-70.

No players were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Teams eliminated:
2018: Princeton Rays
2019: Bristol Pirates
2020: Aberdeen Ironbirds
2021: Hickory Crawdads
2022: Mobile Bay Bears

2024 Season:

The KANSAS CITY ROYALS won the World Series, defeating the Texas Rangers in 5 games.

The BOWIE BAYSOX finished in last place, dropping down to the Pit of Despair. They finished 51-111, one game behind the Potomac Nationals. They are the second Orioles affiliate to drop into the pit, after the Aberdeen Ironbirds.

183 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

Missoula Osprey RF Keenan Bell led the league with 75 home runs and 164 RBI. He was a fascinating story, signing a minor league contract with Missoula in 2022 after being released by the Montgomery Biscuits.

Royals outfielder Jarred Kelenic led the league with a .354 average and 9.9 WAR.

Giants rookie SP Kinmochi Kuwabara, signed out of Japan, went 23-4 with a 2.60 ERA.

Lansing Lugnuts SP Rogelio Zamora struck out 15.1 batters per 9 innings.

Lehigh Valley SP Zach Eflin allowed a record 51 home runs.

Mets closer Greg Griffin ended his saves streak at 99 when he blew a save on May 15th against the Florida Fire Frogs. Griffin came in with a 2-1 lead before allowing a single and a walk off homer to Mykanthony Valdez.

Mets SP Mike Nifong struck out 20 batters and walked none in just 8 innings in a game against Hudson Valley on September 5th. His 0.714 WHIP is the fourth best of all time, behind Clayton Kershaw and two separate Syndergaard seasons.

Joey Votto, Cody Bellinger, Freddie Freeman, and Aaron Judge all hit their 500th home runs.

Led by Keenan Bell, the Osprey had a miraculous turnaround season, winning 93 games and finishing in 35th place. This is the best season by a Rookie-level team, and stands in contrast to their 2018 and 2019 seasons, in which they won 24 and 35 games, finishing in 185th and 187th place respectively.

The Syracuse Chiefs were the best MiLB team, going 97-65.

The Miami Marlins were the worst MLB team, going 93-69.

No players were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Teams eliminated:
2018: Princeton Rays

181 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

Mookie Betts (STL) led the league with a .365 batting average.

Cody Bellinger once again led the majors in home runs, hitting 71 and giving him 701 in his career. He is just 31 years old.

Blue Jays 1B Zhao-Dao Xia led the league with a .800 slugging percentage and 1.229 OPS.

2027 Season:

The Texas Rangers won their second ever World Series, defeating the New York Mets in 6 games.

The Lake Elsinore Storm have been relegated to the Pit of Despair. They finished the season 54-107, 5 games behind the Grand Junction Rockies for last place. The Storm finished in 38th place in 2021, but only had one other season above .500.

180 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

This will forever be known as the year that multiple Minor League teams broke through. All 6 statistics shown on the front page (AVG, HR, RBI, ERA, W, K) were led by players on minor league teams. Additionally, nine MiLB teams won at least 90 games.

Sean Sanders of the Lakewood Blue Claws led the league with a .374 batting average.

Charlotte Knights 1B Elvis Trickel led the league with 72 home runs.

Wilmington Blue Rocks SP Mike Glover led the league with 325 strikeouts. He has stepped up and filled the hole left by ace Kiril de Loera, who signed with the Durham Bulls this past offseason.

Rangers rookie centerfielder Luis Legarreta led the league with 10.1 WAR. The 31-year-old signed with the team out of Cuba this past offseason.

Clayton Kershaw, now with St. Louis, won his 300th game in May.

It was a season to remember for the Lexington Legends. After finishing one spot out of relegation just four years earlier, they won 108 games, leading the league in runs scored and finishing in sixth place. As recently as September 10th, they were in third. The team was led by Luis Zapata, signed 7 years earlier as an international amateur. Zapata hit .327 with 62 homers and a 1.106 OPS. Luis Arteaga, another international amateur signing, led the league in on base percentage.

The Sacramento River Cats were the best MiLB team, going 110-51 and finishing in 3rd place. Just two games out of the playoffs, they had the best season any minor league team has had yet.

The Philadelphia Phillies were the worst MLB team, going 81-80. They finished in 77th place, 5 games behind the Boston Red Sox.

Miguel Cabrera, Zack Greinke, CC Sabathia, and Max Scherzer all were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2028 Season:

The CHICAGO CUBS were the world champions, defeating the New York Mets in the World Series in five games.

The GRAND JUNCTION ROCKIES fell into the pit after finishing in last place. They ended up 53-109, just one game behind the Midland RockHounds.

179 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

Luis "Slugger" Collazo (Mahoning Valley) led the league with his .356 batting average. Contrary to his nickname, he hit just 11 home runs.

Cody Bellinger once again led the league in home runs, with 62. He now has 814 for his career, behind only Giancarlo Stanton. Bellinger is 33 years old.

Pulaski Yankees 1B Tommy Rushton led the league with 9.7 WAR. He is the first player on a rookie-level team to do so.

Blue Jays SP Bobby Adams led the league with a 1.92 ERA and 0.767 WHIP. His 12.9 K/9 led the league for the fourth consecutive season. His WHIP ties 2019 Dallas Keuchel for the ninth best of all time. A 34th round pick in 2018, Adams has defied the odds to become perhaps the league's best pitcher.

Diamondbacks rookie Danny Dennis threw a perfect game against the Columbia Fireflies on June 30th. It was his first time all season pitching into the sixth inning, and coming into the game his ERA was 6.61. It was the 14th perfect game since the league adopted the Pit of Despair format. Six of the fourteen came in 2018

The Buffalo Bisons were the best MiLB team, going 104-58 and finishing in 11th place.

The Oakland Athletics were the worst MLB team, going 75-87 and finishing in 123rd place. They are the first MLB team to finish below .500. Some major league teams could be closer to elimination than you would think.

2029 Season:

The DETROIT TIGERS won the World Series, defeating the Cardinals in 7 games. The Tigers won game 7 with a go-ahead home run in the 7th inning by Chris Harclerode. It was his 2nd home run of the game, after he had hit just six in his entire career prior.

The SOUTH BEND CUBS have been relegated to the Pit of Despair. They finished the season 46-115, 5 games behind the Vermont Lake Monsters for last place.

178 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

Tigers rookie first baseman Juan Tapia led the league in home runs and slugging percentage. The 30-year-old was signed out of Cuba this past offseason and immediately took the league by storm.

Another exciting rookie was Quebecois center fielder Aydan Lortie of the Asheville Tourists. Lortie led the league with a .377 batting average, but he hit just three home runs and walked only 19 times.

Mike Trout hit his 800th career home run on July 22nd. His 815 home runs is behind only Stanton and Bellinger. Trout's teammate Bryce Harper has 734, and he is likely to pass Bonds and Aaron next year.

Auburn Doubledays SP Gordie Fisher led the league with 308 strikeouts.

The Greeneville Reds led the league with their .284 batting average. They finished in 30th place, a new best for the team.

The Charlotte Knights were the best MiLB team, going 108-53 and finishing in third place, just one game behind the Cardinals.

The Oakland Athletics were the worst MLB team, going 74-88 and finishing in 119th place. Their $87,604,000 payroll is lower than that of 29 minor league teams.

Through 12 seasons, the Buffalo Bisons have the best record of any minor league team, with a .561 winning percentage. They are followed by the Durham Bulls and Tacoma Rainiers.

The State College Spikes have the worst winning percentage of any team that has not been relegated. Their best finish was 123rd place in 2028 with 74 wins. They are followed by fellow New York-Penn league teams Vermont Lake Monsters and Tri-City ValleyCats.

Robinson Cano, David Price, and Ichiro were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2030 Season:

The ST. LOUIS CARDINALS were the champions, defeating the Tacoma Rainiers in seven games in the World Series. With the score tied 7-7 in Game 7, Cardinals center fielder Josh "Big Sexy" Barrett hit a 2-run triple to put his team ahead for good. It was his first triple in four years.

The MODESTO NUTS were relegated to the Pit of Despair following a last-place season. They finished the season 51-111, just one game behind the Batavia Muckdogs, who ended on a 6-game losing streak.

177 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

Twins outfielder Juan Nutt led the league with a .360 batting average.

Rangers center fielder Matheus Valmont led the league with 10.3 WAR.

Stockton Ports shortstop Bobby Hood led the league with 253 strikeouts. That total puts him third all-time, behind Joey Gallo's 268 in 2026 and Gilberto Losada's 254 in 2029. The 21-year-old Hood had one of the worst seasons of all time, slashing just .161/.234/.297, good for a 37 OPS+. The former first round pick still has 4.5 star potential, so it's likely that he will still become a solid major league player after this disastrous rookie season.

Florida Fire Frogs pitcher Mike Gunst led the league in ERA for the second season in a row. However, the reigning Cy Young winner went just 9-10 for the dismal Frogs, who hit just .228 as a team.

On April 14th, Cody Bellinger hit his 858th career home run, passing Giancarlo Stanton for the all time lead. After seeing his skills and playing time diminish, the 35-year-old Bellinger will be a free agent at the end of the year. He hit just 15 home runs in 60 games, and it is unclear if any team will sign him.

Rangers outfielder Bryce Harper passed Hank Aaron on August 26th to move into 4th all time in home runs. He now sits at 760, just two shy of Barry Bonds. Three active players are in the top five, but the next on the list is Carlos Correa with 547, tied with Freddie Freeman for 30th and one behind Mike Schmidt.

The Milwaukee Brewers won 17 straight games to finish the season. They finished 109-53, in sixth place.

The Tacoma Rainiers had a season for the ages, winning 114 games and finishing in first place. Led by star right fielder Josh Burgert, the Rainiers became the first ever minor league team to make the World Series, falling just one game short of a championship. Burgert hit .312 with 53 home runs, and his 1.028 OPS was 10th in the league.

The Miami Marlins were the worst MLB team, going 76-86 and finishing in 112th place.

Jose Altuve was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

2031 Season:

The MINNESOTA TWINS won their first World Series in 40 years, defeating the Houston Astros in seven games.

The TRI-CITY VALLEY CATS were eliminated after a last place finish. They finished the season 55-106, three games behind the Tampa Tarpons.

176 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

Twins center fielder and 80-grade name Juan Nutt hit .367, leading the league in batting average for the second year in a row. Nutt hit 42 home runs and was worth 9.7 WAR, winning his first MVP.

In his first full season as a starter, Indianapolis Indians pitcher Juan Medina led the league with a 2.10 ERA.

Stockton Ports shortstop Bobby Hood struck out 254 times, one up from his total from last season. With improved defense, he was worth -0.5 WAR, but he still had just a .239 OBP.

Cody Bellinger signed with the Erie Seawolves in the offseason, where he hit .216 with 18 home runs and -0.9 WAR in 120 games. He retired following the season with 887 career home runs. Bryce Harper also retired after the season with 770 homers.

Mike Trout hit 21 home runs with the Red Sox, putting him one ahead of Giancarlo Stanton for second place. Even at age 40, he had a .367 OBP and 115 OPS+. His 151.3 WAR is third all time.

The Auburn Doubledays were the best minor league team, going 100-61 and finishing in 16th place.

The Pittsburgh Pirates were the worst MLB team, going 76-85 and finishing in 98th place.

Freddie Freeman, Paul Goldschmidt, Buster Posey, and Joey Votto were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Teams eliminated:

2018: Princeton Rays
2019: Bristol Pirates

2032 Season:

The SAN DIEGO PADRES won their first World Series in franchise history, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in 7 games. Not only did they come back from a 3-1 deficit, but they scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to win Game 7.

The RENO ACES fell into the pit of despair after finishing in last place. They finished 52-110, just one game behind the Kannapolis Intimidators and Tampa Tarpons for last place. The Aces are the first AAA team to be eliminated from the league.

175 teams remain in Major League Baseball...

Notes:

Orioles left fielder Jorge "Speedboat" Contreras led the league in home runs for the second year in a row, hitting 65. The league MVP was worth 11.6 WAR and had a .725 slugging percentage.

Stockton shortstop Bobby Hood struck out only 229 times in his third season. His .271 OBP and .623 OPS are career bests.

Mike Trout signed a three year deal with the San Antonio Missions this past offseason. In 115 games, he hit 25 home runs with a .369 OBP. His 2.2 WAR was his best since 2029, his final season in Anaheim. He now has 883 career home runs, and barring disaster will pass Cody Bellinger next season for the most all time.

Seven years after his Cy Young season with Wilmington, Atlanta Braves SP Kiril de Loera led all pitchers with 8.9 WAR. He went 23-5 with a 2.54 ERA, walking fewer than one batter per nine innings.

On the final day of the season, Cardinals left fielder Dan Fallon hit his 500th career home run. Though he has hit 50 home runs 7 times, he has never led the league. The 2029 MVP is just 31 years old.

The Tacoma Rainiers were the best minor league team, going 111-52 and finishing in third place. They lost a Game 163 tiebreaker against the Phillies to go to the World Series. Consistently selling out a 42,000 seat stadium, the Rainiers have all the resources of an MLB team.

The Cincinnati Reds were the worst MLB team, going 84-78 and finishing in 70th place. It was the first time since 2027 that no MLB team finished below .500.

Corey Kluber and Giancarlo Stanton were inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Teams eliminated:

2018: Princeton Rays
2019: Bristol Pirates
2020: Aberdeen Ironbirds
2021: Hickory Crawdads

2032: Reno Aces

Trout and Harper were on the same team? Which team? What was their record?

This was an incredible, original idea! Keep it up.

They were on the 2029 Angels together. It was Harper's only season in Anaheim after 7 in Washington and 9 in Cleveland. It was Trout's 19th and final season in Anaheim before spending two in Boston and two in San Antonio. They won 104 games and finished tied for 9th place.
