Finishing April

Journal

A week I'd just as soon forget. It started out bad and just got worse. I was pitching against Paris and was down 3-0. My PC hit 111 so Skip pulled me after six complete innings. In the 8th, Kevin LeLong went deep with a 3 run shot to tie it up.

But, Pascal Robert ripped a two out walk off double off reliever Joseph Riviere to give the Artists the 4-3 win.

Fountain Bleu came to Le Diamant and won 2 of 3 games. The final game of the set is an easy 11-1 win for the Diamonds.

But, finishing off the week and month, we lost to then 9-18 Giverny Herons. So, we outscore our opponents for the week and go 1-5.

April Notes

Journal

Steve Green was named batter of the month. He's working out real nice for the Diamonds.

Herve Delage is hitting just .208. His glove is keeping him in the line up. But, for how long?

I'm 1-3 with a 3.35 ERA. I'm batting .255 but with only a .618 OPS. Nothing easy about this league.

May 1-8

Journal Entry
The week started with a win but we finished 3-4. The three teams that competed so intensely at the wire last year are at it, again. I don't know what's going on in Le Morne Rouge (last place), as they don't seem to have a clear direction up there in the mountains.

The Brush Back

Journal Entry
OK, everyone is going to know about it, anyway. I got suspended for 6 games this week. So I threw a little chin music at Alain Bertrand (grazed his shoulder). He should know better than to crowd the plate on me. Especially after the guy in front of him just took me out of the yard. You can't blame that one on me. I know my job and I did it.
Bertrand is the one charging the mound and he only gets 4 games? I have always followed the advise of Sandy Koufax. 'Show me a picture who won't pitch inside, and I'll show you a loser', or something to that effect.
Skip told me that I did the right thing. The league didn't ask me for my comment...but if they would have? I would have told them, "This ain't no tea party out here."

Le Mourne Rouge

One thing the Toucans do have going for them is their ace pitcher. Our complete team has immense respect for his character and baseball ability. I'm sure their will be a lot of teams trying to wrestle this gem away from Le Morne Rouge. Phillipe Pierre is a Toucan now, but, we'd love to have this guy on our ball club.

May ends with the Diamonds in first

Journal

It's been a busy few weeks for me and it's been great being back with the guys, post-suspension. The team went 2-3 in my absence.

Herve DeLage, thankfully, is hitting the ball hard, again. He is squaring it up so well that even his outs seem like they are well struck. The guys were happy to see him get player of the week award.

We close out May in first place. Winning 7 of the last 10 made the difference. Seriously, our expectations are much higher than our achievements. We have a run differential of +54 which is tops in the FBL.

Steve Green, with 50 RBI's, leads the league. Thank you, management, for bringing him aboard. The leader in Runs? Steve Green with 38. Herve is the league leader in doubles with 15 and Vic Cosman, SP, has the best walk per 9 IP ratio, 1.2.

The May 21 Game

Journal Entry

Skip started me in CF for this game. I think it was on account of it being my 21st birthday. A nice gesture on his part. I went 1 for 4, a single that drove in a pair of runs. We came up one run short as the Expedition, the team with the most wins in the FBL, bested us by a 4-3 score. But, it was a good game with a team that we might just see in the post-season.

June Recap

We began June with a 3 game lead over C.C. We begin July with a 2 game advantage which tells me it's going to be a dogfight for the Martinique title. The Sting Rays have fallen under .500 and are 5 games back. Le Morne Rouge is buried in the cellar at 11 games back.

Matthew Michel picks up the rookie of the month award for June. In a somewhat unusual situation, his playing time was so short last fall that he won the same award last August. He's going to be a big star for our franchise.

I am pitching better than I am hitting. The Skip has actually played me at 5 positions this season. Primarily OF and SP, but, I'm gaining some experience at the infield corners, when needed.

July Recap

Nothing ever comes easy in pro ball. To the casual fan, they look at the standings and the stats and make quick conclusions on who is the best, who is hot, who will win, etc. When you are one of those guys on the field toiling for every strikeout, hit, and W, you understand how difficult it is to post those accomplishments.

The middle of July we flipped a switch. It all came together, and for two short weeks, it did seem easy. We rolled from city to city taking series while adding to our division lead.

Rosters have expanded and our magic number is 19. It would take an epic collapse to not win the division. At the same time, we have to make the team better for the post-season. The series fly by and if you are not prepared, you can be out in just a handful of days.

Player of the month for July

M2 gets a much deserved recognition for July. What a team mate.

My season

Skip has me out of the starting rotation. I'm in long relief. Whatever I can do to help the team.

My visit to Le Marin

We had a day game last Friday that we lost 5-4 to Le Morne Rouge. A few us, including Herve, drove east to Le Marin to join some of our AAA friends for dinner. We ate a real nice place on the beach called, Zanzibar. One of the upsides to playing in Le Marin are the restaurants and the beaches.

Herve to the DL

3B Herve DeLage suffered a strained shoulder when he tried to make an awkward throw on a bunt attempt. Too bad for the team, Herve was heating up with the bat. His glove is legendary around Le Diamant, so it's a double whammy right now.
Esteban Jimenez, one of the Waveriders we had a meal with last week, has been called up from Le Marin to fill in.

End of the Regular Season

We will be taking on Marseille Solis in the first round. They have made the playoffs every year and were Champions in 1962.

Soleis vs Diamonds

We won 10 of 15 during the regular season against Marseille. But, this is the post-season. We'll have to do it without Herve DeLage in the line-up.

The Post Season - At a Glance

The Expedition posted the best regular season record in the FBL at 84-54. Yet, it took them 7 games to best the Marseille Soleis, winner of the Le Diamant series in 5 games. The Soleis came up with 2 in the top of the 9th in game six to stave off elimination, but, it wasn't enough to overcome the shutout pitching of Jordane Dupuis. The Expedition closed the series out with a 2-0 win at home in front of 28,250 fans.

Yeah, we can blame it on the manager. No pitching or line up starts for Julien...just pinch hitting appearances.

The team is young so they should have other opportunities. We'll see!
