Well after a terrible season last year, the third of the 2003-04 has been better then expected. Montreal currently lead the Atlantic Division by 5 points and with the top 2 teams in each division making the playoffs, Montreal is ahead of New Jersey by 8 points. Montreal is ranked 10th for scoring in the NHL with 2.56 goals per game which is middle of the pack. Montreal does lead the NHL is goals against with just 1.64 per game and with shots allowed at 23. An area the Canadiens could improve on would by the PP which is working at just a 10.3% efficiency or 17th out of 22 teams.

Rookie C Patrick Atkins is leading the way with 10 goals and 20 points in 25 games. He had 82 points in his final year of junior last year, so the expectations were high, but maybe it can be said he has been a pleasant surprise already in his 1st year of the NHL. Both C Dean Casey and RW Joey Mariani have been table setters this season, both have 13 assists and Casey is seeing more ice time on the PP and has replaced Atkins as the 1st line Center. Montreal will demote LW Joey Mandoli to the AHL Condors. The Canadiens will promote RW Zach Broderick, the 20 year old has 7 goals and 19 points with 12 PIMS and a +3 rating in 25 AHL games.

The defense took awhile to get involved with the offense side of the game, but all 7 current Montreal defenseman have a goal. "C" Steve Thornton Is on pace to match his 12 goals in 2001-02 with Montreal, The 32 year old will also be looking for a new contract at the end of this season. Montreal grabbed 24 year old Rene Pichler off waivers last year to add some depth to the defense. Montreal feels they can send him back to the AHL and bring back 28 year old veteran Etienne Daneau from the AHL. Daneau has 0 goals and 6 points with 14 PIMs and a -1 rating in 25 AHL games. Daneau does have 100 NHL games under his belt with 3 career goals and 17 points.
